We all wanted it to be a GOTY candidate at the very least. Turns out, it won't get anywhere close. That's the way things happen sometimes. Just because it's not GOTY worthy, doesn't mean it's not still fun to play. If they manage to fix all the issues MEA has with patches like expanding the shit CC and fixing the Facial Animations/Animations and combine that with 3 or 4 LOTSB/Citadel quality SP Dlc's then it could be a real GOTY contender. No it can't. The critical conversation surrounding the game is not strong enough for it to be a contender. Dont forget - most reviews didn't care for the main story; DLC is irrelevant.

Oh goody it's the same people making the same boring points ad nauseum. I wonder how long you guys will keep this up. Probably the same amount of time that your going to defend those same points ad nauseum. I just can't understand how people can look past all the crap that's been given to us in ME:A and somehow call it GOTY. The rose colored glasses are a plenty...

Well, I imagine someone wanted it to follow in ME2's footsteps, so…..mission accomplished? I feel its worse. "We need to know if that planet is safe. Send our most valuable awake people!" Do you guys not have probes on this ship? If they were damaged because of a physical collision with a dark energy cloud that has no mass, say "Dammit the probes are damaged! We have to go in on foot!" When you're on the Kodiak shuttle entering a volatile planet and you just passed a fart cloud of doom, why aren't you wearing a seat belt? Where are the seats? They show you that you can fix 40% of your helmet with omni-tool-spray. Literally the first thing you do on the planet. And then next time your helmet breaks, there is no attempt to fix it. This could fly with a simple line of dialogue "Oh shit, my omnitool is out of super potion!" and then pops says "Shitballs, mine is too!" But couldn't you guys hold your breath for like a minute and both live? Its only been explained that there isn't really oxygen on the planet, not that whatever gas is so toxic it'll kill you instantly. A few small changes in the writing with a couple lines of dialogue and it all makes sense. Its like if you show a guy at the start of the scene in a movie shooting a gun with bullets, then they holster their gun, draw it again to fire and a flower comes out. Without anything in the middle, it makes no god damn sense. The first time it was simply cracked. The second time it was completely broken. I thought that was obvious.

Eh, it is for me, so far.
Problem with industry-wide GOTY is there can be only one, and it looks like we'll have lots of good games this year.

While i enjoy it so far, it does unfortunately have too many problems to be GOTY contender imo. This. The OP said ' the GOTY' not your or my GOTY. The consensus builds from 400-500 review sites and player surveys. On that basis, this accolade isn't happening. What will it be? Red Dead, Shadow of War, BotW, HZD, could be others, but MEA? I don't think so. Doesn't mean it's a bad game, it just means it isn't the best game.

It's my GOTY. Same, mostly because it's the only game I've played this year.

I think if it had decent facial animations (not much, maybe Inquisition level), and wasn't titled Mass effect it would've been GOTY for sure

The moment you realized the music choice for the last trailer was about the devs and not the plot for the game you should have realized also that it would not have any chance of being GOTY.

Not sure how they go about game of the year awards. I'm still trying to finish it (I'm loving it too) as well. If they take launch first impressions into consideration then it'll be remembered as a very buggy game at launch. As I stated, I like the game, my favorite since ME1 since it's the closest to an open world mass effect which is what I visioned the franchise to be. But even though I like it and enjoy it, it's hard to just ignore the various bugs and glitches I encounter. Bugs are expected, but I don't think this many bugs, or even specific bugs that this game has should be ignored. I constantly see npcs or my crew spas out where ever I am whether it's the tempest, the nexus, the planets we explore, it's all over the place lol. There's also audio issues where they cut out (pisses me off when I'm talking to people) or where I'll hear drack talk when I'm not even in his vicinity or even have him recruited yet lol. The opening to this game was just ruined for me when I heard people talking when it had no relevance at that specific time.
Bugs and technical issues aside, even the game itself carries issues. The story was alright, but didn't meet my own expectations, especially for a bioware game (and I normally worship these guys about their story and characters). It'll still end the year as one of the better story games, but only cuz personally many games flat out suck at story so even a mediocre bioware game can do better. Combat wise it's the best ever, which doesn't suprise me as mass effect seems to always improve its combat game by game, I never had an issue with how each progressed it. My only gripe with Andromeda is limiting us to 3 abilities when previous games gave us what? 7 or 8 abilities to use. It really sucks having to pick and choose what to use but maybe if I played around with the profiles I'd have a different perspective.
My favorite reason for loving this game is it's open world esq feeling. The worlds are huge and flat out BEAUTIFUL!!! You can really see the frostbite engine shine and that bioware put a lot of work into making these worlds. I believe I even heard they made these worlds by hand? It shows if they. The best thing is each world is different by looks but also by just their environment and landscape. Eos is a desert effected by radiation, kadara is a gorgeous world with deadly acidic waters and various caves that results in a smugglers paradise (I mean, it is a criminal homeworld essentially), there's then habitat 7 where electrify is just shooting everywhere, floating rocks! And a little history on previous visitors that crashed on the planet. I could go on and on about the worlds. My favorite is (can't remember name ) the one that lacks gravity and you float around, plus jumping the big ass Canyons in the nomad is awesome. When you have an open world style game set on exploration, these worlds being how they are help set that up and gives many possibilities. I loved ME1 because of that, I was disappointed to see ME2 and 3 go to the bland corridor style and practically removed exploration from the picture. I like Andromeda cuz no many games are set on exploration like Andromeda is out in open space, on territory unknown to the Milky Way races. I know many people harp on "fetch quests" but that's not a flaw of being open world, that's just the devs not having time to make them more than that, or them simply not wanting to expand on them. Honestly though one can very easily ignore them if they're an issue though, I've never been one bothered by them.
I also like the game still feeling like mass effect. It still retains the art style of mass effect. The weapons still look the same, the armors still look the same, the structures, the aliens (although some did go through slight changes like the turians being made slimmer but they're still distinguished as turians). The newer weapons and alien races also feel mass effect. The cool thing is with the addition of the frostbite, you see more detail put into these characters. The face paint on the asari and orphan are awesome. It's unfortunate however that much of the npcs have reused assets and look the same as other npcs, I wish they would've tried to get a few more face presets and such to at least make it not as noticeable. I wouldn't expect them to make every single one out there different as that's to much work for how much there are (hundreds if not thousands).
A gripe I have is the character creator. In short, it sucks, especially when you take in the hype that was given out on creating our character. Having tattoos is all fine and dandy, but there's like 9 in total, double that if you can't changing sides on where you want the tattoo. You can't really change your face in detail, it's essentially a character selection where you choose 9 face presets, and then are given the option to slightly change their looks. I wouldn't be suprised to see hundreds of people having identical Ryder's lol. I expected a very In depth character creator and unfortunately I wasn't given that option. I'd use the default Ryder (female) as she looks better than what I can create at the moment, but I can't stand using her if she's going to have that smirk on her anywhere I go regardless of the mood a conversation has. (Spoiler ahead!!!) Like who fucking smirks when your dad just died? I think having the facial animations mixed with a bad CC just ruins personalizing my character. If the CC was good maybe I could've at least masked the awful face animations....
Crafting system: it's alright I guess. As others have said its convoluted but does get easier as you use it more. I hope I'm a future update they can get rid of previous versions of a weapon you crafted. Say I craft a carnifex 7 get rid of the option to craft anything below 7, I don't think people will be trying to make lesser versions when they've got access to better ones. It cleans out the crafting UI and I won't need to sift through so much stuff. Since I'm on about crafting I'll also add in what I think of gathering materials. Where the hell do you find Element zero? So many things I want but can't get the EZO. In all honesty gathering materials is easy so long as you're willing to drive around in the no As looking for the hot spots. There's also the option to buy them but I personally preferred hunting resources down instead of forking up thousands of credits (which I still rarely use, almost to 50k credits). I guess once I finish the game I'll learn if credits will be important in future Plath through so, I've been hoarding mine in case there's something mega rare that costs a ton, especially when I can gather resources to make items rather than give up credits when I may end up finding something only obtained by credit. You can also dismantle weapons and armor for material which just makes it easier and can help save you some time from going in circles in the nomad on a mining zone.
Multiplayer is garbage since I literally can't play it. I was hoping they'd get dedicated servers instead of me having to rely on other users internet. I would've at least figured it'd be just as stable as ME3 at the least but nope, I have had one good game which over a dozen others being lag fests that I'm useless to the team(sorry to the guy that saw me just sitting on his body doing absolutely nothing, I swear I was reviving you but lag would submit the input so I died right on top of you) or I lagout period. I've pretty much stayed away and I hope they fix it, I enjoyed ME3s multiplayer and I looked forward to Andromedas too so long as it stayed as a horde mode based game that expanded on character and weapons.
I guess that's all I have for now. I wasn't initially wanting to make this as big as it is, just wanted to give some if my own thoughts so far. I plan on making my own in depth review later on once I finish the game. To your topic though, MEA can be game if the year, but I think that really depends on how the rest of the year plays out and what they do to vote a winner. If they take launch impression consideration I think the game has quite the battle. If they take how well the game progresses in updates/patches as well as dlc then maybe. I don't know what other games are coming out this year, I really wasn't interested in 2017 games besides Andromeda and maybe destiny 2 (if it launches). I think the game has a lot of issues, but it's still a great game even with its flaws.
Is there a point on why people even care if it wins? There's many games that already get little attention even though they're great but because they're such small dev groups or aren't triple A, they don't get any spot light, which to me sucks cuz many big dev games really aren't deserving when you think on where we are today. Many games release with day one patches, which tells me they knew it'd have issues, but decided to launch it anyways. Many games come with 50$ expansion passes (yea, fuck that) which tends to be a rip off after getting what you get. Many then launch with microTs that use RNG or somehow someway then ties into the campaign where people spend money to make it easier for them.

So far I have only encountered 2 bugs, both of which are nowhere near game breaking. I admit that facial animations are weird, but apart from that it is a great game, my favorite BW game to date.

GOTY contender or not, for me MEA is still a damn enjoyable game. One I see myself repeatedly
playing in the future, just so I can try new class builds out and also have some fun at the sometime.

Goty? .... naah.
With all the tech + SAM, I still can't find my way around the Nexus. Also, Bio did a great job in Havral. It's easy to get lost, I constantly must stop, and look at the map and the inability to name my save files assures that I waste my time when I reload. Havral is one huge freaking maze.
In some areas, it's a frustrating game.
