Let's operate under the flawed assumption that Mass Effect is considered "Dead" by EA/BioWare, why on Earth would they come out and say it? Why would they make something like that official? Half the BioWare store is Mass Effect products, ME:A MP is still a "thing", they have 2 more books coming out, they have comic book series on its 2nd issue, they have some MacFarlane toys coming out in August - they'd have to be pretty shortsighted. In terms of "should they?", again, no. How would make any sense? Well I ask because people seem conflicted about the future of MEA and it appears that people are holding Bioware and EA as the arbiter of this all and waiting for them to confirm something. Personally I do not think Bioware will say anything about MEA's future, to include DLC, but that does not mean there wont be DLC. So I do not think they should announce that it is dead if it is dead, but if it is still alive, should they come out and just say, "Yes, DLC IS in the works...." in order to make things official because in the past Bioware came out after launch of a game and said more story content is coming, so why the silience now? So I guess my question really is, should EA and Bioware just come out and directly say there is MEA DLC coming? What do they have to gain by remaining so silent? BioWare's MO has always been that they are pretty stealth when it comes to announcing DLC. Look at the DLC release announcements for DA: Inquisition...news dropped and the stuff was out in a hurry. In lieu of that, I don't its in their best interest to change coarse from their normal operating procedure nor make it a habit or responding to speculation. With silence, they control the narrative. Kotaku and the like may speculate away but they have zero insight in terms of the direction of the franchise post-release and really only have a window into its haphazard creation. BioWare has a marketing schedule that has been planned out in advance...why would they want to deviate from that just to make statements that may open itself up to more questions?

They would never come out and say the franchise is dead while the game is out. Why would anyone buy it, or do multiple playthroughs with different choices if there won't be another game where this stuff carries over in some way. It wouldn't make any business sense to say anything other than we continue to support the franchise, even if they were planning on shelving it. I understand the rationale behind not announcing that the franchise is dead, but what is the rationale behind not announcing that more MEA content is coming? Shortening the gap between the announcement and the release is a winning strategy. You buy a new shiny toy that way, not something you've been hearing for years and therefore feels like an old shoe; the staff does not get distracted by the junk tweets and pay it forward criticism; and allows to avoid any problems with "you lied to us!" when any vagaries of development makes a delay or change of plans necessary.
The hype & bust is becoming a psychological phenomenon on the internet, and it's becoming like a sugar crush for many emotionally unstable people following serialized releases in the entertainment industry. It's sort of like the "good old days" on steroids. Only we used to laugh at the grumpy old foggies....
The only reason to announce early is to rise capital, or to pull a scam. PR wise, short notice announcement is way, way better.

Personally, I think the fan base should just stop trying to tell Bioware how to run the business end of their business. It's up to their Board of Directors what they decide to announce and when. Bioware shouldn't have to coddle their fans all the time... Fans who do seem to be inordinately insecure. It's like the fan base wants Bioware to raise their hand to ask every time the CEO might even be thinking about taking a P*ss.

Not the game itself. Just the people complaining and demanding things they don't deserve imo.

They made all this effort to cram all the RPG-stuff into the Frostbite-Engine, made all the tools needed for animations and quest-progression. Now they have a working template for the next part of the series. And Bioware showed they can make the bulk of a game of this scale in basically 18 months. It would be borderline stupid to abandon all this assets.

I can see them doing a giant U turn and redoing the trilogy. I don't see that option ending well. You just know that OT fans in general will probably shit on everything as a gross distortion of everything they loved about the trilogy, assuming that we're talking about an actual remake and not a remaster. I think that remaining in some kind of story loop that confines the timeline to just those few years in the OT would do the franchise no favors.

I don't see a reason for EA to ever announce ME is dead even if that were the case, which I don't think it is. They did with Command and Conquers series and quite openly announced in advance the studios closures involved in developing that franchise. This did not happen with ME:A nor Bioware Montreal, so it would strongly go against EA's historic precedent. While also adding to it that ME:A sold way above EA's set expectations, unlike C&C4 Tiberian Twilight.

No OP, you have to wait. When summer will be finished and you will ask again, people one more time will ask you to wait bit longer. Around christmas don't even ask, cause no one will reply.

No company will any proclaim the death of one of their products. Let alone an emotional one like Mass Effect. So I don't expect them to annouce anything unless another Mass Effect game is on the horizon. Let's keep this short and simple. If we hear nothing, there will be nothing. If we hear something, there will be something.

It would be borderline stupid to abandon all this assets. Agreed. Even if no game 2018 (duh), 2019 (fine, focus on getting Anthem and DA out), maybe 2020 - I don't see anything big yet about the series being 'dead'. At mostly worst, I can see it being given just 'one more shot', but that's how it almost always works for everything anyway. Maybe trilogy remaster. Maybe deal with trilogy more than earlier intended. Maybe taking a break to later regroup. Maybe wait and see how people think of MEA in a year or two after media, updates, and maybe DLC all get out, and maybe other Bioware games. Maybe maybe. But dead? Eh, possible, but I neither side with those thinking ME is 'certainly dead', nor those that think there's no chance. IF 'Mass Effect is truly dead', they likely won't announce it for a while. I'd be astonished if it happened this year, surprised if it happened next year, though sure it could happen after that, as they'd want gamers to mourn and get over ME so they can possibly be more avid about other Bioware titles. I don't expect to see an announcement though. So far, I lean towards expecting more MEA patches, MP updates, and indeed at least a bit of DLC, and consideration towards another game. Only leaning, due to how MEA played out, but still leaning.

This did not happen with ME:A nor Bioware Montreal, so it would strongly go against EA's historic precedent. While also adding to it that ME:A sold way above EA's set expectations, unlike C&C4 Tiberian Twilight. I think ME is OK. People can have their subjectivity and opinion about their products, but as a continued franchise I still think it is OK. If they have to draw down their development in order to make Anthem and DA successes, go for it. If they think its better to take a year or two to more passively review how they'll make the next game, go for it. There will still be Anthem updates and maybe sequel, and DA DLC/updates and such to care about in the meantime anyway. And I doubt a Next Mass Effect will change engine or jump to so huge new ambitions anyway - lets hope for refinements, polish, and better action made on the 'promise' presented by MEA (and in a way imo, ME3; but that's another discussion and personal view). I can't say I'm any longer a positive Mass Effect fanatic (been years since that and MEA didn't make it better), but to me its still got life in it, at the very least enough that EA probably won't, and probably thinks it shouldn't have any 'death' announcements. A scaled down Montreal may just mean focused on DLC, support for Edmonton again, that sort of thing, instead of a jump towards following up on some gigantically successful (as in, it wasn't) MEA. For all we know at least. I think they just want to give the series a bit of time to breathe (hopefully helped by what DLC makes happen, but we'll see) and go back to it. Maybe if there was no Anthem and there was only Dragon Age they'd be faster to a return. Maybe if MEA was a smash GOTY hit they'd be faster to return. Maybe not. But a death announcement is likely premature. I guess Anthem could be hugely successful enough that the money people decide there's just no way ME should happen again and Bioware should devote almost everything to Anthem. Okay. (Even then, DA is IMO unlikely to be shut down so there's that chance to show people what RPG Bioware/2000s Bioware properties can still do.)

Hard to know what the mindset is of the suits over at EA is. Ultimately I think they have the final say on the fate of the franchise. I don't know what the sales numbers were for MEA. Hopefully they were still decent despite the internet's childish behavior toward the game.

I doubt it'll be the greatest thing ever down the line. People who got into BW games got into them for the stories, the characters, the RP reasons. Anthem is more a MP focused game and since MP is hot currently, they are banking on that for the money. Sadly they won't gain a lot of SP supporters and that's the bigger fanbase than the MP players, also SP was around longer and has more followers too.

And our expectations for Mass Effect are still strong for the future and the franchise overall.”" kotaku.com/sources-bioware-montreal-downsized-mass-effect-put-on-1795100285

I think we'll see changes in the way the information is related over time, as the PR are looking for ways of dealing with the information-saturated world & easily adversarial audiences. It's a hard task. Yeah twice now marketing has chosen the "wait and see" PR and it didn't work well. First time was the romances, second was the m/m romance in patch 1.08. Now the DLC is being kept quiet until marketing says it's time and people are just getting out of hand now. Mmgh, I thought it actually worked well with 1.08, and keeping mum about DLC imo tired out and cleared out a lot of less tenacious trolls. If they knew DLC was in works, we'd have far more angst about how it's going be horrible and not like Trespasser and what not. I dunno. I personally prefer short notices, so I am bias.

Not on Twitter. The m/m players were pretty vocal when nothing was being said about bi Jaal. They started to dread and give up hope and it was pretty depressing. I'm cool with waiting for something myself, but the majority seems to want things asap.

So a follow up question is, if the franchise is alive, shouldn't they make that known? If DLC is in the works, why not mention that MEA sold well and met all expectations and that Montreal is hard at work on continuing the Ryder story through DLC? I understand the rationale behind not announcing that the franchise is dead, but what is the rationale behind not announcing that more MEA content is coming?I don't understand why they're being so tight lipped about the DLC. Now that the rumor is out there, they do risk people just moving on to something else. I remember after DA2 came out, and had its less than optimal reception we'll say. They put out some screenshots that showed some of the areas in Legacy, and said more details coming at a later date. Started a new conversations because so many people were mad about the reused areas. That's why I don't think they'll be another ME game five years from now like some people are saying. If the reception for this game wasn't great to the point where you wanted to keep going while the iron was hot, why would they think people would flock back five years from now. I doesn't make any sense. The entirety of the OT was out in five years. Or like DA:O, they couldn't get DLC and an expansion out fast enough, they were coming out once a month almost, and DA2 got put out quickly just to capitalize on the popularity of the game. They can't take a five year hiatus on the franchise at this point and think the next game will be successful.

Thing is, assuming that either an announcement or silence doesn't affect their own schedule to any release of DLC, people will still move on to other things while they wait. If they announce the DLC at the last minute, I doubt the people who actually like the game enough to buy DLC in the first place are going to not buy it just because the announcement came later than they might like.

Hard to know what the mindset is of the suits over at EA is. Ultimately I think they have the final say on the fate of the franchise. I don't know what the sales numbers were for MEA. Hopefully they were still decent despite the internet's childish behavior toward the game. Well, so far they've announced to their shareholders that their mindset is positive towards Mass Effect. "Earlier this week on an earnings call, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson told investors that the publisher is “very happy with how BioWare is doing, how BioWare is treating Mass Effect. And our expectations for Mass Effect are still strong for the future and the franchise overall.”" kotaku.com/sources-bioware-montreal-downsized-mass-effect-put-on-1795100285And that is from the same article where it was reported that the franchise is being put on hiatus. That is interesting. Of course it could be said the franchise was on Hiatus after ME 3 since there was a 5 year gap. It really could be as simple as where resources are being allocated.
