I realy don't get why Mass Effect 1 is praised like it's the holy grail or something. Yes, the story is damn good and it set the foundation for imo the 2nd best Sci-Fi universe that exists (sorry, not topping W40k).
But that's it. The gameplay is atrocious, controls are sluggish as f*ck, the graphics can get pretty ugly for a 2007 game at some points, the sound quality isn't that great either... The dialoge system sometimes has 3 options but Shepard will say the same line, no matter what you pick - nice way of making it look like there are a lot of options. And who thought putting a bouncy ball in a game, calling it a tank and making the player bounce arround the most boring and repetitive planets possible was a good idea? Oh and biotics, because we want to make the game a ragdollfest! And elevators.
I first played it in 2011 and stopped after about 5h because it just wasn't fun and I didn't play it again until 2014 when I finally decided to play the trilogy. Stangely enough I played it like a dozen times. But only because I wanted to play the entire trilogy, so I just rushed through ME1 on easy. I play the others on insanity, btw.
Apard from the story, the game dosen't realy have that much going for it, even some characters are kinda boring until ME2. The story does compensate for a lot of that, but the fact that I put the game down and ignored it for 3 years says a lot (I usually don't put a game down that easy).

Nope. ME 1 is far better than MEA in nearly every way. The only thing from MEA I wish I had in ME1 was the charge/melee opeions. The best thing MEA did was make me want to ME 1 again, which I am. And loving every moment of it far more than the drudgery of MEA.

Different things are important to different people. ME1 is my favorite game in the series and I can't understand for the life of me why some people love ME2 so much. Obviously these people look for different things in a game than I do. To each his/her own.

People need to stop denying ME1....Yeah Take That!!!!.😆
Next your gonna tell me you loved MEA and it has no flaws.....
Love these jokes.😂
Played ME1 like 20 times before ME2 never alone the amount of times after. Because each replay i went ME1 then 2 then 3 over the years.
MEA struggled to do two plays so far..... only to see what changed based on choices... zip.😧

It's the best Mass Effect game, of course it gets praise. Yes, the companions are walking codex entries, and the combat is a mess, but the rest of the game is fantastic. Even the combat I feel has a certain charm below all its clunkiness.

Probably depends on in what order and when ME1 was played. It was my first Bioware game and the biggest videogame love affair of my adult life, and I didn't even like sci-fi...
The game looked AMAZING to me on Xbox at the time. I had never seen such realistic faces. Of course today it looks like ass and the gameplay is painful.

It's probably not a good idea to create a thread specifically to hate on one of the older games. ME1 does deserve its fair share of praise. It introduced us to the universe and its history and gave us a big scifi world to have fun in. Clumsy ass gameplay or not, that's gotta count for something.
As a big fan of Andromeda, I appreciate how it owes a lot of its general feel and atmosphere to ME1, while giving me combat I can actually enjoy thoroughly.

Also I can't judge any of the MT games alone before I play them as a trilogy. I have no idea how I would respond to any of them as a single gaming expereince. I do know I think the character writting ME1 sucks. To each their own.

ME1 is far from the best;on that I agree. I think ME3 is the best ME game from the trilogy. Despite the ending, ME3 showed all of my choices mattered. Tali and the Geth finding peace and back to living on their homeworld. Edi and Joker. The rachni saved from extinction. The Genophage cured. The Turians are going to be influenced by the greatest brother-in-arms ever... in the whole universe, even! Mass Effect 1 set the foundation and it was never meant to be perfect. Though, I can really tell Bioware, tried to meet that impossible standard.

Ehhhhhhhh well to each his own I guess, but I always thought ME1's gameplay was super rough, even after actually getting the full hang of it playing all the time. As for character reactivity, the one and only character that truly reacts to anything is Wrex. So I guess that sort of counts (though his "reaction" is a scripted standoff you cannot avoid under any circumstances), but it's still just the one character. In general though, I'm more on the side of Dragon Age when it comes to companion reactivity. Mass Effect has always been shallow as a frisbee in comparison.

No, they are boring characters with little dialouge, and bland dissinteresting personalities. You don't have to be wooden and boring to be real. The fact that they are not so in the sequels is my evidence. The last time I played ME1 (just a few months ago) I was shocked how much I didn't give a shit about Garrus, and how all of my good feelings towards him was a carryover from having player ME2-3. Like I said, for me, worst character writing in a Bioware game (great characters thought, that really shine in the sequels).
