More live services is hardly shocking, I just hope when out exploring and trying to enter a cave I don't get the "become a subscriber today" to access notification...that's gonna kill the immersion. To be honest I'm just kind of over it...not just Bioware or EA, but the entire industry as a whole. Online elements are only going to become more pervasive throughout games...and no amount of ranting is going to change it.

The outcome, which is already manifesting, is that I play fewer games - all without a significant "revenue tail" - and stick to them longer.

Personally, I am just shifting more and more to indy developers, kickstarter games and old school RPGs. AAA games market is doomed, my worst fear is that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a lot of focus on online content too.

I'm very curious to see how CDPR handles that since as I recall CP 2077 is to have a multiplayer component. Hopefully they don't fall into the same trap as the rest of the industry has. As far as what is still worth playing in my mind? Bioware...despite the various missteps, and Naughty Dog games. CDPR perhaps if CP is crafted as expertly as TW3 was. Otherwise I just tend to replay the same games (KOTOR, MET, DA, Uncharted, TLOU...a few others.) I'm lucky to find a single title a year that I like enough to finish playing.

Yea this, I am increasingly getting ready to throw in the towel on triple A games anyway. I am consistently down to only 2ish games a year I give a shit about. Things are doing better in the isometric & indie RPG department, but I have to admit that those can't scratch all the itch I have. I don't *need* the full on cinematic experience of a triple A game, but it's darn sure nice when it's done well. If even those dry up, it was fun while it lasted I guess. I'll get a lot more reading done.

That Casey Hudson has balls big enough to even attempt to try and allay our concerns at this point is all kinds of amusing.

AAA games market is doomed, my worst fear is that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a lot of focus on online content too. Doomed? I don't think so. The AAA market is just shifting away from catering to the preferences of the likes of you and me, because as gaming attracts a more mainstream demographic, we're becoming a minority. It was bound to happen eventually. For most people playing games is a social activity. Even roleplaying is, away from video games, and would never have been otherwise except for the technical challenges of distributed MP. Remember, when video RPGs came into being there was no internet, even less cheap high-bandwidth connections. That problem doesn't exist anymore, and so the videogaming market reverts to normal, with SP content a small bubble in a sea of co-operative and competitive MP, just like games are away from the computer or console. Meanwhile, that which is really new in videogames, what is, in the broadests possible sense, interactive storytelling featuring a world full of connected story elements and AI-run NPCs, still faces a technical and economical challenge: in the absence of real AI combined with voice synthesis, NPCs and everything they do and say have to be handcrafted, which makes character interaction expensive to create. Thus, this kind of content is of less interest to the industry. This is regrettable, but hardly the end of the world. It may be a while before the pendulum swings in the other direction again, but playing rpgs on electronic media is a well-liked hobby, not more. I've rarely been a fan of anything to such an extent that its absence really hurt, and in those cases it was never a good thing in the first place. As long as storytelling as such doesn't go out of fashion, there'll always be something, and thee will be the occasional AAA video game that fits my preferences. In the end....*shrug*. Things change. You move on.

After SW BF II and the recent atrocious move by Konami to get more $$ out of players, I'm no longer incline to support devs / publishers implementing dubious practices in their products.
