When new gamers type the words 'Mass Effect Andromeda' into the likes of youtube looking for more information the (non sponsored) top hits are the going to send them running for the hills. It sucks given their efforts to put it right but that's what you get for knowingly releasing it in that state.

I dunno, DAI had more hype, looked amazing, and was basically a new generation launch game. That sold it. MEA's marketing just sucked. Agreed on the marketing for Andromeda. I haven't played DA:I but truth be told I thought it look like everything was smeared with vaseline. The "smeared with vaseline" look was a problem for me as well and was noticeable in Andromeda too on the paler characters. And I think it is because of the art work that both teams use and how it translates with the Frostbite engine. I think both games would benefit more by going with a better realistic look like what Anthem has than by staying with the soft shiny look that they have now.

Maybe EA could get a third party to put together a re-mastered 4k Mass Effect collection bundle (including Andromeda) for 60 bucks in time for the holidays for XBO:X and PS4 Pro.
That would be a great relatively cheap way of sweeping the old controversies under the carpet, attracting new and old customers and getting Andromeda into the hands of as many people as possible.

Back on the old BSN AutumnWitch started a thread talking about how Bioware could easily market to women, because many of us had been unaware that we could choose to play as a female protagonist in Bioware games and so hadn't picked them up until years after release. Allan Schumacher was kind enough to listen and the Female Inquisitor got added to the description of DAI on Amazon. (A mention that Shepard's gender could be customized was also added to the listing of ME2.) While I can't claim a cause and effect relationship, DAI subsequently outperformed other western RPGs with women (48% of DAI players were female vs. the average of 26%) and was Bioware's most successful launch. I never understood this. You'd literally have to always do a Quick Start of the games to not know you could play as a female. So literally everyone who didn't know this NEVER bothered to customise a character to begin with, so I really don't think these people would even care.

Having a customisable female Shep was the reason I first picked up ME1. I would likely have played it eventually anyway but it is the reason I got it at release. At the time it was a missing feature that I really wanted.
That said, I feel like the MEA marketing was pretty clear that both Sara and Scott existed. I don't think many people would have missed that.

No. DAI had TONS and tons of flak at launch, and long after. Everyone just neglects saying this to make their 'MEA sucks' point. That said, It was a good game though Not in the magazine reviews. 85 on average. Well deserved, I would say. DAI was hands down the better game. Storywise, companionwise and in the love for detail being displayed.

Anthem has showcased being able to play as both genders an to be brutally honest BioWare prob realised themselves only a change in direction would draw in new blood in sufficient numbers hence Anthem.
Ppl on these boards might no like it but i can see DA4 being the last BioWare game using there current formula an tbh it about time they should've left it behind after ME3, the ME universe would've been better served with a ME game built like Destiny, for me a natural evolution after the successful ME3 MP.
All that matters is "Is it a good game"

Financially, Dragon Age Inquisition was a massive success, exceeding EA's earnings expectations, Andromeda's difficulties really have nothing to do with the Bioware formula. Anthem does seem to be shooting for the Destiny audience, but I think it's a mistake to think they are doing so because they want to abandon their old formula.

I think it's absolutely should be mentioned that you can play a customizable male or a female Ryder. TBH, if it sais Sara or Scott, it would be a turn off for me, as it implies a set protagonist. Obviously, I am BioWare's fan, so I know they are the only ones pretty much who let you customize your hero, but if someone's just browsing, I think it's important to make it crystal clear that you can play whatever Ryder you want.

I mean, I could tell you that in the old days it was a three-act story that started with go collect these four things. Then it became a different kind of three act story, and now it's just a bunch of stuff with some maps. The story is the weakest part of the game when it used to be the strongest. Which is interesting to me because they've pulled a bunch of their most well-known writers, like David Gaider, onto Anthem. I don't think it'll have a weak story, at least I hope not, I just think that the story and gameplay itself is something that I'm going to be uninterested in.

A lot of folks say DA4 will be much like DA3, and I feel that I am gonna pass, because one time playing DA3 is enough.

All that matters is "Is it a good game" No, that's not all that matters, since it has to be an interesting game. On an individual level. Multiplayer isn't interesting to me, so it can be the best multiplayer game ever created, and I wouldn't consider it a good game. Based on what I want from a game. Also it's win some lose some. If they, as you say, go all out multiplayer, they probably rake in a new audience, but they're certainly losing the old RPG crowd. If that approach is the winning ticket remains to be seen. Starting fall 2018, I would say.

Eh. If you ask me, I would say the BioWare should showcase all of the improvements that they have made and let us all know what exactly they will improve going forward.
That, and after the game is patched to perfection, tease and release DLC. That would not only bring back people who were jaded by ME:A's state at release, but also breath new life into the game as well.
Those kinda things ring as far more important to gamers than pandering to specific sexes.

It failed to generate hype and failed to stop the hate train. As a matter of fact, they worked with the hate train serving up the embargo and 10-hour trial. Lesson learned. I hope. And to think I once defended their marketing strategy, but in the end, it's just because they really had nothing amazing balls - mind blowing or working smoothly to show before the last weeks. Now I get it.

And to think I once defended their marketing strategy, but in the end, it's just because they really had nothing amazing balls - mind blowing or working smoothly to show before the last weeks. Now I get it. To be fair their marketing strategy would have worked out okay if they actually did have something mind blowing. The problem is that the follow through of the "don't talk about anything" way of doing things is to have a heavy ramp up just before release and generate maximum hype, then release the game with no time for the hype train to slow down(which is something that can happen if you announce it too early and don't have things to continually show off). Only they followed up "don't talk about anything" with "still don't talk about anything", and the game released to a lot of controversy over animation issues instead of any actual hype generated by marketing. and now anybody researching the game is going to come across the dozens of articles and videos talking about that controversy rather than any potential good points about the game.

I didn't think the characters in Andromeda, even the paler characters, looked like they had the whole "smeared with vaseline" issue, I think the issue there came down to weird facial features, for the humans (not as much for the asari), also all asari bar Peebee looked almost identical. It makes me wonder if some of the dudes from DICE should do the work on graphical stuff, facial features, etc. because the battlefield games look SPECTACULAR.

The example you brought up never bothered me, but I looked at it as a interesting advancement in transhumanism and not a cop out. See how two people can view the same piece of writing completely differently? It's a truly interesting phenomenon, and a pretty concrete reason as to why story patches could potentially do more harm than good, imo.

Well, I think SAM should still play a role, just have him not play AS LARGE of a role. I feel this way it could allow the sibling to do a lot more. But yeah, I see how that would piss off some people. BTW, your profile pic....
