What's wrong with thawed? Also, it's kind of the opposite of pedantic. Way too informal.

It wasn't - but Origins was still a good game. High metacritic for users and reviewers. Unlike Andromeda. I like Origins, but I find metacritic very unreliable. It is now. But back when Origins came out it wasn't so overtaken with the ridiculous 10's and 0's. At the time it was pretty respected and was used by publishers and dvelopers to measure success. Now it's a joke.

I see what you're saying but I believe the logic is flawed. If MEA had been spectacular and blown any of the other 3 out of the water, we wouldn't even be talking about ME1 or 2 or 3 AT ALL. If MEA was so good that it made us almost forget that the other tree existed the conversations we would be having would be completely different. THe fact that we are comparing it to ME1 and in many cases discussing it's failing in comparison says a lot about MEA's shortcomings. Possibly. At that same token though, it's kind of inevitable to have this conversation. Like, the recent release of Breath of the Wild has been called the best Zelda game ever made by a lot of people, while others say it is still not as good as Ocarina of Time, or the original Zelda, or Wind Waker, or whatever favorite they had. It is fandom at it's best sometimes, the sort of discussions you can have with folks on something you all enjoy. If it wasn't about Zelda, it would be a Fallout game. Or The Witcher series, or some other beloved franchise that will see it eventually compared to the past. Whether it is compared favorably or not is always going to be subjective ultimately., especially to it's previous installments and the legacy they create. That baggage will be there, so to speak, I think even if Andromeda was a great game. I would bet there would be people still comparing it unfavorably to Mass Effect 1 in some form as well if it had universal acclaim. It is sort of what we do when we have benchmarks to hold it up to. Sure there would, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as dominant. I think anyway, no way to prove it.

Mass Effect 1 was great. Its a terrific narrative where you never lose the thesis from the end of the first mission to the completion of the game. When I played it I stayed up hours passed when I would normally go to bed, skipped the gym a couple times so I could get an extra 2-3 hours of play in, played it daily until I beat it and wanted to spend as much time as I could learning about this new world. I've watched tons of videos on different decisions, watched 2 different LPs of it, and have played it myself 2-3 times.
I didn't get a single one of those sensations from MEA. I was so frustrated with MEA I just plain quit and it actually motivated me to go hit my Steam backlog. It made me so disappointed that I bought Stellaris because I craved a space game.
ME1 deserves all the praise it gets.

We're glossing over 1 important fact. ME1 was new and exciting no one knew what to expect. It was all fresh. MEA was full of expectations. Everyone remembers losing their virginity. No matter how bad it was, it was new and exciting. No matter how good your 4th time having sex was, you don't really remember it. It was just another time and it carried way more expectations than your 1st time.

Sure this is the 4th instalment but the fact is MEA should never have been released when it was clear it had so many bugs and glitches, that is why it is in this predicament. That's not even getting into all the other mistakes made in the game, it is not the fans fault for having reasonable expectations, it comes down to EA/Bioware delivering a sub par product.

I think Mass Effect 1 is better because there is no busy work. There was no spending hours mining planets of gathering materials.

I think Mass Effect 1 is better because there is no busy work. There was no spending hours mining planets of gathering materials. I think people are greatly overestimating how often you really need to plant mining probes to get resources in this game. I used it a couple of times in my first playthrough, but stopped for 2 reasons: SAM kept chiming in whenever I opened the interface, and I didn't like zigzagging around in the Nomad just to get as strong a reading as I can. Thankfully, crates, AVP, strike team farming and just straight up buying it with the easily earned credits made up the difference. ME2 will always be the worst when it came to resource gathering, because there was no fast-track method to getting it. You had to circle around those stupid planets. Anyway, ME1 had tons of busywork. I don't know how anyone could believe otherwise.

I don't know how anyone could believe otherwise. You could get the best gear and weapons(Spectre gear X) in the game by simply playing the main story three times. In order to do that with games like Mass Effect 2, or Dragon Age Inquisition, you have to do some mmo grinding.

I changed Shepard's initial resources at the beginning of the game so that planet scanning is never necessary. I changed the Normandy fuel usage to zero. Then later I eventually enabled all upgrades to transfer over to NG+ too. So other than ship and squadmate upgrades, resources and money are hardly even needed.

All that time wasted getting out of the Mako for the XP bonus. I was basically picking up experience scraps across the universe in hopes of reaching that golden number, and the difference was pretty negligible in the end…and then I started up again and did everything again. I think that was to my detriment, as it made me kind of sour to the game a little.

I definitely miss being able to throw a Geth Colossus into low orbit as my adept in ME 1.
[old man voice] Back in my day you had to start with crap powers before you could work your way up to Biotic God level. Now a days all these kids are zipping around the map charging left and right like a rabbit with ADHD who just overdosed on pop rocks and cherry cola. [\old man voice]

It literally made no difference and I think I hit it on Feros (where if you playing a good guy, you didn't dare unleash your full biotics for fear of killing Quark's friends).

ME1 had some gameplay issues for that I didn't enjoy as much as later games in the series but I still played the hell out of it because I loved the characters and I loved the story. The pacing and tone were almost perfect for me. It's not my favorite in the trilogy but it's still a great game. It may not have the pretty graphics MEA does, but I will play it again. I still haven't been able to finish MEA.

I realy don't get why Mass Effect 1 is praised like it's the holy grail or something. Yes, the story is damn good and it set the foundation for imo the 2nd best Sci-Fi universe that exists (sorry, not topping W40k). But that's it. The gameplay is atrocious, controls are sluggish as f*ck, the graphics can get pretty ugly for a 2007 game at some points, the sound quality isn't that great either... The dialoge system sometimes has 3 options but Shepard will say the same line, no matter what you pick - nice way of making it look like there are a lot of options. And who thought putting a bouncy ball in a game, calling it a tank and making the player bounce arround the most boring and repetitive planets possible was a good idea? Oh and biotics, because we want to make the game a ragdollfest! And elevators. I first played it in 2011 and stopped after about 5h because it just wasn't fun and I didn't play it again until 2014 when I finally decided to play the trilogy. Stangely enough I played it like a dozen times. But only because I wanted to play the entire trilogy, so I just rushed through ME1 on easy. I play the others on insanity, btw. Apard from the story, the game dosen't realy have that much going for it, even some characters are kinda boring until ME2. The story does compensate for a lot of that, but the fact that I put the game down and ignored it for 3 years says a lot (I usually don't put a game down that easy). And one thing to keep in mind, you may not like ME1 much, but many people did and it's the reason we had the awesome trilogy. So, don't play it, your choice but you owe it a thank you. We all do.
