fine hair texturing and realistic hair movement, coloring and light/shading plus avoiding the clipping with multiple outfits while the character is animated to move is a very expensive and resource intensive nightmare for game design. That's why long hair so far sucks. Check out some of the games with large mod'ing communities and you can find some really great examples of well done hair, physics enabled or not. It think its more they just don't care about doing hair well. Yeah women are making inroads into game development but it is still a male dominated field, nice hair just isn't something they care about. I have seen modded hair, and while looking good, it is not immune to clipping and from what I saw interacted badly with the doll/clothes. They do care, because it is certainly one of the promises a lot of MMOs make, good hair. It is certainly a known measure of graphics quality.
EDIT: and, BioWARE certainly improved hair between Inquisition and Andromeda, even though it is not enough. And they did get eyelashes right, thankfully. Inquisition drove me bonkers.
I get why texture might not yet be up to snuff, particularly with multiplatforming, what I do not get is why so few hairstyles for males. That was one thing that certainly surprised me.

When I played DAO there was a separate CC IIRC. It was a few years after it came out but I think it might have been part of the original game only I'm not sure. It was purchased through steam and I think I got it with the DLC. The DAO CC came out before the game, kind of a CC demo. You could then import characters you made when the game released. It was more of a promotional thing.

And as recreational as Sims is, you can't say it doesn't handle physics and rendering as well as any AAA game.

No one said the mod'ed hairs were perfect and considering the amount of clipping things like weapon and armors have I doubt that is the main concern with hairs. No one can deny that new hair models is one of the most popular type of mods you'll find out there in the bigger game mod communities so it is obviously something lots of players feel are lacking in these games. But if you like the MEA hairs, fine, great for you.

How are people struggling to create attractive characters? Created 2, one of who looks like Ash. Did not plan that and the voice mismatch throws me still. They're not truly struggling. They're just riding the ME:A/Bioware hate bandwagon. I'm happy with my male and female Ryder. Didn't have any issues at all creating a character I liked.

Yeah, DAO had an optional external CC you could download apart from the game, and upload to the BW website as an avatar or to use in your actual game. I still love my DAO character. Before they turned elves into twigs.

But if they do stuff like hair well, I hope it gets eventually integrated in other games. I sure hope that the hair conundrum will get resolved over next few years, and it will be captured and rendered far better than at present.

Seriously. Clipping isn't the issue here. All long hairs will probably clip, depending on angle, equipment, etc. Understood. But the shorter hairs looking like clay is silly. And the blond looking like piss is ridiculous. Sims 3 has been out for 7 or 8 years. I don't know how much longer it should take? www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=515576

Either not enough gypsy magic or perhaps too much.

Some of the darker ones look okay but the lighter colors look ridiculous, and I assume the neon colored ones are supposed to look ridiculous I dunno. They are all way over saturated.

If i had the template for the hairs, it would literally take me 5 minutes to make a hair texture with transparency map. Used to do that in ME2 with....oh what was that utility that let you replace textures in a game? Can't remember. Doesn't work with Frostbyte, yet though, alas.
Edit: TexMod, that's it. I should go looking to see if it works with MEA yet.

Yeah, some of the issues aren't big technical things, just attention to detail things. Would still like to see some longer and more stylish hairs but that would in fact require new models.

Just give us some medium and short hairs that don't look like piss or Ronald McDonald, please!

The CC is not great in therms of options but there is a lot of more diversity. Also I was pretty neutral when it come to Felicia Days, now I like her because of the book club.

I had this EXACT trouble. I look very much like Felicia Day. I am a very pale redhead. My eyebrows are almost red. Ended up making a complete different looking asian female, because the reasons Felicia faces here, too.

Yeah that NPC is well and truly hideous. :D8: It is a great example of everything wrong with MEA's characters. The neon hair, the neanderthal face, the slumped posture, the giant man hands, the stubby legs. It is the perfect encapsulation of everything I dislike about the game.

Unless you go Asian, expect an inbred looking mongrel. Haha! Not true at all. You can transform those homely presets into unrecognizable beauties. Check the character I linked in an earlier post. Most of the imports have weak chins and jaws, or overly prominent features. I hate to rag on the appearances of real people, but these presets don't make much sense as game protagonists. Fortunately, we can totally reshape the faces, with a little work.

yeah my first Sara I don't think was prefect Iliked her but she wasn't the best character I'd created. I admit it is harder to make a decent character in MEA than in some CC's but not impossible as my NPC Sara in my current playthrough looks much nicer, even to the point where I might make a similar Sara for my Jaal romance later. But then I don't alway saim to make all my characters look pretty.I did try a little more in my current run and I've got the kind of look I want in mind for my next run when I do it. But I'm going to hold off on that until I've done a run of the DA games ...first run through DA? My first run through DAI was OK not perfectbut my first quizzy looked nice enough but then DAI's CC is in general a little better than MEA's in terms of giving you more options to play with. This was my first quizzy I made for DAI Gina Travelyan but she dosen't have any mods and no DLC stuff as I didn't have any at that time. DAI 2 by Steven Sharp, on Flickr This was my first Sara for MEA or Lucie as I called her as I ewnt with a custom name for my first playthrough . Was thinking I might stick with Sara though for my next run custom look but keeping the name. MassEffectAndromeda 2017-03-30 10-24-12-62 by Steven Sharp, on Flickr

If the hair was textured better I bet the anime hair would look a lot better.
