Since Rey has been mentioned a whole bunch of times, let my nominate someone else: Honor Harrington She didn't really start out that way, but as the series progressed, she became Practically Perfect in Every Way. Couldn't stand those novels..... Ugh. Started out good. But then she: Was revealed to be genetically engineered to be super-strong and an enhanced metabolism Got promoted to Admiral of Pretty Much Everything in two different star nations Became a Duchess AND a Steadholder AND a Countess Became telepathic (or, at the very least, an empath) Became an eighth level black belt in coup de vitesse, the fictional martial art of the series. Not to mention good enough with pistols and swords to defeat professional duelists Married her mentor (AND his wife) after his first wife decided she was okay with an open marriage And is BFFs with the Queen and her family.

I feel adding Honor to the discussion is low hanging fruit. Those novels aren't supposed to be High Literature but given that Honor, a female space officer in a fictional navy, is created by a male author who I believe is also a pastor...I'm skeptical. Well, my understanding is she is SUPPOSED to be modeled after Admiral Nimitz. But I think things spiraled out of control after a few books...

Though if she was modeled after the Admiral then that might explain a lot since Nimitz was a bit of a bad ass.

Slight-OT tangent, but if Stannis fans believe he's the true King by right, then do they support Hela in Thor: Ragnarok? I would, except Odin as the current king disowned her, banished her and erased her entire existence from public record. I'm pretty sure next in line doesn't apply anymore. As for Daenerys, can a character be called a sue if they're so obviously incompetent? I mean yeah, plot armor writer's pet characters that get everything handed to them can be just as annoying but a sue is specifically supposed to be perfect in-universe as well, yes? No one who pays attention would claim Daenerys is flawless, on any level. Game of Thrones (the show at least) doesn't deal in sues. It deals in crippling flaws that are more crippling on some characters than others (read: they're outright fucking ignored on some characters, mostly on the villain side, allowing them successes after successes when they should be dead in the ditch several times over.)

Is "still alive despite numerous mistakes when other major characters are mercilessly killed off for one mistake" a form of Sue-dom? Or do you just consider that plot armor?

I would consider that plot armor. Sueness is an eternally debatable topic, but for me there must be an element of flawlessness expressed in-universe and out, and for Daenerys, while certain besotted characters would certainly make that claim, it's blatantly obvious to the audience that this is not so.

Sues like Harrington seem to spawn from the writer's warped fantasy of his ideal woman.

I don't bother with whether she is or not because this issue never crossed my mind. I'm more interested in the other parties in the Honorverse, in the world story development. As it is, I hold the view that she wins most battles, excels in ship command / tactics because she is over 60 years old even though she looks like a young woman; prolong. That is at least 40 years of experience accrued and honors / accolades earned. As for the rest, I'm not bothered with she married so and so or she became citizen of planet A, B and C, got close with the crown, etc, etc. Too much goodies going her way? I would be bothered if they fell to her the minute she exited the academy, without reason. She's meant to die in TBoM, defending Manticore, but the author was forced to veer because of the spin-offs. But she will die, that is confirmed. Her death in whatever battle, the thousands of lives that will go in the coming conflicts will result in changes and revelations in the Honorverse. I'm keen to know the plans that were set in place hundreds of years ago.
