Drew's involvement with Anthem was literally the only thing that had me - moderately - interested in the game. Any word yet on who will be taking up his role? Far as I'm aware Anthem has various writers on the project so I don't think a replacement is necessarily "needed". Especially if he left cause what he was there to do is done but that's only an assumption on my part. If that really is the case then there's no reason to worry, if he left cause the writing direction took a turn then 🤷🏻♀️ Who knows.

I wonder if his leaving has more to do with "The Old Republic" than "Anthem". He returned back to BioWare in September 2015 to write for the MMO and only moved to "Anthem" in June 2017, less than a year ago. With "Anthem" a year from release, and with EA saying the delay was just to not compete with it's own Battlefield V, you'd think the main writing is done at this point with only the crunch and polish to "Gold" status left.

I'm pretty much going with the writing being done at this point and that they're applying it to the game (if they already haven't). I'm guessing their beta announcement will be at E3 which is only a few months down the road and with a year left on development I'd say they're just polishing it up for the most part at this point and maybe putting the finishing touches on some of the games aspects. i don't see an issue with drew leaving myself as I'm pretty sure they have multiple writers on Anthem, I imagine they had drew only writing a few parts and he finished so now he's off. This does mean drew won't be around to write future content for the game as well but that's where the other writers come in to play.

If they indeed were on pace for the Fall 2018 release, as EA implied, and only moved it to ensure revenue in EA fiscal Q4 2018 (Jan - Mar 2019), the window is pretty tight in terms of when it could have initially been ready so the bulk of the writing would have been completed a while ago. Yeah, it's unfortunate he won't be around to continue with narrative input but it's not crippling to the game's future.

What a funny thing BioWare is. Casey comes back and Drew leaves. I wonder if the two of them get along because it was my impression Drew was sort of elbowed out of the original Trilogy by the Mac + Casey clique (because in reality Mac was more willing to do Casey's bidding than Drew)

I wonder if the two of them get along because it was my impression Drew was sort of elbowed out of the original Trilogy by the Mac + Casey clique (because in reality Mac was more willing to do Casey's bidding than Drew) Drew said he left to complete his "Chaos Born" trilogy, which indeed happened as three separate books were released from 2013 - 2015 before he came back to work on "The Old Republic". I guess it's possible but Drew appears to be more in the freelance writer vein as opposed to Mac or Jay who don't really produce anything other than BioWare-connected products. With that in mind, I wonder how that might impact someone like Patrick Weekes in the future who has released a number of books, the most recent on being "Feeder", with no connection to BioWare. Does he go the freelance route at somepoint or is happy being essentially the main person in charge of the Dragon Age franchise's narrative direction at this point while releasing independent novels on the side?

I doubt he needed a big elbowing to accept that post.

Hopefully a lot of Anthem story is done at this point. Assuming you have to write it before you can develop it (or record dialogue) I would have thought so...

I'm sure it's fine. They probably finished up the writing long ago. No studio would wait until the last 1-1/2 yrs of production time to do the writing...

If it's all because "writing is done" why there are no news about writers returning to DA4 or SWTOR stories? Everyone is still working for Anthem it seems.

It never seems to make the news unless they leave BioWare as a whole, then unlike other studios its proof the production is troubled and the game is doomed.

Hey guys, Karpyshyn leaving Bioware before Anthem goes gold is actually good news! It means the writing is done! And we all know games never change direction at the later stages! Especially not Bioware games! Phew! Just gonna take a nap now. Where's my gaslight remote?

Drew leaving again only a couple of years after returning leaves me thinking something's not right. People leave, people come back, but for someone to leave then come back then leave again shortly after is a bit weird.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug as well, he might have forgotten how much of a toll working at BioWare took on his side projects which seems to be what he wants to go back to with leaving at least that is what I took away from his blog.

Gameinformer agrees with you. www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2018/03/09/mass-effect-2-lead-writer-drew-karpyshyn-leaves-bioware-again.aspxSpecifically, they say "Speculation is usually a poor way to grasp the true nature of what's going on inside a developer, especially since talent is changing all the time, but it's hard not to be concerned for BioWare's future in light of Andromeda's lackluster quality and the high number of respected names leaving the studio in a short period of time. " This has me more and more worried for the future of Bioware and their flagship titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

" This has me more and more worried for the future of Bioware and their flagship titles like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I think it's click-baity claptrap. The threat to BioWare is Anthem screwing up, not a writer leaving 12m before release (even a well known one). A writer of Drew's stature is not going to go short of work and they can likely dictate exactly what they do, based on how much fun it is.

Other than Drew the only high profile dev to leave was Mike Laidlaw and he was never on Anthem.

On a side note, I wonder if Anthem will have a prequel novel like all other Bioware games?

Meh. I take a rather philosophical view about "name" writers on games. Very, very few writers are consistently good across a long career. Any given game, or even writing task within a game, could be mediocre or worse. And since AAA game writing is usually a team effort anyway (with a few auteur exceptions), I don't think it's worth getting glad or sad about any particular writer coming or going. I had the same thoughts around all the hoopla about Alexis Kennedy's stint.
Besides, sometimes a familiar name with no specific accolades busts out a command performance completely unexpectedly. Like Lukas Kristjanson writing Sera in DAI. He's been around forever, but I don't see Game Informer singling him out for an article.
Personally, I think name recognition is more a curse than a blessing, and a poor predictor of future results.

It might not even be that. One of my sisters used to get solid pay jobs out of the US where there is a tax free treaty, put up with it for a couple years so she can save up enough money to do what she loves which is writing. Now she does a few month gigs for the UN to cover the bills. Work for Bioware for a couple years to cover the bills, then once you have enough saved up move onto projects you really want.
