Ok, just think about this for a second.... And I am speaking as a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a Minor (6 creds short of a double major) in Religion. I am an Atheist, and I work as a Gaffer and DMX Tech on movies and TV sets, and am still paying my student loan for a degree I will never "make money" from. I don't consider my education a waste, but I do think if I had been less idealistic as a young man and perhaps had a shred of guidance from a parent (mine are not the guidance types), maybe I would have used my degree to learn something interesting and make money while doing it. People that study fields that are unlikely to pay them well in the future, are either idealistic and ignorant (me) or hopelessly stupid. Crossroads. The extremes of politics, like the extremes of religion, are where the absurd cringe fringe reside, and I for one think they should be killed with vengeance. I am tired of it. I will say one more thing against my better judgment, Quiggles, because it's bothering me: if certain people hadn't majored in such a financially risky field as theatre, do you think you would have a job working on film and tv sets? What if all the actors who went to drama schools and the writers who specialized in screenwriting hadn't done that? They might still produce -- but far, far more slowly -- and many would not do it at all, because it is very, very hard to consistently produce or train (not to mention audition) in one of these artforms while working 40 hrs/week doing something else, especially if that position is salaried and so requires you to take work home or stay late.Well, your better judgement should have taken hold. Writers and actors get paid absurdly in my world, and are either young as hell and never sacrificed for a thing in their life, or have been acting for years and made it years ago. The writers? Holy shit, I don't have the time and never will. I have no sympathy, whatsoever, for the starving artist. I have been one most of my life, and now I am not, and that is how the world works for ambitious dreamers with very little planning or direction. They either make it or end up in the gutter, and that is the direct result of piss-poor planning. A healthy society with a dynamic, thriving culture worth living in needs all kinds of people contributing to it -- there is symbiosis -- your more practical job working tech on tv & movie sets fundamentally depends on people who did not choose a financially 'safe' path for their lives. Otherwise your job would not even exist, or there would be fewer opportunities for it (working newsrooms, for ex), and maybe you wouldn't have been hired over someone else. Maybe people shouldn't major in these things just for the shit of it, because without passion and dedication (+ lots of luck, or independent wealth) you won't make it in these increasingly competitive arts fields, at least not in the US system. While majoring in philosophy does have value -- and may have in fact given you some of the skills that helped you succeed -- it's probably not a super great idea to major in philosophy if you don't want to be a philosopher/philo professor at a university, or do not have the mind to make it far enough in that highly competitive arena (I mean no disrespect by that--just that philo is like mathematics, not everyone can do it professionally). But if everyone followed this advice because doing otherwise is ignorant or stupid, where would we be? The rest is simply LOL. I can philosophize as well as I need to, I graduated Summa. Law was a possibility, but I became repulsed by it because I am ruled by human compassion and abhor greed. Studying something that will earn you money in the future will allow you to be more artistic, because you won't be starving. If you can eke out a living, and are doing something you love, and are reasonably content, then you have made better decisions than I have. I congratulate you. The School of Hard Knocks is for shitheads, and I speak as a Graduate with Distinction.

They might still produce -- but far, far more slowly -- and many would not do it at all, because it is very, very hard to consistently produce or train (not to mention audition) in one of these artforms while working 40 hrs/week doing something else, especially if that position is salaried and so requires you to take work home or stay late.Fair enough -- I'm not so presumptuous to school you on your own field. I just lived in LA for awhile and know people from the USC program as well as people with related degrees (such as MFAs in fiction writing) who have moved there for screenwriting, etc. I know MFAs in fiction who want to write for games, too. So I am thinking of them when I write this -- people I know personally who majored in theatre arts, visual arts, and literary arts who are attempting to enter either the televisual and gaming industries as writers or designers, depending... I don't know any actors, though. Just extras. Well, there is the person who tries to make it "on their art" form of choice, who isn't likely to succeed unless they are blessed by god and probably needs to figure something out, and then there is the person in the arts field who attempts to find work within the parameters of that field instead of doing something completely unrelated. In many arts and humanities fields -- fields deemed "useless" by the market -- the goal is to get work teaching because the production of art is built into the job itself. But teaching jobs that once were plentiful are now scarce. It's kind of a mess. And, in my field, when I started on my path, there were many more uni jobs, and the promise of jobs if you achieved X, Y, Z. Now it is not ever enough; the goalposts keep changing every time I achieve one. And anytime a uni cuts the budget, "useless" fields like the arts and humanities -- less profitable ones for the uni -- are the first to go. I know I am talented at what I do -- and have recognition in my field for that -- but the opportunities that were available to someone like me ten years ago are no longer here. Personally, I am not trying to live (or starve) as an artist, I just want the kind of paid work that allows me to succeed in both endeavors without developing a cocaine habit. Okay, as I said I meant no disrespect, I didn't even mean that you couldn't do it personally -- only that not everyone is like the Next [Insert Famous Contemporary Philosopher I dunno like Noam Chomsky or something] and not everyone has both the stamina and chops to make it in philosophy academia, and those people probably shouldn't major in philosophy. So, basically conceding that people should know their own limitations, and make decisions based on that. For example, I do know people who have majored in philosophy who aren't quite "on the level" and they probably shouldn't have done that. Not saying that you couldn't do it if that's what you really wanted to do, because I don't know you. I would agree with this if FT jobs themselves -- especially the salaried ones that truly pay enough to buy a house, car, start a family, and include medical and retirement -- weren't so ridiculously demanding, mentally speaking. I'm working about 40 hours right now doing contractual work at home, and let's just say that I am just tired right now. I should work "after work" -- I should be working instead of typing this, and probably will go try -- but I'm not sure my brain is up for that. When I was working half the hours as a graduate student, I was able to do both things -- the money-making things and the actually fulfilling things -- but FT work is exhausting, and what I am doing is not even that demanding in and of itself. If I were working in a salaried position instead of a freelancing one (say, commuting to an office and possibly staying late to get projects done), I just don't see how I could succeed at both endeavors at the same time. I feel like I would go in dedicated, but there are only so many days you can wake up at 5am to work on your art, or stay up until 2am to work, without burning out. Maybe I need to do something with my hands that doesn't require me to think... I'm not starving, but I could be, if I hit some bad luck.

Kinda tempted to start posting harmless gifs to make sure it gets to 25 but I don't want to step on Faceman's MO. I guess the rant had to happen. The anti sjw cult needed to be called out. They are just as bad as the people they complain about and they don't see it. I am just so sick of their damn hyperbole where everything is sjw to them. They think everything is sexist and racist against them and they sound just like Anita. First they accused the entirety of DAI as being SJW even though the dialogs with Krem about gender can be completely bypassed and skipped and Dorian's quest is about 5 minutes long at max (if even that), and that is a 100 hour game. Last I checked I spent most of my time in DAI running around the wilderness killing crap and building up the Inquisition. Not exactly the lgbtq dating simulator they claim it is. Then they got even more ridiculous with MEA claiming default Sara was an SJW conspiracy because they didn't like how she looked. Well guess she isn't bad looking at all. In fact she is quite cute. So what have they got next? Well apparently the cc is an sjw conspiracy because they claim you can't make a white Ryder well guess what all of my Ryders have been pretty pasty (not to mention both of the default twins and default Alec are white), so what's next? Hainley Abrams? Another case of easy to miss dialog. Oh and of course the biggest sjw culprit of them all. Cora's haircut. It's fucking hair you nimrods get over it, it is not a conspiracy against you. Also no MEA is not an sjw lgbtq dating simulator. In MEA I spend most of what is another 100 hour game driving around the nomad shooting alien crap and getting resources for the initiative. Not a dating simulator lbgtq or otherwise. I can't even pretend to respect these dummies most of them have probably never been outside of whatever one streetlight and stop sign town they live in and they live in a warped reality of delusional paranoia where every thing is out to get them. Every time I see one of them claiming a bioware game is sjw propoganda I am going to call them out on their bullshit and I won't be nice about it. The only real complaint they have that has any validity would be about Manveer Heir and he doesn't even work for bioware any more. I am done with these idiots. Sorry I know I quoted you but my post which turned into another rant is not even directed toward you.

I remember Priestly threatened me with a permaban back in 2013 during the height of the ME 3 ending wars if I didn't tone it down. I guess it is good that they shut down the old bsn I can only imagine the carnage that would be taking place there right now.

I bet I could really, uh, light a fire under this thread with my thoughts on Manveer Heir's tweets. But I think I'll just keep that to myself, forever.

Stanley! Yes! He got on to me once as well. Didn't ban me but sent me a PM telling me to tone it down. Man, that dude didn't get the credit he deserved for trying to wrangle that herd of cats that was the OG BSN. I remember Priestly threatened me with a permaban back in 2013 during the height of the ME 3 ending wars if I didn't tone it down. I guess it is good that they shut down the old bsn I can only imagine the carnage that would be taking place there right now. I think Chris Priestly had the best of intentions but he should have never been a community manager. He doesn't have the temperament for it. I suspect it's why CDPR released him as the North America community manager as well. As for the old BSN, well, it had turned into a steaming pile of crap. Killing it was a wise move on BW's part because, honestly, it would be so much worse now. Andromeda and Anthem? Good gods, it would be just awful.

Yep the damage was done to that place long before it shut down. The changes they made back in 2014 (I think it was 2014). Only delayed the inevitable.
