If Bioware's ping pong reaction to criticism still holds true then perhaps they made Ryder into such a disrespected douche because people complained about the instant admiration the inquisitor got. Which was equally annoying.
Then again both protagonists have more in common than being different. So nevermind, I guess...
That said I do like professional Scott Ryder a lot more than I thought I would. Doesn't come off as a complete moron like funny Scott. But he is a boy scout. As if they wrote him for little girls to go "look how cuuute he is" all the time. Really, you can't take that character or most of the crew seriously. But hey, that's OK. Ryder is like the pyjak. Something adorable on the ship. And I can put him into badass N7 armor and make him a vanguard and pretend he's actually badass himself and not just barely old enough to buy himself a drink. Mine literally looks 15 sometimes. But I thought what the hell might as well go all out on the spring break theme.
I'm actually having fun with this game now for the brainless fluff that it is. It's still a joke as a Mass Effect game, of course. But once you surrender to it it's not half bad.

Ok - Ryder is supposed to be young and inexperienced. But I found it very difficult to relate to him. Shepard was a hard-ass. Tough and uncompromising. In numerous play-throughs of ME1-3, I played his full spectrum - from honorable, competent, professional - to ruthless psychopath. One had the choice. If you didn't want to - then Shepard didn't take shit from anyone. Ryder - on the other hand - is a pansy. No matter what is done to him - or said to him - he mostly goes: "Aw shucks - that wasn't very nice...." In most conversations, I was only given two choices - and the vast majority of them were very tame. Having just finished Andromeda, I have not been able to care about him. With Shepard, I was deeply invested in his/her fate - and after every game, I was eager for more. Frankly, I couldn't care less, if I never see Ryder again - unless he is toughened up for MEA2. I'd be interested to see if anyone else feels the same? There's definitely a major difference in the speech options for Ryder vs Shepard. My feeling on it is that I didn't want another Shepard this time around. Ryder is fine for me, I just wish I hadn't gone with the face I picked. I mean, seriously, he looks like a dork. And when he speaks, he sounds even more dorky. It was just after midnight on launch night when I started playing and I was probably half asleep when I picked his features. Bioware probably thought that since this was a much younger main character, his speech options should reflect that. He's learning on the fly based on what happened to his Dad. Makes sense to me, but I can see where others might not like the passive options. Oh, by the way OP, great topic!!! Nice to see something that's not about people screaming about animation issues. Good job!

I'd be interested to see if anyone else feels the same? I have been thinking the same thing but I haven't really paid much attention to it ... I mean ME 1 - 3 had renegade and paragon options as you could be good or evil. If the game devs implemented a larger divide between "good" and "bad" ryder to put it plainly then I think it would give ME A more character and depth.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else feels the same? Indeed, also Shepard (note: I couldn't care less for the actual character, as for me Shepard is only an Avatar!) had more interrupts and options in general (I bet Shepard would have torn that pregnant woman who decided to steal equipment and medicine (in order to get pregnant in the first place because she needed to get rid of the anti-pregnancy meds the A.I. had anybody subjected to) a new one for endangering the A.I (they were trying to put people back into stasis for fucks sake because they were already rationing food and she goes and steals medicine, food, equipment and even a working shuttle and on top of that she adds another mouth to feed (so she probably stole enough food for at least 3 people for a few months!)...that's reckless endangerment of a child IMHO and in RL CPS would swoop in (if somebody informs them!) and take the child from her and IMHO that's what should happen in the game: Child gets taken and she and her boyfriend/husband or whatever get either locked up or put to work without pay (they get food, clothing and medical checks, but nothing else...and if they try to run? Bullet between the eyes!))....same for Sloan Kelly and that other guy (damned, forgot the name)...he/she would have cleaned house on Kadara!) Hell, I bet Shepard would have upgraded his/her ship, too (when you are constantly threatened by hostiles an unarmed ship is not going to cut it!) - and the the Nomad would have had a turred added soon as well (hell, Shep would probably do that himself/herself if all the other people can't be bothered!) Yeah, over all I totally agree that Ryder was/is a damned pansy who needs to grow some balls (goes for both Scot and Sara...also: Get rid of the damned personalities Scot's sassyness often pisses me off, damned be professional you damned little punk and Sara is not much better! Let me be sassy if I want to, but don't force that on me!) greetings LAX ps: GET RID OF AUTO-DIALOGUE! (I'd rather have a silent protagonist than a fucking chatterbox always saying stupid shit!) pps: Remake ME:A and let us travel on the freaking NEXUS (the first few hours in the game we'll fix the problems on the Nexus - better than Tann (who really pisses me off, I mean yeah he tries his best, but he's just a fucking condescending bean-counter ) - and later on we'll make sure the first outpost survives etc...no outcasts because we were able to calm people down (or because we simply forced them back into stasis! I really don't get why people didn't want to go back into stasis...I'd be the first at my fucking pod if it's that or starving to fucking death (as long as they make sure people are woken up if power runs out, as I don't want to fucking die in stasis!))

It'd just end up getting overrun with vorcha, krogan and some batarians the moment we left, and this is assuming Shepard is capable of fighting Aria and the entire gang.
