Depending on the side of the fence you stand, either you believe the Kotaku investigative journalism article that EA put the ME brand of ice and split up the Montreal studio to work on other projects or you believe the Kotaku article is just clickbait and that the ME brand is alive and well and very vibrant and EA is very enthusiastic about continuing to create ME games starting with MEA DLC and soon MEA2 and using DA2 as a case study on how a game that was received poorly, still saw DLC and even a sequel. Others are standing in the middle and not quite sure what to make of the silence from EA regarding the future of MEA. Focusing on that last sentence, a lot of the people who believe that EA is still interested in supporting more ME games likes to point to the fact that both EA and Bioware has not officially came out to confirm (or deny) that Mass Effect is put on ice due to the poor reception that MEA took along with the lower than expected review scores. However, if we try to wait for EA to confirm this, are we just waiting for something that will never come?
Think about it, publishers and developers, especially ones as large as Electronic Arts and Bioware rarely ever come out to explicitly say that a particular game or brand is dead. You may hear that a game that is in development is now cancelled like Star Wars 1313, or that a particular studio is now shut down like Pandemic, but you never hear that a game or franchise is dead and that there will not longer be any sequels due to poor review scores or financials. I mean, why would they? To me it seems so much more logical to just let a brand quietly die rather than make an announcement that a brand is dead which isn't good PR. Even today, Bioware has never officially said that there will not be a Jade Empire 2 or KOTOR 3. They may beat around the bush and say stuff like, "we are always exploring options...." or something more like, "we understand the commitment fans have towards [insert game] and we at [insert studio] are always looking at ways we can offer exciting and fresh stories and experiences to our consumers...." or something like that. Studios would kind of try to hint at they are wanting to move forward, but yet they never officially close the door on the possibility that a certain game can receive a sequel because they do not want to upset their fanbase by saying a game will not get a sequel. Imagine the fallout if EA/Bioware announced that there will not be DLC for MEA and there will not be a MEA2. One one side you will have supporters of MEA raged at Bioware for not continuing the story and for falling victim to internet memes made by people who want to take down the brand and how they just gave up. Then on the other side you would probably see a huge celebration and a resurgence of more memes about MEA and how it was a failure and what not. Either way, it would be a PR nightmare no matter what side you look on. Again, just look at KOTOR 3 and Jade Empire 2. For the most part, we are not getting these games, but because Bioware or EA has not confirmed this, that hope remains open, even after over a decade that the last game was released. Even Saren in Mass Effect 1 mentioned something about us humans being emotional rather than logical and that we will fight even though we know we cannot win. I want a KOTOR 3 with Anthem-style graphics but I know I will not get it.....but because Bioware or EA has never explicitly said there will not be a KOTOR 3, like Jim Carey in Dumb n Dumber, that thin line of hope still remains there.....so you're telling me there is a chance.
Going back to the future of Mass Effect Andromeda or the Mass Effect brand as a whole, do you think that EA/Bioware will actually announce that it is indeed dead? Or will Mass Effect (assuming it is put on ice) enter into the same closet as KOTOR 3 and Jade Empire 2 where it is obvious that Bioware is moving on, but because they never officially announced that MEA is put on ice, many people still use that as proof that DLC is incoming or that a sequel is coming.
So what are your thoughts? Do you think this is something EA/Bioware should announce? I mean, what do they have to gain if they did? It could do more harm than good as MEA is really toxic right now in the media and announcing that the brand is dead will just be adding fuel to a fire that is already out of control going all the way back to the ME3 ending debacle. Or would it make more sense for them to just not confirm or deny anything and assuming the brand is dead, just let it die a quiet death and hope that games like Anthem and DA4 are enough to change the subject along with a possible announcement of yet another new IP lead by the Montreal team.
Disclaimer: This thread is NOT a debate on if MEA is dead or not, we can discuss that in other threads. This thread is purely about how EA/Bioware should handle the brand in the even that it is dead. Please keep any replies related to that and not turn it into a MEA is alive vs MEA is dead debate.

Same as Jade Empire. There is no reason to announce anything, unless the IP is sold. The entertainment world is volatile, and everything is possible. I might yet be playing JE2. And if not, I have my fond memories, and I want the same to happen to A1.

JE2 would be awesome, doubtful though since it's been 12 years since the first. @op: the kotaku article did state EA still has strong expectations for the franchise, so isn't that a statement that it's not dead? The game may be mixed, but it hardly failed or bombed.

Nope, which is why all the talk of it being dead and even the hiatus talk feels so absurd. It was like jumping to a conclusion that was never really supported. If they wouldn't say that the franchise is done, why are people reporting it is? The logic there just doesn't work. It's insane actually and drummed up by a bunch of haters or to generate clicks from a bunch of haters.

The game may be mixed, but it hardly failed or bombed. Yeah, IIRC, that article quoted them with that and then went out of its way to dismiss it. Actually I think the quote was added just to have some whiff of credibility but it was at the end after all the ridiculous speculation about the game's future. Even just a week or two ago someone from kotaku went to on reddit with tl;dr post to regain some credibility because so many felt his articles were just to generate clickbait (which he even stated in that post) and not based in fact. My personal thoughts are that this isn't like television where months from now if the show doesn't show up people who watch it will be sad or pissed. It's about the gaming industry where even if there was only one game BW was making it would probably take at least 2 years. All the commentary about hiatus and ME being dead is needless (and for fans unwanted) drama.

I think it depends on the time differnce really if it's kind of been 10 years since the last one or longer without any word then I think you can be sure it isn't returning MEA only released 3 months ago so it's far too early to assume anything just yet. We may even be playing the first of MEA's DLC's within the next month or 2 yet so we shouldn't write it off. At least not yet I don't think. I just think we should just go into a wait and see moe and see what happens next if anything. Right now though I wouldn't say ME is dead. If we don't hear anything after about 5 years or more then possibly yes it may be considered dead but that hasn't happened yet.

They won't announce anything because just like when people said ME3 was the last ME game ever, they proved that's not true. Even if MEA was on hold for another 5 years, another is going to happen. It's inevitable.

Let's operate under the flawed assumption that Mass Effect is considered "Dead" by EA/BioWare, why on Earth would they come out and say it? Why would they make something like that official? Half the BioWare store is Mass Effect products, ME:A MP is still a "thing", they have 2 more books coming out, they have comic book series on its 2nd issue, they have some MacFarlane toys coming out in August - they'd have to be pretty shortsighted. In terms of "should they?", again, no. How would make any sense?

They would never come out and say the franchise is dead while the game is out. Why would anyone buy it, or do multiple playthroughs with different choices if there won't be another game where this stuff carries over in some way. It wouldn't make any business sense to say anything other than we continue to support the franchise, even if they were planning on shelving it.

In terms of "should they?", again, no. How would make any sense? Well I ask because people seem conflicted about the future of MEA and it appears that people are holding Bioware and EA as the arbiter of this all and waiting for them to confirm something. Personally I do not think Bioware will say anything about MEA's future, to include DLC, but that does not mean there wont be DLC. So I do not think they should announce that it is dead if it is dead, but if it is still alive, should they come out and just say, "Yes, DLC IS in the works...." in order to make things official because in the past Bioware came out after launch of a game and said more story content is coming, so why the silience now? So I guess my question really is, should EA and Bioware just come out and directly say there is MEA DLC coming? What do they have to gain by remaining so silent?

Did they do it for Dead Space? If not you'll know if they stop releasing ME books among other things to keep people interested in ME between games.

So a follow up question is, if the franchise is alive, shouldn't they make that known? If DLC is in the works, why not mention that MEA sold well and met all expectations and that Montreal is hard at work on continuing the Ryder story through DLC? I understand the rationale behind not announcing that the franchise is dead, but what is the rationale behind not announcing that more MEA content is coming?

They did talk about it, and said when they are allowed to mention future content they will. EA is the ones that hold that leash, same with the whole bi Jaal and patch 1.08 that Ian said he could not speak of due to marketing.

What do they have to gain by remaining so silent? They haven't remained silent. They've actually gone out of their way to say it's still alive in an earnings report. "Earlier this week on an earnings call, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson told investors that the publisher is “very happy with how BioWare is doing, how BioWare is treating Mass Effect. And our expectations for Mass Effect are still strong for the future and the franchise overall.”" kotaku.com/sources-bioware-montreal-downsized-mass-effect-put-on-1795100285
