Awwww man! Looking at your spoilers, there is so much about the later books I don't remember. Been starting to go through the series again with the audio books (perfect to fall asleep to ) for about a year now but I am only up to the beginning of Shadow Rising so far. So I am super well informed about the early books but everything after that is still very blurry. As for favorite plot lines: I mean, Moiraine was always my favorite character in the book. From the very start she is just fantastic in everything she does and says. I found the Aes Sedai and their politicking the most interesting over all. I can't entirely recall how exactly it went but I do remember Egwene going through some really bad shit in the tower for a while until that whole storyline gets a very very satisfying conclusion. Other than that, I didn't have a particular favorite I think. The three boys all have their ups and downs as I remember, so all in all, they ended up on the same level.

Book Spoilers for WoT and Stormlight Archive Jasnah is certainly reminiscent of Moiraine. I'd forgotten Moiraine hooked up with Thom. ...Jasnah hooked up with Wit. Musicians.

Anyone else feel this way? Or maybe I'm missing something? Book Spoilers I took it as a bit of 'classic gender stereotyped reaction'. Lan does not consider his life to be a precious thing. His honour is. Conversely, Moiraine is all 'fuck that, the dead have no honour, either. You can live and be mad at me.' Coupled with the fact that she knew the impossible closeness that she'd shared with him for two decades was now shared with another, younger, more powerful woman...it sort of works for me (as in, I can work with it without it ruining the books), but it is mostly unsatisfying.

I get the gender stereotype aspect of preserving life vs. preserving honor (and RJ did love his gender stereotypes ), but even so, I can't imagine them having nothing to say to each other. Not in front of everyone, of course, but just in front of the poor reader. I hope the show, if it lasts long enough, gives us a better resolution.

My dude had some super strong military bro, trained physicist, Deep South religious fundamentalist energy. Assuming they go the same route...yeah, you'd hope. It might not work in a TV show, though. Rosamund Pike is thus far the face of the series. Even if they were properly adapting the story - which they clearly aren't - dropping the marquee star for three or four seasons would be a difficult sell to the studio execs...to say the least. Plus...it would make Kappa sad

Plus...it would make Kappa sad While I wouldn't mind Moiraine sticking around (see my post above, she was my favorite character), I think they definitely could do it. This would happen 4 or 5 seasons in. By that time, the show should have established itself one way or another. Also, I am fairly sure the more GoT they can go, the more they will and it doesn't get more GoT than surprisingly killing off one of the leads with no regard weather or not it's their most famous actor (ok, in that case it was Sean Bean, who just always dies anyway but it was also right of the bat in season 1;)). Additionally, they can then pull the old Gandalf move of bringing her back, so that's another reason to do it.
But in the end, these are all issues for the far far future. I mean, getting to season 5 or whenever that would happen would be a major victory for a show like this in the first place, no matter what they do with Moiraine then. EDIT: I mentioned this before but I REALLY hate these [ div ] [ /div ] tags, the forum software keeps throwing into the posts and that ALWAYS mess up the spoiler tags. Really hope no one read this stuff by accident before I got to edit the post and correct it.

Random WoT question(s): - Anyone here play the Wheel of Time MUD? My brother and I did back in the day. For someone obsessed with high end graphics, he got surprisingly into it.
- Let's say the show's popular enough that a WoT video game or several get made. What would you guys like to see? Fourteen year old Gwydden would have been all over a WoT RPG or strategy game.

I usually create the post in "Preview", then switch to BBCode and then back again before posting when I've inserted spoiler tags etc. It usually reveals any issues. You make a good point about GoTiness. The only flip side I'd offer is that this is more traditional fantasy than GoT ever was. But you're right that we're some distance away from this being an issue, however they decide to approach it.

Didn't play any WoT games in the past, no, but if it were popular enough; A Crusader Kings style strategy/management game where you pick a nation or... Kappa don't read... uh...one of the Towers to control. That might be cool. But, I'd rather have a TPP RPG. Preferably not one of the characters we know, but set after the final scene of the books. The fallout/power vacuum in the wake of Tarmon Gaidon would be fairly rich soil for storytelling, I would've thought. The hardest aspect would be channeling. "Spells" as we're used to them in games just wouldn't be doing the idea justice, I don't think. But who'd want to be a normie in this world???

1. No, never heard of it. But then, MUDs aren't my thing.
2. A remake of the old WoT game from 2001 would be sweet (see first page of this thread).
I could also imagine a Dragon Age style game with it's own story (that might intersect with the one from the books/tv show at times) and with either DA:I style areas or an open world like in the Witcher 3 (aka choose an area the game takes place in and just don't let the player leave in a similar way Geralt couldn't just ride out of the Velen/Novigrad region).
One major problem here would of course be this: If you can choose what character to play, I'd want to have the option to play an Aes Sedai or also something else (warder, borderman, maybe even rogue whitecloak, gleeman, etc.). The lore would kind of forbid proper balancing though. Also, as an Aes Sedai, i you'd need magic combat mechanics but Aes Sedai are not supposed to use the One Power as a weapon except against the Shadow or as a very last defensive resort. So just having it there as a game mechnic might cheapen the whole thing quite a bit.
So yea, the more I think about it, the less sure I get. Might be better, to go the Witcher style, have a predetermined character, where you just get to make some decisions throughout the story. Then, it would be suoer cool to play a male channeler, who slowly goes insane as the game progresses.

I used to start in BBCode, but with big posts I found it too hard to keep track of where the /quote and /spoiler tags should be.

I found it too hard to keep track of where the /quote and /spoiler tags should be. I've noticed that a bit. With Firefox if I middle-mouse click on 'Quote' it opens a new tab with the quoted reply.
For every quote I make I middle click and delete everything but the first/last [ quote]. (If there are a billion parts I'm quoting.)

Anyone here play the Wheel of Time MUD? My brother and I did back in the day. For someone obsessed with high end graphics, he got surprisingly into it. If it's what I'm thinking of, yes, I played in the mid-to-late 2000s. At the time, you had to pay money to be a channeler, but it looks like now it's completely free. It was a fun game, as long as you knew other people who were playing. I played with a bunch of people from Dragonmount. Let's say the show's popular enough that a WoT video game or several get made. What would you guys like to see? Fourteen year old Gwydden would have been all over a WoT RPG or strategy game. An RPG would be awesome, maybe playing an Aes Sedai searching for a false dragon, some time before the events of the books. Or even something like Telltale Games' Game of Thrones titles. But, I'd rather have a TPP RPG. Preferably not one of the characters we know, but set after the final scene of the books. The fallout/power vacuum in the wake of Tarmon Gaidon would be fairly rich soil for storytelling, I would've thought. This would also be awesome, too. Also, as an Aes Sedai, i you'd need magic combat mechanics but Aes Sedai are not supposed to use the One Power as a weapon except against the Shadow or as a very last defensive resort. So just having it there as a game mechnic might cheapen the whole thing quite a bit. I think it could work well, potentially. You have all these weaves/spells that you can learn as you level up, but most of them are not designed specifically to harm anyone as a weapon would. Instead, most weaves just manipulate the environment, and you have to use them creatively to slow down, trap, or drive away your foes. Only as a last resort can you use a battle weave, and maybe it costs you quite a bit of stamina to do so, so that you have to heal or rest for a long time before you can get into combat again. The rest of this post contains book spoilers! Keep out, Kappa! Rosamund Pike is thus far the face of the series. Even if they were properly adapting the story - which they clearly aren't - dropping the marquee star for three or four seasons would be a difficult sell to the studio execs...to say the least. Plus...it would make Kappa sad It would make me sad, too That's a good point about Pike being the face of the series. I think they are going to have to do the whole "protagonist loses his mentor and everything goes to shit for a while" thing, but since they are going to have to compress this story and cut tons of side content anyway, Moiraine needn't be gone for long. Maybe she "dies" near the end of one season, then part way through next season, we start getting scenes of what the Finns are putting her through. She could get rescued in the opening of the next season after that. She would only need to be truly absent from the show for a couple of episodes, but she'd spend a little more than a season away from Rand, giving Cadsuane and the other Aes Sedai plenty of time to undo all of Moiraine's progress with him

We’re going to have to rewatch the S2 finale, because all I remember is Donna getting scratched by…a falling power line…or something….? And my wife doesn’t even remember that.

I just watched episode 5 today. I felt it was the weakest episode so far. I spent about an hour typing out my thoughts but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) my iPad crashed and deleted it all. In short:
One month time skip: bad! A lot of the characters are rolling in to Tar Valon without enough character development.
Whitecloaks: bad! Too moustache twirly and naff.
No Elyas: bad! Cool character and supplies context for Perrin the Wolfbrother. Could also be a source of insight into Aes Sedai/Warder bond.
Capture of Logain: cool! An early introduction, but it worked for me. However…
Stepin: too much screen-time taken away from character development of main protagonists. Also…
Lan’s chest beating, shirt rending cries of anguish: made me chuckle! Call me a heartless SOB but Stepin wasn’t around long enough for me to care and Lan emoting this early on before his walls have been breached felt out of character.
Loial: good!
Thoughts: any?

Episode 6 thought dump below: I never had strong feelings about Siuan one way or the other, so the intro was fine. I don't remember her backstory either. The pronunciation of "Tar Valon" is getting to me. However, I wonder if they are pronouncing it that way to make it sound more like "Avalon"? Really leaning into the idea that our legends are rooted in the reality of this age, and vice versa? The meeting with all the Aes Sedai and Siuan seemed a bit too dramatic, although this is another thing I don't remember from the books. Didn't Siuan and Moiraine get some kind of private meeting where they were revealed to not be so antagonistic? Or am I confusing separate events? Moiraine pulling Shadar Logoth's taint out of Mat was badass, though. And on a girly note, I dig her eyeliner. And then we got a nice moment between Moiraine and Rand If he can be less antagonistic toward her in the show than he was in the books, that would be great. He doesn't need to trust her fully or do everything she says, just be less of an asshole. Please, Amazon? Make that happen. And then Nynaeve had to ruin the moment I love Moiraine's sass toward her in this episode. Ummmmm...wtf is that glowing doorway? That better not be a gateway. (Ok, I don't think it is. It's just a hidden passage.) Well, the pillowfriends scene answered my previous question Not sure what I think of this episode. It feels like a lot happened, but at the same time, it feels like nothing happened. I guess I expected to be blown away since Sanderson said this was one of his favorite episodes. I do think it set us up for a dramatic ending in the last two episodes of the season, though. Usually, you all beat me to the newest episode due to timezones Are you all watching The Expanse instead?

Ep6 ahoy As a whole the ep was slow but political. I liked that the Tower is so caught up in their drama they overvalue publicity. Like public humiliation. I was grinning when Siuan was getting all huffy. I also really liked Moiraine's facial expressions. Was nice to see her grasping at loopholes a few times throughout the episode. "If Wisdom is the title you claim, I suggest you start using some." RAWR! Moiraine *** Usually, you all beat me to the newest episode due to timezones Are you all watching The Expanse instead? Got in a fun ME3MP game or two. Watched the last episode of Invasion which I highly recommend people stay the hell away from. Episode 6 thought dump below: I never had strong feelings about Siuan one way or the other, so the intro was fine. I don't remember her backstory either. I think she did a good job. Wasn't terribly sold on the opening acting but it laid some groundwork. The meeting with all the Aes Sedai and Siuan seemed a bit too dramatic They overvalue pomp, ceremony, politicking, etc. It's actually inline with them. It's like a courthouse only worse. It's almost like a weeding system. You have to be capable of all their BS intricacies. Moiraine pulling Shadar Logoth's taint out of Mat was badass I liked the way they portrayed it, sin-eater almost literally. And then Nynaeve had to ruin the moment I love Moiraine's sass toward her in this episode. So much. Well, the pillowfriends scene answered my previous question Rosamund Pike is a damn good looking lady and I'm sad she's seemingly playing for the other team this time 'round. (Could be half wrong about that though.) That said, she got to flex her acting skills a lot this ep and I enjoyed it. Not sure what I think of this episode. It feels like a lot happened, but at the same time, it feels like nothing happened. I guess I expected to be blown away since Sanderson said this was one of his favorite episodes. I do think it set us up for a dramatic ending in the last two episodes of the season, though. I was curious, but I know Sanderson has a very different perspective to myself on what he likes. That said I can see why he liked it. Tonnes of fun intrigue to write and watch. Reminded me of an old pen and paper RPG I ran a long time ago. Tribal setting. The group discovered a huge undead horde, millions strong, coming for the tribes. My Players wanted to convince the tribe to unite with the others and try to stop them. The chieftain wanted to pick up and run to save their tribe. We spent hours and hours in pure dialogue and diplomacy rolls. Never had an evening like that before or since. Grand speeches, great arguments. Both sides has such good reasoning it came down to a fight my player knew they couldn't win against the chieftain. The chieftain wound up putting two arrows in him. Non-lethal on purpose. Player made a great roll and the chieftain could see the tribe's choice swing in my players favour so he left. (Obviously to come back later, muahahaha.) I loved that kind of intense dialogue back and forth, I can guess Sanderson loved that ep for much the same reason. ...I'd still say Ep 4 was my favourite by a fair margin though.

Ep 6 spoilers and also a book spoiler: I loved this one the most because White Tower intrigue is my favourite part of the series. Also, I strongly approve of Moiraine/Siun. (If nothing else, it should save us from Moiraine/Thom, the most random 'everyone must be paired off OR ELSE!!!' relationship in a series that is not exactly short on them.)

Episode 6: I was super hyped for the episode since it was teased as the best one. And now I'm really not sure what to think. My buddy has decided it was hot garbage and the worst episode of the season, lol. I can certainly agree that the narrative problems are becoming obvious even to me. I did love the Tower bitching contest. I see where Dragon Age got the Grand Game from. I love the art design, the costumes. Everything was beautiful shot. Especially that shot from above of the Amyrlin Seat. Piece of art. I like how the different outfits of the differently colored Aes Sedai reflect their different temperaments. The greens are the most sensual, right? And it's the only outfit with cleavage. Seeing them stand side by side I really noticed it. I loved the hypocrisy of man hating Leandrin who has a secret boy toy. Then again that doesn't necessarily imply that she respects the guy in any way. Everything about tower politics was intriguing, yet it also felt like it dragged. The tragic romance of Moiraine/Siuan I did not see coming. And obviously that was extremely painful for me to watch. My impossible ship has not only crashed and burned, the episode gleefully pissed all over it, lol! Ouch, my heart! ;D I read that while this didn't happen in the novels that way, their relationship was heavily implied with the whole Pillowfriends thing (seriously, what is up with the childlike names in this series?!). The whole exile scene was both too melodramatic and well done?? The show seems rather cheesy on the nose in general about grief. So that fits, I guess. On the other hand I found it completely laughable that nobody who witnessed that oath didn't realize what was going on between the two of them. Like, seriously?! No subtlety it all! So with the mostly positive part of the episode out of the way... the pacing of the plot is atrocious. Even I as a non book reader feel like the kids got so sidelined and moved along like chess pieces from A to B to C that it lacks any narrative value. Any emotional impact. It's downright bizarre that one of them is the Dragon and yet they get barely any meaningful screen time. They're like side characters to the Moiraine Show. And while I DO like the Moiraine Show very much, the actress is amazing, this is getting silly. The kids magically appear in places without any narrative string to hold on to and then they appear in another place. And now they're reunited after a split second hug and then they get shipped off to beat the Dark One without any training or context. What the hell is that?! It's like the plot jumped from first act to third act, leaving out the entire journey in between! Obviously they won't be beating evil that fast. But it all felt grotesquely disjointed. They sacrificed all coherence in the journey of the kids for the world building of the Aes Sedai. If you're going to spend so much time with the bitch club you need more episodes than 8. The pacing and the focus is completely skewed. My favorite episodes were 3+4.
