Got struck by a nostalgia spell last night and decided I needed to watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is one of my all-time favorite movies but which I haven't watched in probably 10 years.
And in the recommendations I see that they made an adaptation of the Rum Diary- the original Hunter S. Thompson novel also being a longtime favorite of mine- which I somehow didn't notice when it was released, back in 2011 (must have been when I was living without internet or cable TV).
And... it was pretty disappointing. Maybe it was just a harder book to adapt, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as Fear and Loathing (even with Johnny Depp reprising his role as the Hunter S Thompson self-insert character). Not bad, but not very good either.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Worth viewing for Alan Rickman's performance alone, he steals this movie. Over the top performance (in a good way) but the film's an old fashioned swashbuckling theatrical romp anyway so it's not out of place. Get the villain right in any story/production and you're on to a good thing.

Yeah by those who completely miss the point, it's not meant to be Shakespeare or a critical masterpiece. It's a light entertaining family movie (which it does very well) nothing more nothing less, the old hero v diabolical villain adventure tale harking back to the old Hollywood "Matinee" films of yesteryear.

Watched two movies the last two nights, both of which dealt with time (and the manipulation of).
First was Old (2021)
It might be the most M. Night Shyamalan thing I've ever seen. It was...sort of enjoyable, and really interesting. Worth a watch but I feel like the actors were given their scripts on pieces of wood and told to take inspiration.
Then was About Time (2013)
Cute time travel romantic comedy with some drama. Basically two hours of asking the question, 'just because we can change something...should we?' and answering with 'just enjoy life'. By far the more enjoyable of the two.

Just got home from The Batman.
Man, it was good. Saw reviews that said “best Batman film since the Dark Knight “
I’m thinking it might even be better. Long, but didn’t feel it. No wasted scenes, everything moved the plot forward. Absolutely loved it.

I'm surprised The Batman was good. From what I've seen I wasn't really digging it. Not too, "whiny emo batman"?

From what I've seen I wasn't really digging it. Not too, "whiny emo batman"? I didn't like any of the trailers, either. Bruce Wayne wears eye make-up in much the same way as Oliver Queen wore it in Arrow (if you watched that). The 'emo' criticisms were valid from the trailers, but the trailers weren't telling the full story. Wayne has definitely got some damage - and there is closure for it to a degree - and has largely been a recluse since returning to Gotham, but there is no 'poor, individual me' in the script or the portrayal. He is all about righting a wrong, but not one done to him.

I watched "The Green Knight" the other day. Pretty weird movie, I have to say. Not precicely bad but very weird. Also, After seeing so many tv shows last year, which were adapted from books but toool A LOT of liberties with the material (e.g. Wheel of Time and Foundation), it's good to see that it happens to movies, too. I read an interview with David Lowery afterwords where he elaborated on some of the changes he made and, well, some of them are ... weird ... and a bit pretentious to be honest. It seems like he tried to put a very self indulgant spin on the tale but thereby completely disregarded some of the main points the original tried to make. I don't know. IMO, if you are giving your movie the same title, setting and character names as the poem, then stick to it please. If you do want to tell a different tale that involves more of what you want to talk about yourself and is more inspired by the original than being a real adaptation, I think it would be more respectful to also change some of the names (the title at the very least), so that this is clear to the audience ahead of time. But whatever, it was still a rather good movie IMO, it's just yet another one of those weird rather self-indulgent adaptations. They start getting to me.

Just finished watching this. My kids wanted to, but my expectations were through the floor. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Reasonable VFX, a serviceable time travel father/son story and Ryan Reynolds might be one of the most watchable people on the planet. He’s still Deadpool in everything, but I liked Deadpool, so that’s ok.

Reasonable VFX, a serviceable time travel father/son story and Ryan Reynolds might be one of the most watchable people on the planet. He’s still Deadpool in everything, but I liked Deadpool, so that’s ok. Probably watch it tonight. I'd never heard of it before. Took a glance at the cover, then did a double-take when I saw Reynolds. Then did a triple take when I recognized a bunch of em. Had to give it a shot after that.
***
Finally watched the latest Spiderman last night. Kept intending to go the theatres to see it but that never materialized. I'm kind of glad I didn't. While there were great scenes to see on the big screen I spent a bunch of time rewinding parts.
Fuck me that was a good movie.
So much to break down.
I'm surprised I managed to make it this far without Aunt May getting spoiled. Garfield/Maguire was, that just was all over the place.
When the glider hit her it looked pretty damn serious. My first thought was, "well she's not a superhero." Then she says the line and yup, fuck. I think it's pretty damn interesting that they had her in all three movies and his "uncle ben" moment was at the end. From a writing/directorial viewpoint that's a cool choice. Different spin on an iconic moment.
I am bored of Green Goblin though. I liked the Hobgoblin finally showing up, but I am sick of that villain. Never was a huge fan in the first place and now we have two decades of the same bad-guy. I'm glad it's done, and over.
Garfield/Maguire actually getting a "soft conclusion" of sorts to their arcs from their previous movies was amazing. Loved that Garfield got to save MJ. Also loved his acting. There were a lot of shots I rewound of him because he's not center-screen but he's making faces and it's hilarious. Toby smiling when Osbourne was finally cured was damn touching. "youth pastor" lol. I think they did a respectful job with the characters.
Electro feeling the difference in energy in 616 was an intriguing little side-note. I really like the idea of that verse just having more latent energy around as a whole. It's a small step forward in terms of suspending my disbelief. Nothing huge, just a nice tidbit.
Strange seemed a bit out of character. He pushed things forward a bit too much, and too incautiously. I get that it's somewhat within his characterization, but it still stretched that for me. Regardless I liked his portrayal as usual.
The continual "breaking" of his spell(s) was interesting to see too. Like, this MoM didn't just happen all at once. It seems like a bit of a compound effect. Which I appreciate, even if that portion felt a tad out of character. Strange and Spidey fighting was good times too. Always love mirror dimension antics.
Fun to see Wong, however brief. Very disconcerting the way he goes, "leave me out of this." Well done acting on his part. Side of Wong we haven't seen.
I had forgotten that Venom was supposed to show up. Got a laugh when he finally did. Sad it was so brief but oh well.
Pretty brutal ending to the trilogy. Poor guy. May dead and you got no one. Them not having their memories just so they can get into MIT, I dunno. Assuming they don't get to remember anything connected to him, not a big silver lining. Not compared to remembering the crazy shit they did and helped with. Imagine getting to use a slingring and open portals? All in all the ending was a lot more tragic than expected. Not complaining, I loved the movie, but definitely not how I'd thought it'd end going off of the first two.
Very good movie, felt way longer than 2 hrs, which makes sense cause I rewound a bunch. Seriously though, lots to unpack even in a single scene. Particularly in seeing how Toby and Andrew react to things.

He’s still Deadpool in everything, but I liked Deadpool, so that’s ok. Finally watched it late last night. Was pretty good. Got a few laughs. A good portion of the humour was based on the things you'd love to say and do to your younger self which I got a kick out of. Especially imagining a mouthy Reynolds growing up.
I thought the kid did a good job of mimicking Ryan too.
Zoe Saldana isn't my favourite, she overacts a lot but she wasn't too bad. (Not a huge amount of screen-time tbf.)
The Hulk professor whose name I never ever remember did a good job.
Unfortunately the villains kind of under-performed, but you can't have everything.

Yeah - the villain lady was a particular disappointment, I thought. I didn't even recognise Catherine Keener, and I usually really like her in films.

Went to see Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Worth the long wait for me, the movie had been postponed due to Covid. Really dark but also some great laughs. The 'beasts' play a tinier part in this movie but they were the ones who took care of the lighter stuff in the story.

Looks good.
Minor concerns that Dr Fate's powers will 'look and feel' the same (or at least, very similar) to Dr Strange - the one shot of him doing something looked a lot like the MCU's mirror dimension...but I guess that is probably unavoidable. As long as spells aren't formed by sparkling orange circles and lines, most people are unlikely to care too much.

Just watched I Care a Lot on Netflix, and that's a wasted 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.
I mean, how do you manage to make a bad movie starring Peter Dinklage and Rosamund Pike? Even after an engaging opening 15-20 minutes of the movie? They somehow managed to do so here, with this going completely off the rails about halfway through. And since the main character is explicitly supposed to be a terrible person who steals from the elderly, you don't even care enough to stick around and find out what happens to her in the end. Yikes.
One of the worst movies I've seen in a long, long time. Didn't even watch the last 20 minutes or so, because I simply couldn't get myself to care.
