S2E1 Not a bad start, showed all bar two of the characters settled in their new normal post-The Eye of the World. The Darkfriend Social at the start was…not what I was expecting. And I definitely expected the little girl to be fed to the Trollocs.
So Moiraine has been Stilled. By Ishamael. Is that the same as the books? I know she was Stilled, but I had it in my head that it was the Finns (the Snakes and Foxes) that did it to her as part of their price.
Alanna Mosvani seems like a fun lady. Wonder how (or if) they’ll show what she does to Rand? Think I mentioned it before, but given how Verin spoke about being Stilled to Lan, I do wonder if they might feel that forced bonding to be too difficult a needle to thread for todays TV audiences.

Also, I am still not sold on the level of tech (or lack thereof) they are depicting the world as having. It feels very classical/Greco-Roman, at most…when I always saw it as being more Middle Ages when I was reading the books.
Maybe just me?

2-1 reply + hefty book spoilers The Darkfriend Social at the start was…not what I was expecting. And I definitely expected the little girl to be fed to the Trollocs. She scuttles by some pretty important knees down there... Fluffy Red dress, someone from Caemlyn? Selene? White/brown dress with hands in lap. Dunno this one, I don't think it's Verin but could be. That'll be a fun surprise. A Whitecloak. There was an important whitecloak darkfriend in the books, Joachim? Can't remember anymore. Bet it's him. A Shienaran. It's Ingtar. Has to be. Presumably a Black Ajah replete with Black Ring. Gonna guess that's Liandrin. Could be another Forsaken though? Mogh or... I'unno. Girl's mother is a tinker. Probably stole the kid. Oh and the Seanchan, hard to miss. Surath or whatever miss clickity-clack's name is. *** Can't remember how Moraine's stilling was handled in the books. I think you're right though. She escaped to their realm or something? *** Alanna Mosvani seems like a fun lady. Wonder how (or if) they’ll show what she does to Rand? Think I mentioned it before, but given how Verin spoke about being Stilled to Lan, I do wonder if they might feel that forced bonding to be too difficult a needle to thread for todays TV audiences. I like Alanna and her warders so far. In terms of the bond swap, it's mentioned next ep... Moiraine threatens Lan that Alanna will take the bond by force if she has to. But that's it. They don't actually go through with it. I'm wondering if that mention is all we'll get of it, or if it's a soft-open for it to actually happen later? Getting the audiences feet wet before the plunge.
*** Also, I am still not sold on the level of tech (or lack thereof) they are depicting the world as having. It feels very classical/Greco-Roman, at most…when I always saw it as being more Middle Ages when I was reading the books. Maybe just me? I figured settlements built away from civilization (like 2 Rivers) would be medievalish, while the ones next to old architecture would be a bit more modern. I could see the architecture really running the gamut in their world though. Everything's built on everything else's bones.
***
Season 2: 1-3 + book spoilers
Darkfriends, everywhere.
I'm curious how the reveals will work.
I'm enjoying the darkfriends dialogues quite a bit. Ingtar to Perrin, Verin to Moiraine, Selene and Rand, Liandrin and Nynaeve.
Ingtar burying the traitors and trying to get Perrin to question things. "You might not like the answers but the question is worth asking." Good stuff.
Verin testing Moiraine, seeing how far she'd go. Her view that the world is already broken. And her willingness to help Moiraine, knowing she was going back to the Tower. Knowing more than she should, basically. Then there's the fact they were ambushed right near Verin's place.
Liandrin got a bit of depth and a good scene with her son.
***
Matt/Min: that's a pretty good duo there. This has potential. New actor was alright but a bit stiff in the emotive dept. Quite good for a replacement though. Him mimicking Liandran's motions as she puts the key in was well executed.
Min being duplicitous was a great addition too. Works for their story. I also liked how the "this is going to be platonic" was handled.
***
Taim/Rand scenes in the books, what little I remember of them, were some of my favourite parts. These are, okayish, but Taim needs to bring a bit more going ahead. Less crazy more faceted. His lucid moments were potent, I hope he gets to bring some regal bearing back into his portrayal.
***
Rand and Selene.
I like who they picked for Lanfear. She has the face for it. Also, she's hawt and I have a thing for dark seductresses with hair like that. (Wig notwithstanding.) I can be your emotional baggage any time you want.
***
They handled door 3 of Nynaeve's tests pretty well. Out of the first test, lemme tell ya, if someone had dumped water on my head I woulda knocked that thing out from her just on reflex.
Picked a good Elayne.
Egwene is, still, Egwene. She's like the planwrecker but even moar boringer.
***
Loial: plot advancement in progress, please check again later
***
Seanchan.
The helmets don't look like insects, they look like giant grimaces. No bang.
The gold painted pacifiers were... distracting.
Mixed feelings so far about the Shaun-Chan.
***
Overall I'm enjoying it though. The way all the plots have darkfriends tied to them, to one extent or another, is making for intriguing dialogue.

Played by a NZ film and TV legend, no less. Anyway - have watch S2E2 E1 was 'fine'. This was 'good'. I had my doubts about whichever poor actress they got for Lanfear. But she is exactly as I imagined her, which is a nice change-up.
Elayne doesn't *look* like I imagined her, but the actress absolutely nailed the role, I think.
I disapprove of attempts to humanise Reds. But I'm willing to see where it goes.
Seeing Loial angry was very cool.

The comment about the Red referred to Liandrin, not Elayne. I am not sold on her having actual feelings, and what not.

It could have gone horribly wrong if I'd rushed that post out and then disappeared to do some stuff... And beautiful eyelashes are exactly the type that Alviarin would be after. No one wants uggo eye lashes, after all. I think that's her name...Elaida's deputy.

S2E3 Processing. But improvement continues. Nynaeve That was a big change from the books, right? I think I vaguely recall her seeing something about her parents dying, but don't remember her getting stuck in the arches in the books.

I have no drawn-out comments at the moment because it's late and I still want to play more BG3, but I just watched episodes 1-4 and enjoyed them a lot. Even with the changes to the story, the characters still feel like themselves and most of the changes are working for me so far, for what they are. The new Mat might actually make me like Mat as a character I never was a fan of Mat in the books, but season 1 Mat seemed like a completely different character altogether. Too broody and gloomy. S2E3 Processing. But improvement continues. Nynaeve That was a big change from the books, right? I think I vaguely recall her seeing something about her parents dying, but don't remember her getting stuck in the arches in the books. I watched with a friend who is currently reading the books, and she does remember Nynaeve's 3rd arch taking forever. I can't remember for myself, though. It's been too long.

2-4 + Hefty Book Spoiler questions Was Lanfear associated with "blood" in the books? That's a bit of an adaptation right? *** Also, Moiraine was making some interestingly stupid moves in name of the plot. Lanfear would probably take longer to regenerate if she were in pieces... and those pieces were buried. Just saiyan. Other ways to solve your problems than running from them. Moiraine I'll leave you the knife if you're a good boy Taim. Also Moiraine I'll leave you this ceramic-looking jug of wine you could break and use the shards to accomplish the same task with.It wasn't a bad episode and I'm pleasantly surprised Lanfear is outed this early. Means she might make a proper villainess and have some interesting scenes this season. But some of the logic falls on the wayside. *** As in the books I'm liking Elyas and Perrin, and loved Hopper dancing with the sparks. Even if they all still look like cute puppies and not wolves. Wolves are BIG. *** Egwene and Nynaeve's new journey, could use a reminder there too. They get captured and turned into the... shackled/gag-ordered Seanchan Sedai whose names I can't remember offhand. But after that they wind up on Domon's ship learning water-weaves from the wave-aes sedai? Wavesedai (The same guy that Moiraine got the poem off for cheap.) Wait, damain? Was that it? And it turns out both can channel it's just (mostly) blind luck who gets to be on which end of the leash right?

Ok, I just watched 2e3 and I can say, I think I have encountered the first instance where the tv show may actually have handled something better than the books did. And that's Nunaeve's third arch experience of course. I liked how they started it by doing the whole "will you ever know if you never left the simulation?" trope. And spreading this out over the entire episode was a good move. I certainly felt her pain when she came back out in the end. Mission accomplished.

Damane are women who will channel eventually no matter how hard they might try to resist. The leash-holders (unbeknownst to the Seanchan) are women who are capable of learning to channel, but who would not do so naturally without training.

Why is there a Fremen girl in this suddenly? Because Robert Jordan never read a book he couldn't steal from!
(Well, OK, and because he and Frank Herbert borrowed from the same real world sources for inspiration.)
Anyway, I'm delighted to see Aviendha at last . All my favourite book characters are here now!

2e5 + Book Spoils I rather liked this episode. Lots of darkfriend PoVs, and they weren't all brilliant evil tacticians with master plans. Nice seeing the bad guys have some setbacks. Setbacks that are very inline with the weaknesses inherent to the dark. Suroth losing her temper further angering the High Lord. Liandrin's infighting, letting Nynaeve go. And depending how you view it, Verin's duplicitous actions rooting out info from Sheriam/Liandrin is another failure of the darkfriends. They're compartmentalized and secretive like rebel cells, I understand why but in this case it works against them. This version of Aviendha is alright. Bit more copper/red in those dreads wouldn't hurt though. Just looking at some pics quick and it seems that's her natural hair. She's got an interesting look to her. Her hitting on Perrin was kinda funny but it echoes Min and Matt's relationship thus far. It almost seems like the writing team is trying to dupe non-book readers into thinking Min/Av are romantically destined for Mat/Perrin? Not against the concept but maybe not for both. Verin kicks ass this episode. Non-book readers will eventually rewatch this and gain a whole new layer of nuance. As mentioned earlier I'd forgotten Sheriam was Black Ajah, haven't really been watching her with that in mind, but this episode seems to me to be the first real hint she isn't as she seems in the show. Then again they mention Weave of Compulsion which could be a deviation from the books. Anyways, Verin navigates her and Liandrin quite well. Did Moiraine send her or is Verin up to this for some other reason? Nynaeve takes a nice chunk outta Liandrin in The Ways too. "And you're sitting in the dark trying to justify yourself to a woman you kidnapped. Was your price worth all this?"Suroth sans helmet is... interesting. Quite the actress there. Ishamael has me curious what her price was now. Speaking of which, Fares Fares continues to do a good job. Both with Suroth and Lanfear. So, uh, Nynaeve and Elayne. That's what, two concussions against walls within a week? Few days? Poor girls.

S2E4 Sort of a placeholder episode, for my money. I liked it, but not as much as the previous 3 this season. Moment of absolute gold though with Alanna Where does the third one go? S2E5 Very, very good. I love this Aviendha. Normally when you have a build up like that "attack all at once, or she'll have you", the actual fight is either fade to black and you see the aftermath or - worse - just disappointing.
This was neither. Very impressed. She is absolutely lethal and I'm here for it. General feelings; yes - more changes from the books, but I'm caring less and less. There is a built in, in-universe reason and numerous people have alluded to it here - different turning of the Wheel. It's close enough, though, and I am very much enjoying this season. E6 is available but I'm not going to have time to watch today, unfortunately. Was Lanfear associated with "blood" in the books? That's a bit of an adaptation right? I think this is a change up, definitely. But her cover story is different as well. Inn keeper and lady about town in the show. Wandering, otherworldly noblewoman in the books.
