My answer to the OP is yes, I found Ryder to be extremely bland as a protagonist but Ryder, as a character, could be just another victim of MEA's writing and story, that I found both to be really bland and all over the place. Sub-par for a AAA+ game that was meant to be a successor of MET.

His idiocy and weakness should have defeated him first, but we don't get to see the penalty for being so weak. if you don't do it the Cortez way, you fail and your colony dies. Wait, are we talking about Ryder's weakness against the Kett or something? Killed a fuck-ton of those guys so I'm not sure what that's about, but how would a "Cortes way" game really play out? What would the factions be? What would be our role, and what would our options be in terms of how we want to resolve the game's central conflict? Cortes is cool and all, but fuck that guy. He wasn't no dang spaceman. his softness, he trust what should be the highly militarized natives of a completely foreign environment with no reason to do so at all, and no power to 'walk softly and carry a big gun', he is the very thin point of a none-existent spear, and as such should have been ignored at best, betrayed and killed at most likely outcome. Space Cortez is easy, the factions are as they are, and thenm the heavily armed and militarily competent settlers (notice the renegades and the Krogan do well? yea it's because they deal in realpolitik not kumbaya) crush their erstwhile allies to prevent them becoming a threat and claim their well developed golden worlds, ones that don't need Remnant woo to be habitable, they then prepare for the rest of the arks and start cranking out the war ships, if war with the kett is necessary then Thanix cannon and m920 cain's are the answer. The kett are not that advanced from all we see, a competent force of cruisers or carriers would crush them, a Dreadnought would laugh at them as it burned their worlds. Any other approach is placing your neck on a block and waiting for the axe and should be punished as such, if you make the theme of your game 'colonialism' do not pretend that it is anything but armed robbery and murder on a continental scale, to do other wise is the same as making a 'rail simulator' based on sending people to the death camps, gross apologia and morally indefensible at best |

The OP is probably my major gripe with the game. That and the absence of really memorable companions.
But the way how they have written the Ryder character probably takes the cake. It already becomes glaringly obvious when first meeting the directors on the Nexus. Regardless of the dialogue option you choose, Addison always has the last (and virtually same) word in the most disrespectable way possible. Add to this the shoehorned meeting on the Tempest, where even the crew doesn't show any respect. I'm good with Peebee or Drack not doing it, but it's quite a different tune for the likes of Liam or Cora.
No, Ryder's presented a douche from start to finish. They can't even do something against it, since when disrespect is shown, things mostly switch to autopilot where you can't react, only watch, how your Ryder even makes more of a fool of themselves.
I'm going out on a limb here, but that's probably not something, many players can identify with. They want larger than life. A character that takes them out of their daily lives where they have to deal with unpleasant bosses and bills to pay. Rubbing into their faces that they're still not at the helm of a larger than life figure seems like a stupid decision. One where I ask myself who was coming up with something like that.
