I agree, and I do not play games where you do not create your own character. However, Jade Empire was an obvious compromise between giving some choice, but no actual cc, and both the ME:A and DA2 do aggressively limit the customization. They also went from nicknames and handles to actual last names, and in the ME:A -first names of the characters being fixed. It is possible that we see something like JE or MP, drop into a role rather than create your own character to play a role, and even something like the Nameless One or Geralt. I've been trying to go spoiler-free on Andromeda, so I didn't get much information about cc, gameplay, etc. What do you mean by limited customization? Sorry, I did not realize it was spoilers. I referred to Sara and Scott's first names not just being promotional material, but also by the virtue of how the PC is either one or another, not a third sibling (as in DA2), but actually either Sara or Scott inverse, so the Bio's choice of the first name (not just the last name) will actually be integrated into the game. In DA2, you went from a protagonist of 6 different backgrounds/backstories & three races, to only one species protagonist with a defined last name and a part of a defined family unit.

Except that Destiny is an FPS at core. Would they really try to compete in that arena? COD, Overwatch, Battlefield, so crowded! While I'm a bit alarmed by the MP hype and the "RPG that ain't an RPG" description, I'm intrigued by the possibility that they've figured out a way to impose a strong narrative, or at least, interesting characters, onto an MP sandbox framework. No one has ever done that before, although I think CDPR was heading that way with Cyberpunk 2077, right? And it would make sense that they'd try to stake a claim in the future territory of one of their biggest competitors. And cyberpunk was on the short list for genres in our speculation. By Destiny, I meant maybe in the vein of having a small team working together in an MMO or semi-sorta MMO world with a storyline. But say there's a stronger storyline/NPCs (as you said) and more act/adv game mechanics. Ofc, the first thing I think of is Tomb Raider so now I'm just imagining team environment puzzles involving cracker-jack timing and coordination... But was that what CDPR was going for with CP2077 for their MP? I've only heard there was a MP along with the SP, but I hadn't heard any details. Interesting... CP2077 at the moment is all rumors and speculation, of course, nothing confirmed. I recall hearing a rumor of CP2077 being not-RPG + MP somewhere, I'll have to dig it up. Is this a fair distillation of what we know about Secret IP? * Action-adventure genre * Not RPG, but "great RPG character development and storyline progression" * Innovative/disruptive new way to experience action-adventure with friends (assumed to mean online, co-op, MP) I'm not sure what existing game fits that list best. I too associate Tomb Raider/Uncharted/The Last Of Us with action-adventure, but those excel by removing character development, at least as a choice by the player. The characters develop in exactly one way, the way the writer wrote them to. Destiny-style raids with player-driven character development could be fun. Some folks read the "experience with friends" bullet as bringing back local/couch co-op, but that's retro, not innovative. Bleah, need more info! It could be anything.

Has there been a good non-RPG game that we could customize our character? Saints Row series. In fact, Saints Row has one of the best character creator experiences of any game. Standalone app, separate save files that you can share with friends, lots of hair/skin/body model options.

I thought you meant that there weren't a lot of options to change the way our character looks. And I can see why some people don't like it, but the first name integration actually sounds neat. Some folks read the "experience with friends" bullet as bringing back local/couch co-op, but that's retro, not innovative. Maybe 'innovative' means 'innovative for Bioware' and not for the entire industry?

The only detail - that I've seen - about CP2077s MP is that it will be "seamless" with SP. So I'm guessing there is an area or areas that you can just wander in to where there may be other players characters as well. I think Age of Conan did that, didn't they? Or similar...SP during the day, MP at night? I dunno - never played it myself, just something I remember reading about it. Found it. You're right, the rumor is based on grant applications filed in Polish, and "seamless MP" was one of the grants. Summary here: www.gamepressure.com/e.asp?ID=1077

Well, I'm still curious about the new IP though the MP hints put a real dent in my enthusiasm for it. The action part I don't mind at all but if the only way I can get through the game is by playing with other people, I will probably give it a pass.

I'm not sure comparing other games to what we know is going to be very helpful. First, action-adventure (which I assume applies more to the gameplay than the story) is kind of a broad genre. It includes Tomb Raider and Uncharted, but also Zelda and Darksiders. All we can tell from that is that we'll probably have real time combat and there's a good chance of dungeon puzzles... which isn't such a radical departure from the past half-decade of Bioware games if we're being honest. Second, the guy made a point of saying they were meshing genres in new ways. Which tells us nothing, except that using current games to judge what these genre descriptors for the secret IP mean might be misleading. The only thing we have that tells us much is the link they made between RPG character development and story progression with Bioware. That makes me pretty confident we'll have control over dialogue and impact the story with our choices (It's a matter of degree that's unclear...) The online factor and comments about enjoying it with friends, I really have no idea how to interpret. I'm guessing it means other players will be able to interact somehow with one another's game worlds, but I still have no idea what form that's likely to take. It does sound like there'll be cooperative elements.

Would fit into the action/adventure category + they are often first person (I think ME is all third-person, yes?) and could easily incorporate RPG "elements" and story/character progression. Yes/No/Maybe?

I don't think it'll be a first person game though, Bioware has never made a first person game and all action-adventure games I can think of are third person.

I'm not sure comparing other games to what we know is going to be very helpful. I know, I'm grasping at straws here. Which is why finding an example for comparison might help, to narrow the field a bit. True, but again, as you said, the genre is so large, if we can narrow it down to a single quadrant, that would help alot, even if I'm miles away within the quadrant. Example: Uncharted is about as far from Zelda as you can get. There's a cluster of games around Uncharted and a cluster of games around Zelda, and knowing which of the two clusters Secret IP is nearest to can help clarify what the heck it is. Plus, games stealing from multiple genres isn't new. ME is one such hybrid. You're probably right, but I hope you're wrong. I argued elsewhere that Bioware's strength in storytelling is hampered by concessions to player choice. I think they could give MGS and The Last Of Us a run for the money on a level playing field.

A cool, little gift was sent to MEA's QA dept. In the picture there though, who is that on the far right side...? I don't recognize it. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but does anyone recognize where it's from?

Looks like the female turian from the new ME, maybe? There's something strange around the head area that doesn't look Turian to me. And no glowing visor either (and different armor than we've seen). But the armor style does come across as ME-ish. It could very well be MEA, but because each of the other images are from different franchises (allowing for the separation of the ME trilogy & MEA) it made me wonder...

In the picture there though, who is that on the far right side...? I don't recognize it. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but does anyone recognize where it's from? Possible hint...Meta Four @metascent So cool. In the picture there, I recognize all the franchises but the one on the far right. Where's that from? Aurélien André @bl0fno idea Hmm...

Has it been confirmed that the lady on the right is actually Ryder? Perhaps the far right character is a new species from Andromeda. And would they have 2 characters from Mass Effect? It seems to me they're trying to represent all of their current franchises with a single character.

Though I would agree with Hrungr that it would be odd for them to represent Mass Effect with three characters while the others get one.

Been reading some articles speculating that this is EA's answer to The Division and Destiny.
And I can see where they're coming from, but I kinda doubt it will be so similar to either of those games even if they are responding to their success. (And I'm betting they've noticed that lack of decent story was a major criticism of both those games)
I mean, consider SWTOR. Bioware integrated their trademark focus on single player story and companion characters into a genre that wasn't known for either of those things and it did quite well. It wasn't a Wow killer, but I don't think you can hold that against them.
So I suspect this new IP will be more similar to Bioware's past efforts than some think, but there will perhaps be some sort of social space to cohabit with other players and cooperative content.
