Don't give a shit. What I do give a shit about is that he's basically a way Bioware absolves themselves of addressing the shortcomings with Reyes and Gil, our actually intended romances.

He wasn't romanceable before. Unlike Liam he didn't even give you the option to flirt and be turned down. They said as much that they had to change their minds about him.

And he's cheaper than recalling voice actors to record more Reyes/Gil lines and scenes.

It's a cop out, that simple.
This is a profoundly stupid argument.

Making an argument that Bio should have designed the initial batch of romances differently is one thing. That's a winnable argument; we know it's a winnable argument because it was, in fact won. This kind of surprises me, since originally the devs didn't even see a distinction between squadmate and non-squadmate romances; when people asked them about this at cons, they didn't even understand the question well enough to duck it.

But we don't get to live in a universe where ME:A was designed differently. We live in this one. And since nobody's going to sign off on funding for a gay male romance DLC, the options are what the patch does, or nothing.

Is nothing better? If so, why?
