Except that Destiny is an FPS at core. Would they really try to compete in that arena? COD, Overwatch, Battlefield, so crowded! While I'm a bit alarmed by the MP hype and the "RPG that ain't an RPG" description, I'm intrigued by the possibility that they've figured out a way to impose a strong narrative, or at least, interesting characters, onto an MP sandbox framework. No one has ever done that before, although I think CDPR was heading that way with Cyberpunk 2077, right? And it would make sense that they'd try to stake a claim in the future territory of one of their biggest competitors. And cyberpunk was on the short list for genres in our speculation. By Destiny, I meant maybe in the vein of having a small team working together in an MMO or semi-sorta MMO world with a storyline. But say there's a stronger storyline/NPCs (as you said) and more act/adv game mechanics. Ofc, the first thing I think of is Tomb Raider so now I'm just imagining team environment puzzles involving cracker-jack timing and coordination... But was that what CDPR was going for with CP2077 for their MP? I've only heard there was a MP along with the SP, but I hadn't heard any details. Interesting... The only detail - that I've seen - about CP2077s MP is that it will be "seamless" with SP. So I'm guessing there is an area or areas that you can just wander in to where there may be other players characters as well. I think Age of Conan did that, didn't they? Or similar...SP during the day, MP at night? I dunno - never played it myself, just something I remember reading about it.

Perhaps it's as much as an RPG as Mass Effect 2, but they say it's not so that people don't complain? Damn. Well, here's what I expect in one of their games: - Character creation, with faces and build possibilities; - Interaction with NPCs and something of a Party. - A good setting and story. Hope it still have these three elements.

To be clear I don't know either way, but from observing the AAA action/adventure space, how many let you customise your character and have a party that follows you? Bioware with DA + ME and .................? Good story and setting, well - I guess that will depend on your preference. I've liked or loved every single Bioware story I've played, so it looks like I'm in with a chance on that score, at least

“It’s an action-adventure, not RPG,” Wilson added during the Q&A portion of the call. That’s a change of pace for BioWare, which is best known for its role-playing game franchises. Studio fans can still expect to see “the great RPG character development and story progression that BioWare is known for,” Wilson continued. WTF does that mean? It ain't an RPG, but it's got all the good stuff we put in an RPG? So, basically, just like DAI? The Witcher?

I'd prefer it if it was an RPG but action-adventure can be alright, depending on how it's presented. The thing that has me, and a apparently a lot of others, worried is the whole:
"The game will have an online component of some kind, encouraging players to interact in a completely new setting."
"Our ambition is simple: Draw upon 20+ years of development knowledge and lessons to create something fun and new for you to enjoy with your friends."
Of the the little we know, there seems to be a big emphasis on MP-like qualities. I have no interest in playing with strangers and I only have one friend that plays games (and she's on Xbox one while I'm PC only) so any game where MP is required is an automatic skip for me.
I hope the MP-part isn't as extensive as I fear and it's perfectly playable as a SP game. Time will tell. I'll reserve final judgement until we know more, I mean we don't even have a title yet so there's no way of knowing what the MP-aspect will turn out to be.

After some thought doesn't it seem that the description they gave about the secret IP, as general as it was, was something that the cancelled Shadow Realms was supposed to be?

A bit, although it sounds to me like there's more focus on story than Shadow Realms had. SR was kinda like Overwatch or that game whose name I'm blanking on that pitted four players against one with a big monster, the story was literally a backdrop for the gameplay and the two barely touched. Given the effort they talk about doing with crafting the world and the references to character development and story progression, this seems different.

Until they say the protagonist is player-created, we have no way of knowing. If they would just reveal only one thing, how the protagonist(s) are handled would be what I want to know. TBH, an Overwatch like game by BioWare with an actual story and cool art would be pretty nice.

Before Shadow Realms was announced as cancelled, there was a rumor it was being rebooted (i.e. the gameplay changed). Interesting fact, Evolve (the game you didn't remember the name off) released the same month/year Shadow Realms cancellation was made official (Feb 2015) and it failed hard.

I wish the "not an RPG" news had been dropped either way earlier (we've known about this for several years) or at the same time as a trailer so we'd at least understand what they mean. Their new marketing strategy of dragging people along with vague tweets and finding things out through 3rd parties is less than ideal.

I'm not too worried because the definition of an rpg has never been determined. It sounds like something different though so I don't have an issued with that we have ME and Da franchises that sort of take care of the other genre. I have played a lot of BioWares mp and will probalby play a lot of MEA mp so the mp aspect is not a minus for me.

The doesn't confirm anything, but character creation has been a consistent Bioware staple up to this point. So I suspect we'll end up with a character closer to Shepard than Geralt.

I agree, and I do not play games where you do not create your own character. However, Jade Empire was an obvious compromise between giving some choice, but no actual cc, and both the ME:A and DA2 do aggressively limit the customization. They also went from nicknames and handles to actual last names, and in the ME:A -first names of the characters being fixed. It is possible that we see something like JE or MP, drop into a role rather than create your own character to play a role, and even something like the Nameless One or Geralt.

I think Jade Empire was just limited by technology, like KOTOR before it they just used presets instead of a cc. I vastly prefer cc too, so we'll just have to wait and see.

The name for your sibling is set in stone in MEA, and since you play as one of the siblings, the name is more set than in DA2, where you did not take on Bethany or Carver's role. Here your Sibling is more like a Handmaiden/Disciple, only you play as the switcheroo Joinable depending on the gender you pick.

After all, there are practical reasons to want to distinguish ourselves visually from other players right? Heck, Destiny did it.

That actually makes me feel a bit better! I still hope that any MP aspects are in the sort of Borderlands or Dark Souls area where the level of interaction is optional. I will do my best to keep an open mind, though.

Has there been a good non-RPG game that we could customize our character?
I don't think I'd be too happy if their new IP has a set character like Geralt or Nathan Drake.

Has there been a good non-RPG game that we could customize our character? I don't think I'd be too happy if their new IP has a set character like Geralt or Nathan Drake. Well, they did talk about blending genres in a new way, so maybe this will be the first?

It's so hard to speculate without knowing their definition of RPG. I can't imagine a BioWare game without dialogue options though. And if we had character creation that would be great. I've always thought a BioWare co-op game where each player gets to choose dialogue options would be fun (sort of like SWTOR in a way).

I've been trying to go spoiler-free on Andromeda, so I didn't get much information about cc, gameplay, etc. What do you mean by limited customization?
