I would have been plenty fine traversing 4 new planets and discovering what they had to offer without an super duper evil alien race hanging around. They clearly wanted to start fresh with everything being all shiny and new I could have lived w/out an arch enemy. Just learning about the remnant would have been good enough for me.... and fyi I was somebody who wasn't bothered by driving the mako around in Ontarom.

Gotta have some kind of antagonist to create some kind of conflict. If not the kett, it would have simply been a faction of the angarans that are considerably more powerful than the Roekaar. Otherwise, we'd fight nothing but robots that don't have as much depth as the geth. I guess there's also the exiles, but then that would have to play out differently somehow, sort of like us against a character like Quaritch from Avatar.

Lol how would that even be possible. It's basically a fight against a god. He could turn everyone in the room into amoeba if he wanted.

I'm serious what if the conflict was just based around adapting to the new galaxy/worlds. Why did we need to pew pew things in order for it to be interesting? Some of my favorite ME moments didn't even involve having to resolve a conflict w/ combat. I feel like that would have been a radical departure and good start for the AI.
The tone of the game didn't even match the main story... if it was supposed to be about exploration and the remnant that would have been pretty awesome on it's own... wtf did the Kett have to be thrown in for? Just so we had something to CoD at?

I refuse to live in a world with a Mass Effect game that didn't allow me to incinerate, eviscerate, or perhaps even defenestrate my enemies with space magic and high tech weaponry. I love a good meaty story about discovery and exploration and interacting with lots of colorful characters, but I'm not going to kid myself: when it comes to games like Mass Effect, Fallout, Dragon Age and the sort, there's also a very visceral desire to have targets we can provide deadly focus.

They can have that peaceful way in if you want, but only if they allow the full on combat smash their heads in option as well. You have no idea how many times I wanted to shoot sloane in the head whenever I met her.

But wasn't that always secondary to the narrative? I never picked up the first ME back when it first came out (yes I'm oldish) for the action/combat.

This, Also Dragon Age and the Shepherd Trilogy essentially used the same bad guy. Plus, it gives us people to shoot at. This is Mass Effect, not No Man's Sky.

Like it or hate it, it doesn't matter since the combat focus is here to stay if the last few games have shown anything.

We could have fought Angara factions like Roekaar and it would have made more sense.

Combat is pretty much part of the games' central narratives. To push the story forward, we have to kill a great many things to resolve the conflict. That we might be able to choose a non-lethal response to certain situations is basically the exception rather than the rule.

Fair enough.. but what if it is a detriment to what is also great about ME which is the roleplaying aspect? That balance has been off ever since the first entry for me. If the combat is fun or not I could care less if it doesn't support the narrative.

Sure you have to accept Shepard/Ryder have killed hundreds... but did Ryder have a good enough reason to? He wasn't trying to preserve a galaxy at all costs... he was just new to a place that considered him a threat.

I started playing ME because it is sci-fi with cool guns and powers. It is also third person which allows us to see the awesome armor. The narrative has never been a big focus for me. It being good is just a bonus. It doesn't have to be as long as the game play holds up.

Yes, there is Destiny and a few others, but generally speaking. Third person Sci-fi shooters with ME's level of technology and powers is kind of rare.
