A thread of posts has just been posted by Anthem's Community Manager, Jesse Anderson, (as twitter is a pain, here's the exchange) Link to posts thread: Link to post threadJesse Anderson @darokaz
"I think it’s time that I talked about some things that have been on my mind. This is going to be a long thread of replies, so buckle up
To kick things off, I want to talk about why there hasn’t been as much communication on Anthem from me these past few weeks. I have been wanting to talk about so many things because I don’t like going quiet, but there were reasons for this.
Sometimes when there are bigger discussions going on internally, I have to put communication on hold to avoid saying inaccurate things. A lot of this is explained in that reddit post I shared from the team. If I ever have to go quiet again, I will let the community know.
Moving forward, I should be able to talk more though. It might not always be about future content for Anthem, but I can talk about what just released, what’s about to release and issues the team is aware of and are fixing/investigating.
Anthem Streams – The last stream was rough for me, I won’t hide from that. I wasn’t able to answer questions people wanted the answers to, and it was very difficult to pull questions from the chat that were about what we were showing.
The plan was to have the stream go out the week before, so that we could share the new stronghold and the patch notes, but that freaking cable that was cut made my life hell. New info would have been shared as originally planned…
And when the chest was opened up on stream I did almost say “purple rain” but didn’t because I wasn’t sure how people would react and I froze, I was at a loss for words....
Normal me would just laugh and joke about it, but things are sensitive right now, so I didn’t… I want to get back to a point where we can have fun together as a community on streams.
I’m going to do everything in my power to avoid situations like that again because it’s not a great experience for players either. If we’re going to do a stream on story, combat, level design or something else, we’ll state that ahead of time so you can know what to expect.
I have seen people saying that we don’t look at other streams and questioning why we don’t just do what they do. We do look at streams from other studios; it would be silly not to. We’ll be evolving our streams as we go and are listening to the community feedback for them.
One thing we did was not have people talking and playing at the same time, because doing that is difficult when you aren’t speaking to exactly what you are doing in game. I also understand sometimes people just want information drops, so we’ll see what we can do there as well.
I want to say that I play other games that we're sometimes compared to. I’ve played Destiny for years, have reached world tier V in The Division 2, 55 hours in Warframe and 95 hours logged in Anthem. We can all coexist! Let’s not spread hate.
Loot, I know you want answers but right now the only thing I can share is what was said in the update post from Reddit. I will definitely be one of the first to share news when I can!"
Personally I found that to be a sincere and helpful update. What do you think?

It was a nice piece of communication from Jesse ... to the 23k followers he has on twitter. So I question whether a good number of people saw it.

A perfect example of what players want/need vs what Bio wanted to show. I believe Bio failed to read the pulse of the community. The new stronghold is of less interest than "when are you gonna fix this mess?". Imo, it should not have taken Jessie off guard.

Well, let's see... purple loot, playing a stronghold mission. Yes, I would say WTF myself. Any wonder why players don't really care about the new stronghold if they get purples? I don't blame Jessie but as a show case of Bio's latest and greatest... that was a flop.
Regardless, I hope the next time is much better all around.

To answer your question Sofa, it's a start. But, notice his caveats.
He, on behalf of Bio, acknowledges the Loot and Progression mess. ... unlike some around here. Unfortunately, I doubt it can be fixed in a "timely manner" that will satisfy the 'extremists". Still, they are "working towards a fix".
That should say something.....

It's why he said he was going to be 'brave' and look at the comments. He has a point that there may have been more comments about the stronghold if they were able to do the livestream prior to its launch. That being said they should know what the major concerns of players are, and to do a livestream while ignoring most of the players concerns just makes that livestream feel really fake and controlled. He should have addressed it in the livestream imo, instead of doing a really awkward job of ignoring it.

You are right. Jessie should have acknowledged it immediately. Unfortunately, I think he came in with a plan with no back up.

He should have addressed it in the livestream imo, instead of doing a really awkward job of ignoring it. They should have addressed it before showing the stronghold. They should have either read the statement from Bioware, put it up on the screen, or directed people to it from the start, and said this livestream is just about the stronghold, please keep your questions to that. But it comes across much, much worse if you say you're going to the chat for questions, and then say we're not going to answer these questions. WHich at the time was basically one question. Even near the end. Instead of asking are there any questions about this stronghold, the other guy, sounding annoyed says I can't believe no one is asking about the level design. I said in another thread. There is a level of contrition Bioware is just not showing. Jesse did in this post, and it will probably be well received.

Now I'm saying this with the utmost sympathy... poor bastard. Or in my native language, armes Schwein.
He has to take the flak for a product he didn't make, from people who paid an AAA price and received an MVP. Yes, that's part of the job description, but this is really an extreme case.
Paying customers have a right to express their disappointment with the product they received, but their anger should be reserved for those who caused the situation in the first place: Anthem's exceedingly poor project management. The community manager is just the messenger.

It feels like they want to improve, but as long as results stay out, they are hollow words.
Here's what it sounds like to me:
Captain over a radio to his soldiers in the trenches during a war "Yes, my fellow soldiers, we know the trenches is not a happy place to be. We're doing something to improve it, but I won't say what just yet!! Trust me, I understand your pain, I was in a trench once, it was awful with the mud, totally fritzed my pedicure!"

I found it particularly bizarre that people were posting their belief of what Jesse was 'thinking' about fans simply by the look on his face during the stream. We're entering dreams into evidence now, are we?
I would have enjoyed the 'Purple Rain' gag, but the butthurt have a sorely lacking sense of humor.

Part of me believe them and found this sincere response to all fans, but my snappish side thinks like "is this an another PR response?". I'll overcome my snappish side.
Anthem's launch and state is really interesting. Destiny released as a broken half-baked game, has some serious bugs and glitches and most of them still in the game. People didn't hate as they do to Anthem. And about Division, i think everybody know how their player base need to wait for over 6 months to play a decent game.
Anthem has an amazing gameplay, fantastic world design and deep background lore. I am sure Bioware did build tons of content to add but waiting because they show lots of things at pre-release streams. Once they fix bugs, make game more stable and performing better and solve progression system and loot this game will become superior to other looter-shooters. Developments wise, creating a fun gameplay is more challenging then creating some loot.
I understand why people upset about Anthem, but this hate is much more and mostly unnecessary. I think most of them find this as an opportunity fight EA but they are hurting good people, good developers and a good game.

Let’s not polarize, shall we? Let me add a little nuance to that throw-away line. The stream chat had been mocking BioWare and some at least readying themselves to disrupt the stream for at least 2 hours before stream showtime. As Jesse is an 'official' any salt or quip from him would have been jumped upon instantly, so the standards are not equal. It's ok for upset customers to rant and insult and mock (and perhaps it is) but with the power of the internet, the slightest word out of place from an EA / BioWare employee is highly dangerous and invites anger and calls for dismissal. As I mentioned, Jesse has been accused of disrespecting the fans because of the 'look on his face'. I know it's not a level playing field, but it's shocking how unequal a playing field it can be sometimes, it's not a surprise company representatives increasingly say nothing at all.

With all due respect to Jesse, It's bioware's fault for putting the wrong man there. If it were my company, I wouldn't put someone on stream just caus ehe's the lead, I'd put someone there who is empathic and is able to communicate. They really, REALLY need to hire someone who's only job - ONLY JOB - is all outgoing and incoming communication. For all games.

That was fine when they a) had an exceptional reputation and just as importantly has a sizeable core fanbase willing to go into bat for them to spread information and defend their fuck ups (from now on these people will be dubbed 'human shields'). Now that their reputation is er ... and now that they've lost a good chunk of their human shields, they'll need to learn fast how to communicate effectively with their intended audience or they're going to get absolutely shredded.

Certainly sincere. You do wonder about internal processes that led to being in the awkward position of doing that stream though. Bioware seem to be a bit zombie like in their thinking and they really need to be a lot more agile.

What do I think? I think everytime this company face criticism or hostility they come up with a sob story. Personally it's getting repetitive now. No one has yet come out and just said: "Yes we fucked up." It's always excuses and platitudes that "they'll be better." And ofcourse it was posted on Twitter instead of Reddit. He needed to stay in his hugbox. People have spend up to 80 bucks on this game, maybe more. They got their money, I just don't feel sorry for them.

It would have been a terrible idea. Loot is the biggest pain point in the game right now, and you just showcased new content that highlighted the fact that it still hasn't been addressed. Why would you joke about it. You wouldn't do this in any other line of business.
I'm calling to check on the status of my car repairs. We still haven't finished, but you can always use Uber. My cable still isn't back on. We know, but there's really nothing good on television nowadays anyway.
The response from the average person is going to be is this a joke to you. Are you not taking my concerns seriously.
Has nothing to do with being butthurt, or not having a sense of humor. Players are consumers just like in any other industry. They've spent money, and the product is not working as intended, or as promised. Joking about it would have been a terrible idea, and been counterproductive.

People have spend up to 80 bucks on this game, maybe more. They got their money, I just don't feel sorry for them.
I thought this forum is more mature then reddit audience. This is a really poor argument. People complaining mostly played over 60 hours and let me give you an example. I paid GoW 60 dollars and only played for 15 hours. Finished story then done, i didn't find new GoW as fun as old series but that game is selected as game of the year.
So, did I screwed by sony? 60 dollars for 15 hours way expensive then most games. Which reminds me every 60 dollar single player game has 20-25 hours gameplay actually, except Persona 5 and Witcher 3. From your point of view everyone who bought a single player game is cheated by companies.
As a developer and a person, this is my opinion and if i were developing Anthem and an emplyee of Bioware i weill never ever write to Reddit where trolls are running around. Reddit is a place where toxicity and trolling rules. Not so much for decent people. When they say something useful, constructive or meaningful they down voted to the ground but every single complaining up voted.
Everyday i checked AnthemTheGame and first page was full of my loot after 1 hour gmX play. Same post over and over for days up voted. That's plain bullshit.
People had to realize game developers are not their enemy. I hate Bungie for years for not communication to their community and after Anthem i realize how wrong i was. You shouldn't discuss important matters with children and trolls.

Using hours played to determine the value/enjoyment of a video game is a ridiculous argument. Because I could play trash asset flips on Steam for 935763231366 hours, that does not mean that "game" is worth anything.

Yes you are right, and using "i paid 60 dollars so they have to give me everything" is not a valid point either. People paid 60-80 dollars for Anthem and a year of upcoming content. They said it before release. Base game and free updates for year.
