Is it worse to hate a character, or feel nothing from them?
Even with characters I hate, I can at least get some sort of reaction when something happens to them. Maybe I'm just bad at ignoring bland characters presented as important.

1. Ryder. Total failure as a player character in a Bioware RPG. 2. ME3!Jack. Badly written, unrealistic behind-the-scenes character development in very short time, totally ruined my favorite character from ME2. 3. EDI. Very stereotypical AI character, with all the tedious questions about meaning of the life, etc (again was much better in ME2). Worst part is it's romantic "relationship" with Joker - at least you can stop it from happening though, so that's something... 4. Many (minor) NPC's from MEA thanks to awkward as fuck dialogue. 5. The Angara. Not all of them are horrible in fact some of them were interesting enough like the Roekaar, but overall the entire species is written pretty poorly and are just too human. I'm also annoyed by how limited our approach to dealing with them are and Ryder's forced paragon ("this is their world and we play by their rules!") attitude towards them, so that might have huge impact on my overall opinion of them. It's frustrating when "your" (haha what a joke) character is forced to care about something when you couldn't see any reason why they should do so... This list triggers me. It's a good thing we don't all have to have the same opinion  |

No Liam in the poll = Thread fail. Liam isn't even 1/1000th as bland as Jacob... Untrue. Jacob's romance is interesting to a one point. He is actually asking how Shepard is holding up and then speaks about the morals of their work. One rare moments that Shepard discusses about her killings, if I remember correctly. Shepard has frustration and wonders why she is the only one getting out of the situations alive. Sadly that conversation - like the important conversations with Jack - are cut off for the ones that are not romancing either. I played Jacob's and Liam's loyalty missions resently and I did like Jacob's more, because it is deeply disgusting. Liam's mission was for the laughs and I prefer a dramatic tone for my playtroughs :-). |

Jacob's real problem was Shepard's, because the writers mishandled FemShep's dialogue very badly. But he was the decent straight-man in the group, though he was scripted to always suggest the options with the worst outcomes (let's get the IFF now; lemme go in the vent!). In ME3 he became kind of lame, but I did like his goodbye dialogue. |

Yeah. He did come across as a character who hadn't been paid much attention to. He did shift in personality all the time in the latter half, like when he tells Tali to introduce herself to EDI. It's like "Why the hell do you say that?" and then despite being so professional with his team he gets all riled up because of Thane being an assassin... what?
In 3 he shifted writer and it feels like the lack of direction in 2 just carried over into Chris Hepler's lap.
Chris: "So, luke, what can you say about Jacob? Any pointers?"
Luke: "Ah, I wrote him as sort of a straight guy whose moral compass is in order but he has some principles and mmumblegrumblegrumble..."
Chris: "Uuuuh, I'll think of something."
