Yeah, this argument is starting to read as "I want a Safe Space for my hot girl fantasies and all these other preferences are getting in the way." Well, technically, the OP's position is that a lot of male gamers want a safe space, etc., and Bio should give them one because.... it kind of wobbles a bit, but I think the original argument was business necessity. I understood it as a more broad humanitarian cause from the OP.

This thread is ridiculous, why does anyone even care whether characters are ugly or hot. Their games are going to be good or bad based on how sexually appealing a computer animation is? I don't get why people are looking for things that are better found on Pornhub Exactly. This is why you only see attractive people in porno's and not in full featured Hollywood movies.

Not all porn has conventionally attractive actors. At least not on the male side of things. Especially in non-vanilla porn.

Please, stop saying "a lot of guys" and just refer to yourself. I, and most other male players, are fine with the characters BioWare creates. I don't need digital "hot babez" to jerk my dick off to as I play. Media corporations don't think in terms of individuals. They see only averages, cohorts, demographics, target audiences. They need to target large groups. That's why I'm trying to get above personal desires. ... except that the particular large group you want them to target is the supposedly AVERAGE straight male who are more likely to buy a videogame if it meets their personal standards for feminine beauty. Marketing organizations usually look for underserved markets to expand their customer base, and it looks to me like that's what BioWare is doing. Also, because this: I would also think that if "hot babez" is a concern for someone, that doesn't necessarily make for a deal-breaker on the sale.
For example, I like eye candy just as much as anyone, and I found a lot of the people in ME:A, male and female both, to be pretty fucking scary looking. It's not a deal-breaker for me because I care more about shooting things in the face. A lot more.
There's also the fact that (I think) a lot of us have grown tired of the same old same old. Every female everywhere you look in media looks a lot like a Barbie - they just change the hairstyle and color and put them in different outfits. BioWare is heavily focused on characterization, and wants their characters to be distinctive.

Isabela looks ridiculous, clothing wise, so Cassandra and Sera are, you know, at the very least wearing pants. In her defense, shes a slutty pirate, it kinda comes with the job description Imo, no character should be created with the purpose of being attractive... there are so many examples of characters everywhere who are just meant to be love interests to the protagonist and have no character at all, and the reason behind that is because the people basically went "ok, we need a love interest, thoughts?" and thats exactly the problem But also, the moment you start to say "ok, shes a soldier, but shell have perfect hair and/or makeup...", the moment you start to lose character. Because ultimately it wont matter what the character wants, or what theyd need, or what theyd have, what actually matters in that case is what the people wanting to romance her would want, or more... the people who would sacrifice her character for good looks. No writer worth anything would sacrifice a characters personality and like... what the character would have and do for making them more attractive against all sense and logic. If theres a good character who happens to be attractive, great! Morrigan is a good example of where both can work together, shes an amazing character AND shes hawt, but she isnt there just to be attractive... although the argument can be made that her point of being there is to have sex with either Alastair or the HoF, but thats a plot point rather than sacrificing her character traits or objectifying her, and she has lots of good character arcs throughout the dragon age series based on that No good character is, in a sense, a romance option. Theyre characters who you happen to be able to romance. Theyre not there to please people, theyre there to be themselves, if you happen to like a character THEN the romance is there for you, but characters arent REALLY there to fulfil anyones idea of beauty imo

I remember the old romance forum. It may not have been this kind of problem, but it sure as hell was a problem nonetheless, hence its shutdown. I'd argue the OT fandom had the worst reactions to things. These edgeless kids ain't shite.

It's not even beating a dead horse, it's digging up the dry carcass and tearing out some fleshy strings. Most reviewers know this game is garbage and most people are indifferent to it. It's time to move on for those of us who know better. It took me a while to figure out these subforums are a kind of therapy support group for delusional people that can't let go. It's morbidly fun to watch but it's still mean to invade their safe space. Oh that's comedy gold right there.

Exactly. This is why you only see attractive people in porno's and not in full featured Hollywood movies. Is there a universe in which Ron Jeremy is considered attractive? Well, this is the internet. If you look hard enough I'm sure you could find whole groups of people that find things far worse than Ron Jeremy attractive.

My question is whether it will work. I know 50% of gamers are women, but the kinds of games men and women enjoy differ quite a bit. Are there enough AAA gaming women to replace the men Bioware will lose by not including GTA/W3 levels of conventional sexy? I think the next Bioware release will answer that question.

I wonder numbers they are looking at, where they get their statistics.

Yeah, "gamer" and "gamer with the hardware to run AAA titles" are different demos.
I can't remember; does Steam collect demographic information? Presumably this could be correlated with the hardware survey.

I wonder numbers they are looking at, where they get their statistics. Even if we grant your argument -- you still haven't really moved the ball on this one, and I don't think you can -- that doesn't get us to "gamble." More likely, it gets us to "mistake," as in "Bio badly overestimated the maturity and taste of their fanbase." That might have to read "EA overestimated," since it looks like market research operates out of EA proper rather than the individual development groups. However, that part of the dev process is even more murky than the rest of it.
