My thoughts on episode 7: Forgive me, I need to start with the thing that upset me the most: Lan and Nynaeve. What the hell was that?! This was one of the worst rushed romances I've ever seen. TERRIBLE. I can't believe either of them would hook up this soon and in this fashion. I don't know their book versions but Nynaeve seems like a really reserved insecure and inexperienced person. Look at her conservative boring clothes. I can't believe she went after Lan like this without batting an eye. That's what you do when you have more experience. That was so jarring. And while I still love Lan, I can't believe he didn't push her away. So he had a little chat with Moiraine (loved the scene! can't stop shipping them, ugh), she gives her blessing and he just let's himself get seduced?! They haven't travelled nearly long enough and on screen they've barely spoken! You need to have believable progression!
Good grief was that bad... You know, I thought I could maybe grow to like that romance because from what I gather it was slow burn and kinda tragic in the novels. Like, she thought she can't have him because he's so dedicated to Moiraine. Possibly mistaking his devotion as something romantic. I love slow burn romances. I like complicated love stories. ... not whatever the hell they turned this into on the show!
Well, on the plus side, Lan's actor has a very nice body...
I also HATE love triangles. I know what purpose they usually serve. And because they always follow the same pattern they are really boring and utterly predicable love obstacles. I don't believe the Rand/Egwene/Perrin thing is really a love triangle. Not yet. I hope they drop this shit. I don't care about it. Felt like watching some teen show tonight. Not thrilled.
Rand's mother fighting off extremely bad assailants minutes before giving birth was the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a while. Does that happen like that in the novel??
The Ways look exactly like the platforming parts of DAI and Andromeda, same hexagon floor pattern. Very videogame-y, lol. Not a fan...
Let's see, positive things about the episode... Ummm, I guess it's nice that the kids are no longer sidelined? I still don't care about them, of course. And Egwene is really annoying. OK, stop. Positive things! Oh, I liked Lan having dinner with those people and being sweet with the little girl. Yeah, that's about it, lol.
This show seems dead set on making me miserable on a personal level. *g* I'll keep watching but this has turned into a some kind of let's-see-how-much-more-painful-this-can-get thing. I'm not really a masochist. But this might be getting close... Well, I keep hearing Witcher S2 is amazing. Going to check it out now. Something GOOD for a change would be nice! If you haven't yet, do read the spoiler tags in my last couple of posts. It'll give you some idea of the differences between the books and the show when it comes to Lan/Nyneave.
As for the Ep7 prologue: I kinda liked the fighting in the scene, thuogh of course, yes, her doing that mere moments before giving birth was ridiculous, no question. While in the books, it is mentioned the Rand's mother basically gave birth on a battle field (and Aiel tend to do that kind of thing), AFAIK it is never described in enough detail to really know what happened. When reading, I always assumed that she didn't actually take part in the fighting anymore at all. I certainly didn't imagine her fighting off 10 people while basically already in labor. IIRC, it is also only mentioned that Tam found Rand next to a the already dead mother. So yea, while one might read a lot into the rather vague descriptions in the book, what we've been shown here is probably the most extreme interpretation of it (the show does that a lot it seems). [/spoiler] [/div]

Rand's mother fighting off extremely bad assailants minutes before giving birth was the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a while. Does that happen like that in the novel?? She goes into battle about to give birth, yes, and gives birth to Rand right there. She's a badass, and I will hear no more trash talk about her ![:pissedoff:](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/aJudQxosQ0kzjHfnIkXy.png) If you stick with the show, I don't think you're going to like the Aiel, given that you hated this opening so much. The only excuses i can think of is that...
(1) she was powered up by Rand because Tigraine shouldn't have been able to pull that off due to her only being Andoran, and not Aiel by blood.
or
(2) the show's writers are not that far in the books, and don't know that the Aiel's storied physical prowess is hereditary.
The choreography was horrid on the part of Cairhien's soldiers who acted buffoonish, and for some reason didn't have shields. Just noticed it but Egwene's actress has two moles, a smaller one above her lip but right under the larger one on her nose. It's like she's growing more very ridiculous.

One more thing... They combined Baerlon's plot points with Fal Dara's such as Min's introduction, and Padan Fain's reintroduction (Rand spotted him not Perrin).

Well, I keep hearing Witcher S2 is amazing. Going to check it out now. Something GOOD for a change would be nice! I've just finished episode 2, and so far I think WoT is a lot better, even considering my complaints about it so far.

I think I’m very close to done with this series. I struggled with the first episode due to the odd pacing and early and obvious changes to the book, but was determined to give the series a fair poke. With a rewatch I found elements I did enjoy and resolved to let the changes play out. The next couple of episodes were okay and, though feeling a touch rushed at times, held my attention. I was able to rationalise missing chunks of the book by putting it down to the fact that the books are BIG and cuts needed to be made. Although not true to the books, the introduction of Thom was short, sweet and quite effective. The last couple of episodes have really left me doubting the show runners’ plans. Time saved by omitting chunks of the book have, for me, been wasted in irrelevancies and arcs that haven’t really had much payoff. The capture of Logain was a fun diversion, but that whole arc ate the best part of an entire episode, culminating in the funeral of a character I barely knew nor cared about.
In fact the entire Tar Valon arc did very little for me: It introduced a few characters early, played fast and loose with established lore and added another love affair, instead of cutting down on RJ’s already prodigious obsession with pairing characters up. (Okay, it may have been alluded to in a prequel book, but that was 20 years in the past for both parties).
To compound all of this, the moment everyone was reunited (to very little fanfare) they simply left. They may as well have met in a Little Chef for all the relevance Tar Valon played to the Emonds’ Fielders.
The ways were brief and okayish, Fal Dara was changed for no apparent reason and Lord Agelmar was rude to an Aes Sedai! (as well as being pretty complacent about The Dark One and his troops).
We finally had time for the EF5 to interact, and it all immediately devolved into melodrama, love triangles and more sexy time.
Rand’s big reveal was alright, but I do feel that Tam’s revelation might have given Rand something to brood over other than Egwene if it had been introduced earlier on (you know, like Perrin and his fridged wife). It would have made the ‘who’s the Dragon?’ game even more obvious, but then the show runners haven’t gone in for subtlety much anyway.
On a (kind of) positive note: I didn’t love the actress for Min, but I thought the effects for her viewings were nicely done - probably my favourite magical element in the show so far.
Also, I’m kind of with Kappa Neko on the Shaiel fight. It lacked weight and believability for me and a more intense and gritty fight against one or two opponents would have been my preference over the super hero choreography we got. In general I feel like nearly every time the show runners have made major alterations and introduced new arcs, it has been to the detriment of the show. They’ve either been clunky and unsubtle or they have diverted and slowed the plot of the show. I wish they had gone into the first season with the idea that it might be their only one, and focused on telling a focused, paced story with a small cast of well developed characters. Wait for a second season to expand the world (sort of like the books I guess). Apologies for the long winded rant and well done if you made it through! I feel better for venting, if that helps…

I've just finished episode 2, and so far I think WoT is a lot better, even considering my complaints about it so far. Really?? I watched the first episode last night and LOVED it! It's the first episode of that show that I actually loved. Far far better than anything WoT has done imo. I was really not a big fan of S1 but they've really stepped up their game and I don't even mind them shuffling around timelines again here because it was so beautifully done.

I finished the season tonight, and yeah, I think WoT is better than Witcher season 2. I posted thoughts in the Witcher thread, but based on what I remember from the Witcher books, Netflix pretty much wrote a whole new story for season 2, not just "shuffling around timelines" like they did in season 1. If the WoT show is a different turning of the wheel compared to the books, then Witcher season 2 is a completely different wheel weaving a new pattern compared to its source material, and there are holes in the cloth. It was entertaining enough for one viewing, because I like Geralt. But if you don't like WoT, then it's ok to stop watching ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/VfxdBFbMnoUNJLwjwIDS.png)

I’m saving e7 until I can watch with e8 immediately after, so haven’t read any of the spoilers. Finishing Witcher S2 and Titans S3 in the meantime.
I actually rewatched the first 5 episodes….and found it more enjoyable than waiting from week to week the first time. Bad writing will always be bad writing, but the way we consume content has changed. I’m wondering if they made an error in making it a weekly release.

The more I read this Thread.....the more I am confident in my choice to stay away from the show even though I never read the books and thus, have nothing to compare the show to. But having watched the first episode and been so thoroughly bored with it (and confused), I have no desire to even try to watch more episodes....though I know I said earlier today that I might try.

I agree about binge watching but i think that for this show's creators a weekly release schedule benefits them more by extending the time the majority of it's viewers are discussing it (buzz) versus a Netflix style season dump where the bulk of a series' buzz is centered around the month of it's release. If this show's entire season was dumped last month it would have mostly been forgotten by the majority of it's non-book reading viewers because half of them would have been too busy drooling over Henry Cavill's oil lathered body to remember that WoT exists.

Sorry if I indulged myself a bit of trashing. As for ep7, it was really cool ! Except a handful of acting sequences. I really digged the intro in the snow and most the scenes Some time was a bit wasted if u ask me, but needed to get better attached to the young guns are we supposed to recognize who is getting out of the portal after the heroes? Mat? The ambulant merchant from ep1? Also I have almost the opposites reaction kappa neko had,lol

Agreed. I don’t hate the show. My main frustration is that I actually really like the core group from Emonds Field, but feel that we have spent too little time with them. The flash-backs and side stories have varied from iffy to really cool, but have left the stories of the main cast feeling rushed and under-developed. So far the show has leaned too much on Rosamund Pike for my taste, and not given the other actors a chance to really make their own mark. I like the series well enough to want to see where it’s going, even though I recognise the show runners will likely prioritise elements I find less interesting.

And Tom Ellis eye candy I could watch all day. So yeah, I'll be around for WoT S2 and hope it gets better... I can't imagine spending an hour of my time (let alone seasons) on something voluntary I would describe as "suffering", but you do you. I will find somewhere else to discuss this show, I think. I like talking about critiques, changes they have made, etc., but not with people who are actively hate-watching, and that seems to be what this thread is becoming ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/KsOWoVhcXUyTgnDhpOWF.png) I can only speak for myself but I am certainly not hate watching the show. On the contrary, I love that they made the show and I am rooting for it all the way. Only, if I see something I don't like, I am going to point it out. Unfortunately, most of the more major changes in the story so far, I see detrimental to the overall pacing. But that doesn't mean I am actively hating the show. I am certainly curious how they'll go on and I will watch seasons 2 and 3 with great interest as well.

I agree about binge watching but i think that for this show's creators a weekly release schedule benefits them more by extending the time the majority of it's viewers are discussing it (buzz) versus a Netflix style season dump where the bulk of a series' buzz is centered around the month of it's release. If this show's entire season was dumped last month it would would have mostly been forgotten by the majority of it's non-book reading viewers because half of them would have been too busy drooling over Henry Cavill's oil lathered body to remember that WoT exists. ![:hue:](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/ylSGZfoaGJIOHQXDloNH.png) "half". Point made, though. Maybe I'm thinking of how I would have preferred it, then, rather than what would have been better for the show, necessarily. And, of course, it's hard to know how much my enjoyment was improved by having informed expectations the second time around viewing.

I'm on my phone where I can't multi-quote, so please forgive the paraphrasing and lack of any direct quotes. I certainly understand pointing out negatives and criticisms, since I have pointed out plenty myself. But I seem to have misinterpreted comments such as "I'm done with this show," or "let's see how bad this can get," or "I want to watch something good for a change," as hate-watching. I'm glad that's not the case ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/6576594/images/CeRUIfXurYhaBmWjMBkt.png) It's nice to have this thread here for discussion. There's a quick episode 8 trailer on Twitter for anyone who is interested.

Here's some portraits by my favorite WoT fan artist Michelle Tolo. Her renditions of Mat, Perrin, Nynaeve and Elayne are spot on with how i envisioned the characters. ![](https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/007/110/862/large/michelle-tolo-wot-collection-01.jpg) ![](https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/007/110/863/large/michelle-tolo-wot-collection-02.jpg)
