I would say the face models in MEA aren't nearly as bad as the ones from DAI, but they are still pretty bad. I suppose in the end it is entirely BW's prerogative if they want their game filled with a bunch of (guess I'll be nice here) less than attractive characters. I'll just adjust my expectations and buying decisions better in the future. Do you (or anyone, for that matter) seriously base game-buying decisions on how attractive the characters are?

Yeah, that's the substantive question here.
I dunno. Maybe some of us do.

The whole "omgz teh wimmens is uggo n' teh doodz r 2 hawt" argument always seemed to emerge after backlash against other issues with the game. If a game's launch leaves much to be desired (happened in SWTOR bigtime)people will dogpile on anything to complain about to the point of seeming mental illness over it. I don't see why this is an issue when you can totally customize how attractive your character is or isn't to you. But even in light of that some people are flipping out over one-line NPC's and their physical appearances too. To sum up, I bet there would be no tear-soaked neckbeard rage over, say, Cora's average appearance if there wasn't rage over other issues at launch.

For a second, just for a second, bear with me and consider that Bioware did not design Sara, Sera, Cassandra, and Josephine to hurt male gamers' sensibilities, but instead because that was the way they envisioned the characters.
I know, it's a wild idea, but just try.
Miranda and Isabela and even Morrigan are designed to be conventionally attractive because that is part of their character. Josephine is designed to look like a princess-archetype because that is part of her romance arc. Video games are a visual medium, it's necessary to convey part of the character in their looks. Jack being barely clothed but covered in tattoos signifies that she is externally open but she's hiding something underneath it all. Every inch of Sera's character design shows that she's self-sufficient, lived a somewhat hard life, and has no regard for Thedosian standards of beauty. Cassandra's look is utility with feminine flairs, showing that she's a warrior with a sensitive side.
They are not designed the way they are to show dudebros how wrong they are for finding supermodels hot. They're designed that way to tell something in visual shorthand about the character themselves. Boom, they are all conventionally attractive and boom, we've lost something about their characters along the way. Don't compare it to the Witcher; AFAIK, and I could be wrong, the Witcher had to take care of a cast of around seven from game to game, many who were recurring. They didn't have to develop up to ten characters at once.

If this truly troubles you -then all the more reason to get the PC version. Sometimes mods come out that make such options available. Be it an actual romance mod or a mod that changes appearance -that are then combined together. It happened for DAI and it is beginning to happen with ME:A -the latter type of mod being first there though. ... Or you can just be like me and not care one way or another: #Viva La AsexualityTrust me.. if there was a mod that could fix Sera's appearance, I would have used it a looooong time ago. She is the least attractive character to ever grace a BioWare game... and that include Oghren and Wrex. Hey, now! I don't think Sera would mind the comparison to Oghren, but you go too far comparing her to the corpse of a dead krogan.

Like I said before it is BW's prerogative to envision all their female characters to be ugly if they want. Just realize that it is going to lead to discussions from people wondering wtf is going on. It does make me wonder why they don't envision all their male characters to be ugly as well though? Apparently in BW's fantasies only the men get to be sexually attractive. But again, its their game. I suppose they can do what they want with it. Can't really blame folks for finding that little inconsistency in their "vision" odd though.

Iron Bull, Varric, Solas, Joker, Reyes, Liam, Oghren those guys aren't particularly attractive...oh, do you find them attractive? I don't. Well, what do you know, maybe it's because beauty is subjective.Josephine, Jack, Ashley, Cassandra, Suvi, those girls are gorgeous...oh, do you not find them attractive? I do. Well, what do you know, maybe it's because beauty is subjective.Look, there's two different opinions right there. Which of us is Bioware supposed to appeal to? If you keep saying all these female characters are ugly, then you are going to keep being wrong, because only some people are going to agree with you as evidenced by this very thread. I don't have to 'just realize' anything.

You know i just realized... We NEVER have this conversation about men in Bioware games. It isn't because they're super-hunks, either - because they most assuredly aren't. The only male character in all of ME that I think is hunkworthy is Kaidan. Look at all of the other prominent male characters - Anderson, Hackett, Bailey, Joker, all of the male squaddies and crew members - there's not a looker in the lot of them aside from Kaidan. They're all just average looking fellas (though if they were women, they'd be called fugly). But you're right - nobody complains about male looks. It's only the females who are heavily scrutinized and raked over the coals repeatedly. There must be a conspiracy here somewhere.

... Well, what do you know, maybe it's because beauty is subjective..... If you keep saying all these female characters are ugly, then you are going to keep being wrong... So just...deliberately misunderstand my post? Okay. We all get that opinions are opinions. I'm down with you thinking that all Bioware female characters are ugly. I disagree, but whatever. Your argument is based on the fact that opinions are facts and a majority of male gamers are irritated that all these female Bioware characters are ugly and it's going to cause them to buy less Bioware games. I mean, yeah, it's created discussion, but I can't imagine it makes a difference among the larger buying public, most of whom don't venture onto the internet to complain about their female squadmates not being up to their bangable standards. Arguing this stance is valid on a personal level, preferences are preferences, but probably not the vast majority of male gamers, which is what the original post, and my response that you quoted, was about.

If I am wrong in my opinion then beauty can't be subjective. We all get that opinions are opinions. And where did I say "a majority of male gamers are irritated that all these female Bioware characters are ugly"? That actually seems to be the argument from the side complaining about "straight male privilege" since the "oppressive majority" needs to be fought against. Right? If its not "a majority of male gamers are irritated that all these female Bioware characters are ugly" then why is the argument even being made? I would dare say that enough gamers (straight male or otherwise) are irritated to make this an issue of discussion that has persisted for months even after the game has released. Whether it is a "majority" or not I wouldn't be able say.

Problem is i don't think it's justified. Some of the critiques come across as creepy and entitled rather than concerned about biowares views about beauty.

Of all of the rants about the appearance of various female characters I've read - and they are legion - I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't sound creepy and entitled. JMHO.

Whether it is a "majority" or not I wouldn't be able say. It was in a response to your supposition that Bioware is intentionally making ugly girls, and implying that it's for some SJW reason. My full quote in reply to this supposition: If you keep saying all these female characters are ugly, then you are going to keep being wrong, because only some people are going to agree with you as evidenced by this very thread.Where did I bring up straight male privilege or an oppressive majority? It's honestly kind of insulting to straight males to think that all they would want is 'hot' girls, or that they would be so insulted by the lack of hot girls that it would make them not buy a game. It's their money, but Lord that's a kind of shallow that looks unattractive on anyone IMO. As for my part you quoted there, it was admittedly aimed at other posts in the thread and I apologize. Also, it's the argument put forth by the OP, which is why it's being argued, unless I'm getting really confused by what you meant there.

It's obvious the facial appearances are more dull than previous games. The other species are very bland looking. Some of the human females look like Neanderthals that crawled out of a cave, frizzy hair and all, lol.
