I was going to comment that they're probably talking about composition as in the art term, not composition as in what the rocks are made out of... but I looked up the tweet and saw that that particular dev is collaborating with NASA, so they're definitely talking about actual science-style rock composition.

They did rock-composition in MEA, you got that info from scanning stuff, so not that surprising some of the designer had to find that info at one point. The weird part though is that Anthem isn't supposed to be "hard scifi", so I'm not sure why they would bother with that here.

Well, yes, of course. I mean, as someone who also arts for a living, and literally spent my day sculpting rocks in zbrush for a landscape composition. BELIEVE ME, I know, ha! I was just referring to the fact that the original tweet by Jennifer Scheurle clearly was referring to the science meaning of composition, because if you look at the original tweet, she follows it up by asking for a geologist she can ask questions about moon rocks. Because she's working on a VR game with NASA. (The tweet found its way to this thread because of the response by Rachel, who is a BioWare dev, and was making a joke about how many freakin' rocks you gotta make for game environments.) And now I feel like I'm just sitting here explaining a joke to people who already got it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't miscommunicating. Apologies. I'ma go now.

Going by the previous poster, it wasn't a BioWare dev that was trying to find how rocks are made though. So all his fine. *a direct quote of Flynn about Anthem. He also made a direct comparison with ME saying that was hard core scifi and Anthem wasn't.

The fact that they're not concerned with trying to explain either technology or phenomenons based on our science (or rather - our world and our understanding of the world) doesn't mean that the world has no rules or that some rules form our world can't apply. Again - even fantasy worlds have them.

There are other reasons besides hard science that make using nature as a reference a good idea. If your Art Director says, "Your rocks look fake. Make them look more realistic," you're going to refer to nature. And if someone you trust tells you that understanding composition and formation and erosion is what's necessary to make a rock look realistic, that's what you're going to do. Look at any outdoor environment from any AAA open world game and count how many different kinds of rocks you see. HZD alone would fill a geological catalog.
It's the Art Director behind that, "it ALWAYS comes back to rocks."

Hm... authentic looking rocks is it?
That's a hint of a possible Shaper Storm portal mission to a surface / cave areas or structures with heavy rock density.... ergo "make 'em look right". It might also suggest other areas like sand, beaches, forests... etc. After all, these portal have to bring us somewhere to fight / explore and a variety of mission locations adds interest.

Sounds like it's real rockers at the studio. Some feld sparring should do the trick to clean that task from their slate.

The game awards are coming up very soon (Dec 7 ?).
Will the EA stench still linger when the international jury will select the most anticipated games for 2018? Will Anthem fail to make the list?
Bet Bio is scrambling to re-write their MT mechanics. Let DICE have the spotlight, while the studio is making the necessary changes to avoid another potential PR / game disaster. One thing in Bio's favour is that cosmetics changes to the suits are quite possible. Whereas, DICE had their hands tied to maintain the look of the Star Wars IP.

Yep, that's a bit sad to see. That said, Horizon made the "Most Anticipated" list last year... Part of me wonders if Anthem has been delayed again, pushing it into 2019. I think there's a good chance we'll see a new trailer during the awards, and find out then if they did.

Yeah, sadly it looks like Anthem didn't make the "Most Anticipated" nominee list for the Game Awards... thegameawards.com/awards/ I heard there's a bit of controversy (jealousy?) over PUBG having a GOTY nomination, while still being in Early Release. Mostly from Ass:Origin fans, I guess. Very tough competition for the Indie and debut games. Great year for indies.

I did hear a little about the PUBG controversy, and although I haven't really looked that closely at it, I think they should be careful about precedents they might set here. And yeah, another great year for Indies. A bit disappointed Little Nightmares didn't get a nomination though.
