Ryder is inexperienced. Drack is old and grizzled, Vetra is a mercenary and a smuggler, Cora was part of an Asari commando unit and was being groomed to be a Pathfinder, Liam is a Crisis response expert, and security officer. The crew as a whole was not inexperienced. I was referring to their age as in the majority of the crew were young the only old guy on the team was Drack. Yes the team had some combat experience but not as much as they were going to really need for this kind of assignment really which was what I was pointing out. So in this instance they were inexperienced But that's the thing that never makes sense. Say you're in charge of the initiative, and you're selecting Pathfinder teams. Are you taking the best of the best proven people for this mission since the numbers are so small, or are you picking green, inexperienced recruits? What kind of training are you giving them? This is a team where any one person may need to step up and be pathfinder. This is one of the things that never made sense to me. The only way I could reconcile Ryder being that way was chalking it up to nepotism.

I'm not a huge fan of the MEA dialogue. Occasionally it felt very forced and/or juvenile, especially the romance and humor.
However, this could purely be because I am getting older (and am a curmudgeon). Goofy, light-hearted humor doesn't appeal to me as much as wry wit and situational comedy. It seems like the latter is more difficult to write (although I have no idea if that is true), which may be why some folks think the game is poorly written. I personally think this is a little unfair, and I don't think the writing is poor at all. It is just that the style/focus is more lighthearted than previous games.

I wouldn't call it infantile, but Bioware games have always had immature writing. Some of it seems to be aimed at pre-teens and teens. ME is not a universe to be taken seriously, not for me anyway.

Uhhh... Mass Effect fans and newcomers to the series? In an ideal world they would have offered gooffy for the ones liking that approach and serious for others. As it is, you can avoid gooffy for the most part. It reduces your choices even further in a not abundantly stocked dialogue wheel and you already have to know what comes out of your characters mouth when choosing a certain option, but it can be done - for the most part. What can't be remedied, short of spamming the skip button, are certain cutscenes. After finishing Eos and the crew assembling in the meeting room, I was like WTF. I don't want to say that and I don't want to listen to that. Imo, the more light-hearted (in your words "goofy") approach to ME:A was a much welcomed relief from the emotional roller coaster that was ME3 and the despair inducing ending therein. I was honestly depressed and terrified for the future of Mass Effect after ME3 whereas I'm incredibly excited for ME:A2 this time around. I really liked the greenhorn feel to the crew in ME:A. These people are not professional soldiers, but rather newly minted explorers. I think the way they act fits who they are portrayed to be. Ryder is through into a situation he/she is not prepared for and has no idea how to cope with it and it fits like a glove. Abandoning the Paragon/Renegade system was the right choice as now you can act in shades of grey instead of being an absolute angel or a fucking psychopath. I found the new dialogue system to accurately portray what Ryder would say and was never taken aback by the what he/she said. I loved the Citadel DLC feel to ME:A. Surely not everyone does, but I sure as hell did.

Can't see why it would affect same business model being used for Andromeda. And hey, both were published by the biggest companies in their respective media too (EA & Disney).

The writing and characters are so infantile anyone over the age of 13 would not find them acceptable but the level of language and sex in the game make it inappropriate for kids. The tone and content of this game are like oil and water. People who want cheap laughs and like shooters

I don't see a big issue with a young crew. What's the right kind of experience, and who has it? Citadel policy was to avoid doing anything that might lead to first contact with new aliens, and except for the humans they'd been quite successful in recent decades.

The tone and content of this game are like oil and water. That's one of the things that drove me crazy. It's supposed to be a game about exploration of a new galaxy; ship comes out and is almost destroyed...and yet...they mix in dialogue and character interactions that feel more like a f**king bad sitcom then a science fiction show. I get that nobody wanted Shepherd 2.0 but did we have to get a spineless doofus that sounds like the fat guy that talks to animals in the Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwich commercial? Roaming the planets in the shaggin wagon grinding quests got tedious but I would always dread the ride in the ship back to the Nexus because I knew..someone was going to say something stupid.

You ever watch Firefly? That was the aim. Joss Whedon-style banter writing. Don't say that. Joss Whedon's writing was good and the show was entertaining. The writing in this game feels more like Two and a half men or some other sitcom dreck.

Agree it was very citadel-y. I hope the next game takes a more serious tone but as a whole I didn't mind it that much. I thought it was kind of cute. However the squadmates weren't interesting enough IMO - Cora was my favorite because I found her derpy and funny but the rest seemed like kind of watered down versions of typical Bioware tropes.
