Considering the fact that lots of gamers are absolute losers irl, is any of this really all that surprising? Maybe you should stop being a loser then? Thats a bleak view of things if that's what is really believed. Lolwut? "Maybe you should stop being a loser then?"I wasn't aware I was... news to me. All you really have to do is look at how gamers act to see it. I'm not calling all gamers losers as I would most certain consider myself to be one, but you cannot deny that there is a cabal of sad people out there that makes the rest of us look bad.

Gaming isn't a private club. Anyone and everyone can join and no one has any say in who is in or out. I'm just accepting the cold hard truth that acts as a sort of underbelly to any and all nerd culture.

Maybe anyone who is a gamer needs to break away from that. As a sub-culture it can be so much more, academically, socially and otherwise, instead of sticking in the morass of inferiority complexes that are considered the norm.

*raises hand* I can't decide if we've gotten worse, or if gamers have always sucked and it's just easier to organize the awfulness now. Honestly...I think its the latter. The problem is it stems from the vocal minority dominating conversation, a warped version of the pareto principle effectively showcasing what nerd subculture is and how disingenuous it gets. Reminds me of this video parodying a gamer, recording himself on youtube at a midnight release and whining about some random popular game...Metal Gear Solid I think it was I dont remember. Basically its the caricature you expect- he threatens to burn the first copy of the game bought in the store on video to proclaim his hatred for the series, and curses out anyone defending it. That caricature is slowly turning into reality. That makes me just shake my head at how fragile the subculture is. I try very hard to keep away from major video game sites now of days just because of how rotten the whole gamer culture has gotten and I avoid things like the youtube comments like the plague. I go to one or two but I limit my engagement with their communities because of how toxic gaming culture is, this is probably the gaming site I frequent the most and I still have to limit it. I stopped calling myself and other people as "gamers" because I can't stand the toxicity that term as become to me so I call my self and others "players". When I do call some that is usually as a hardcore gamer troll because that is what that term means to me now of days because of toxicity that I have come to associate with that term. Also I never gamer a game in my life, I don't know how to gamer a game. I've played games all my life.

My definition of a fan is pretty much "Person who shows an interest in and engages with [thing] consistently." Like I'd consider myself a fan cuz I buy their games and am on a forum devoted to their games but I don't buy any extraneous merchandise, write fanfiction, go to conventions, get tattoos etc. The same. I consider myself a fan of Dragon Ball but I've never bought a piece of merchandise, wrote fanfiction or done any of the other things you've mentioned. I don't even watch every arc dedicatedly since there are some arcs like the Black Goku arc that I just don't have an interest in so I just skip those. I do frequent the Dragon Ball Reddit as a lurker and I catch the live at 2 am (Universal Survival Tournament, fuck yeah!) even though I can only understand the gist of what the characters are saying.

There is a segment of the gaming community that is becoming a cancer to the gaming industry (as well as society in general) as a whole. If I was a developer and I got a career opportunity in something else I would probably say "screw it" and get out of game development if I had a chance to do something else rather than pour my heart and soul into something only to have it crapped on by ingrate sociopaths who think developers owe them something because they shelled out sixty bucks on a video game. You know Gamergate started because of people with your opinion. I even imagine you "nodding respectfully" while writing that stuff. Gamergate is a collection of a mob of morons that think gaming is their own private compound (no I am not an anita fan either).Look how that ended up though. Gawker went into the gutter and the gaming industry had a really nice wake up call, that you shouldn't bite the hand that feeds you. Hulk Hogan brought down Gawker, angry little gamers had nothing to do with it. When all is said and done, if Bioware or EA somehow feel offended by us, they are welcome to step forward and tell us how awful we are, but I'm guessing they aren't really curious to find out what will happen if they did that... They already lost most of you sociopaths to CDPR. I kind of feel bad for CDPR because when you turn on them as well it will be nasty.

Why is a sociologist PhD student at a shitty school allowed to have a platform? Why shouldn't she have a 'platform'? If I pull up an article from a research group at east west central southern state university in a journal titled "Science for people who maybe don't clean their butts too well," do you think I should rely on that article for my work? (I know it's an ad hominem, but come on.)

It's kind of the point of science that anyone can do it. Appeals to authority are a straight-up logical fallacy, and that covers judging a study by the school the researcher works at.

But there's also a reason Harvard publishes more in JACS and JOC than some 3rd rate junky journal with less impact factor. I doubt anyone has ever done any actual studies on how reliable certain tiers of journals are, but in my practical experience, there are definitely journals and lab groups that I don't trust because I have seen their stuff not work.

Me too but I throw money at related stuff. I want a BioWare Austin T-shirt so I can show off my fandom. I'm not on Twitter or even Facebook so I'm like you. Google a search and see what's current. However, if I read another article citing only Kotaku... So help me...

Stuff like this bothers me. Its dismissive of the more constructive versions of criticism of the game, and instead focuses on the pissbabies.
I've never been more excited for a game, and then more disappointed with the product. I even contacted a friend and freelance wrote an article for a site about my experience and where I felt it felt short. Funnily enough, the comments on the article on reaction it got was pissbabies saying "YEAH FUCK THAT SHIT" and apologists saying "cismale asshole" because I don't think people bothered to read past the headline or pay attention and into how the criticisms were articulated.
To be honest, I still haven't seen one of these post mortems actually tackle the things I would consider the real problems with the game and instead just go on about "gamers are bad" and blame the audience. Sure the audience didn't help, but it would have been a lot harder for the criticisms to have validity without a number of business, marketing and dev mistakes along the way.
