OMG I don't know if I find people ranting in the comments ignoring that Kesh is a female and blaming "SJWs" and "political correctness" hilarious or disturbing. BTW, Kesh is, to me, one of the only good characters on the Nexus. Calling Tann "Eight" to remind him he was 8th in line to keep him humble is great. If they're still ignoring that Kesh is a woman they're probably blaming SJWs for the fact that krogan women aren't sexualised and prettier than the men like what happens with WoW races oh lord. Last thing I'd want is ME WoW style.

Yeah, it's something a lot of people had been asking about for quite awhile. We didn't see any female krogan, salarians, or turians until ME3 - and the turians were in DLC! The first 2 are understandable due to their social structure at the time, but there should have been female turians on the Citadel, in merc bands, as CSEC officers, etc. all along. Well, I am wondering how much those social structures are a result of the budgetary constraints and how much - of the free-flowing inspiration. For example, if they were creating Asari just now, would not they have inserted a small lore twist that made facial features uniformity a feature rather than an irritant.... I don't think the lore is completely independent of "what do we have money for, boss? What can we build, engineers?" It is always limitations and budget cuts, that is exactly the reason for some of the choices of aliens, genders, designs and even lore written.

On how censorship claims usually fail: I dunno... two weeks ago I learned that the city where I work (Frankfurt) has passed some kind of law that forbids the use of overly sexual ads in public places like bus stops. They've gone to court against several companies. I'm conflicted about this. On the one hand I DO see almost pornographic ads as a bad influence on teenage girls. But I'm not sure I support outright banning everything. It's a form of art cencorship. Even if it's shitty commercial art.
Another example from Germany: A vegan woman got a folk song banned from being played as chimes because it promotes violence against animals. It's just an old song about farmers shooting foxes that kill their chickens! This is cultural heritage. Everybody knows the song. But this woman made a fuss online so the city decided it's best to not play it anymore. WTF?!
There is something seriously wrong with people's sensitivities these days. But now they go online and cause trouble for everyone just because they can. Because it's some kind of fucked up power trip. They can get men in trouble easily these days throwing around accusations of sexual harassment and rape. And I'm saying this as a woman and not a scared paranoid man.
So people like Anita are not exactly harmless. They do influence people. Didn't they change or want to change Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad because its not ok anymore to show weak abused women because it's a bad example? That's ridiculous!
On Tumblr people asked to boycot and tried to shame M. Night Shyamalan for his film Split. Because his depiction of multiple personality disorder is evil... Never mind that it's a stupid horror movie nobody else takes seriously. But these people wrote virtual death threats.
It's not really funny anymore to me what's going on. It definitely wasn't like this ten years ago or even five. This isn't going to ruin our favorite escapism forever but it's not helping either.

One thing that perplexed me about some of the videos criticizing ME:A was how people were claiming that SJW's ruined the game. I'm not focusing on other criticisms, like facial animations or the story, which I felt was good sometimes and uninspired at other times, but more, I want to focus on what is causing people to claim that SJW's had influenced the game in a negative way. What were some instances in the game or the game' s development that could be considered "SJW-like", and what were some other instances suggest otherwise. This way we can avoid cherry picking. Final note: Let's all try to be civil about things, if I or anyone else happens to be sounding uncivil, feel perfectly free to call me/them out. The claims are that SJWs ruined the game because they 'forced the developers to make the women ugly' (most of the men in the game were pretty ugly as well, case in point that guy (Ben?) who Vetra talks to in the Citadel docks before you board the Normandy for the first time), because Cora had an 'SJW' hairstyle (it looked more like a 'can I talk to the manager hairstyle from one side IMO) and there were no straight female LIs with long hair and because they forced the devs to include gay male romances. Oh and one of the dumbest was some dude whining on Facebook recently about there being gay krogan in the game, when I asked him for proof he linked to a twitter post complaining about gay krogan which had this video as 'proof' of gay krogan being in the game - Yeah, because a krogan having a lower pitched voice means she's a gay male Edit - Cora's hair also reminds me of this - imgur.com/GFSmUALInterestingly, I kind of 'get' that someone might think Kesh is a gay krogan because when I first heard kesh's voice I thought it was a male with a very strange higher pitch voice - effeminate. Later I learned Kesh was a female. You have no idea how hard I laughed at that. The funniest thing here is that if someone thinks that or posts it, you know they never played the game. Even funnier is that if someone is bitching about kesh being gay (not realizing kesh is female) they just committed the anita sarkeesian error by not actually playing the game they are condemning. So ironic and wildly hypocritical. And amusing of course. Gotta love people in all their shapes, sizes and craziness.

I don't know....there seems to be quite a bit of open bigotry in Dragon Age. Just look at how Elves and Qunari -and their respective beliefs- are treated. I agree with you on the rest though. Yeah but that's fantasy bigotry, which is quite different, like when Mordin casually scoffs at the thought of a krogan scientist, even when there's the product of a krogan scientist just a deck below. True...this isn't real World bigotry. But Mass Effect and Dragon age aren't based in our World. My point was, Bioware -or at least David Gaider- did a damned fine job of portraying such things in the Dragon age books and games. To say bigotry doesn't exist -fantasy or no- in Bioware games, would be a lie.

Wondering if this thread will make it as long as yours did? Wait...I had a thread? I didn't make a thread did I? Unless I was drinking, in which case I could totally see myself making a thread. Otherwise, this thread seems pretty civil so far. Yeah, I'm glad the mods didn't have to shut this one down, then again, you don't get people like pouf/fluffy coming on here calling people who criticized Andromeda or even hated it "Not true fans". Things would've gone to shit real quickly.

Easiest answer is the face of the female vs male Ryder. Add, the face of the doctor Lexi T'Perro to boot. Apparently, Asari diversity from ME1-3 disappeared and Bio went all clone with T'Perro's mediocre face. A harder answer is that I buy a game to enter a fantasy land. If I want to experience reality I walk the streets of any major western city.

Heh, there is a young attractive white guy cast as a main lead and he can sleep his way across the Galaxy, having access to 8/10 romance options, human, alien, boys and girls. He defeats the verse full of real evil mighty opponents with a tiny bit of help of his plain Jane sis (but you can make her hot too) and a magic sword he got from his mighty but dead daddy. Sucks to play a male in this game, yeah.... so very different than any other video game.

The internet is full of stupid. Just read a youtube comments section or read meta critic user "reviews" for proof of that. These asshats have never been able to prove that MEA is an "sjw" conspiracy and the never will. In the end they will just do more delusional ranting.

"SJW's ruined the game," is nonsense. But it's a mistake to dismiss those jabbing the accusing finger of SJW and BLM as delusional. I'm not saying any argument they make has a shred of fact or logic behind it -- usually the opposite -- but all that passion and solidarity belies a very disturbing societal trend that we ignore it at our peril; that white and (male) might make right, that their worldview is the natural order of things, and that contradicting that natural order is doing evil.
Take the whole Cassandra is ugly meme. They claim that Cassandra was purposely made ugly to support some kind of crypto-SJW agenda, and that by doing so the natural order of things has been violated. They cast themselves in the light of the defenders of the natural order. They think they are the good guys! And they are very committed to that belief.
While not about the anti-SJW tribe specifically, this vid about #GamerGate builds a very useful framework for analyzing this and similar social trends -- which is to say, he rips apart their nutty ideas like an intellectual Terminator. And he makes this extremely relevant point:

That doesn't mean mistakes won't be made. I argued elsewhere that I think Bioware made serious mistakes that are indeed SJW related. Specifically, they neglected THE AVERAGE, not every, hetero male gamer. Their anti-lookism stance led them to create less than ideal female characters. This led many men to feel they were being lectured to: Bioware to the hetero male gamer: "Your desires are wrong. We will fix them for you."

I don't know if I'd blame the default Sara Ryder thing or the asari clone thing on SJW's; more, I'd blame the default Sara thing on incompetence with frostbite engine, the asari clone issue I'd attribute more to laziness.

I only think that Bioware's desire to be seen as progressive is bigger than their competence to integrate LBGT character to their games.

It's mostly rage, yeah. Andromeda has issues, but any perceived SJWisms are way, way down the list. Only thing that comes
There's no denying that Bioware has over the years had some topics in their games related to progressive politics, but it's always been background more than anything put on the forefront so it has never bothered me.
Plus, a lot of people like to say that they view games as art. Well artists have always produced their works through a particular lens, and sometimes with a message. Art is neither a democracy nor a documentary, it doesn't have to be neutral, doesn't have to please everyone, and sure doesn't have to refrain from any theme that may or may not be political lest some people get their panties in a twist because a game displayed an element that makes them rage. This applies to all ends of the political spectrum by the way, the ones who hate on Bioware are far from the only ones with this attitude.
If we shy away from games being anything but safe, consensual Transformers-esque mindless fun, well that may be entertaining for some but it's then hard to take any claim of artistic value seriously. You either view games as art and accept that not all art spreads a vision you like, or you don't.
Also it's funny to see some act as if Bioware ''became too PC''. This being the studio that tried to fit a lesbian alien into a Star Wars game before Tumblr even existed.

I only think that Bioware's desire to be seen as progressive is bigger than their competence to integrate LBGT character to their games. This was an issue that I had with both ME3 and ME:A. STEEEEEVE was a good example of this, I mean it felt like he was only in there because he's gay. Gil I thought was a bit better but the gay bit was hamfisted.

Nice to hear a thoughtful voice, unafraid to ask difficult but important questions. Well done. Gaming is changing, and I think most of us would agree it's for the better. We will fix them for you." Compared to how I feel about some anti-SJW's you don't seem so bad, tell me though, what mistakes are we talking about? Their anti-lookism stance led them to create less than ideal female characters. This led many men to feel they were being lectured to: Bioware to the hetero male gamer: "Your desires are wrong. We will fix them for you." Hence the rage.

So are you saying lookism is a good thing, out of curiosity?
