Well just finished my 5th walkthrough of MEA and the ME series is the only thing I have played other than Dragon Age Origins. I need a break for a bit.. What other games are really cool and similar to the Mass Effect Series that are CURRENT? Not looking for anything old right now, but something within say the past few years. I only play on the PC. I loved DAO and I loved all the ME games including Andromeda. TIA

If you have the old version of Skyrim (Oldrim) on PC, I'd recommend looking into the total conversion mod Enderal. It's a lot more linear and character-focused than Skyrim, with a new story, land, and protagonist. It's a completely new adventure. It's also fully voice acted and available in both English and German. The writing reminded me a lot of Bioware, so if you enjoy Dragon Age and Mass Effect--you really should check it out! Here's the trailer:

I cannot think of a lot of RPG that are set in space, a lot of people associate RPG with fantasy over sci-fi and action games are in the space setting. I think that is why Star Wars 1313 had so much interest.
Hmm. You might want to give The Old Republic a try, even though I only played it at launch the leveling process feels pretty close to Mass Effect, at that point in time what let the game down was a lack of endgame I just don't know if that is still the case for the game. It is a F2P MMO so there are going to be restrictions. Another F2P MMO that isn't as good is Star Trek Online, but it really doesn't have the same feel since it is just a lot of dialogue and systems, no real choices for you to make.

Alpha Protocol and even that is reaching. Technomancer, perhaps? I would honestly say Technomancer is probably the closet you're going to get, and it's really not all that similar. Unfortunately OP, there really isn't anything like Mass Effect. That was a massive part of it's appeal for so many people. There is really nothing else like it on the market. It fills a need no one knew even existed until Mass Effect came along. I've played hundreds of games, across various genres, and dozens of RPGs in particular. Nothing else has ever come close to what The Original Trilogy provided. It had it's issues of course, far more than just the horrible ending, but it provided an experience that was unique unto itself. Different from even other Bioware titles in many ways, despite how they are also similar in many ways. I've been looking for a game "similar to mass Effect" since ME3 ripped out my heart and my undying love for this franchise. So OP, if you ever find it, do the world a favor, and let everyone know.

The other folk pretty much covered it, not really anything else out there close to ME. Though I have 2 other suggestions, albeit different genres of game, but you could still apply a Mass Effect feel to them if you wished. X-Com 2 is a pretty awesome sci-fi, mostly turn based combat with dice roll for your attacks, hits etc. (Just had a massive expansion pack released too!) Also has a little bit of straight forward base/economy management, and you can near fully customise your soldiers with lots of cool stuff. (Tattoos, face masks, cigars, glasses etc.) Even better you can get mods to expand that significantly, including voice packs, and yes there are Mass Effect skins/voice packs/music you can download since the game was made on the Unreal engine. I'd still be hooked on that if I wasn't suggested to pick up Stellaris, which is a sort of space empire building game, a real-time version of Civilisation I guess, though time moves in days as opposed to months/years. Been playing the absolute crap out of it, you do need to get the additional content packs IMO, to really get the full value of it from the extra features/elements they bring in. Also a game that can be modded, and again you can get Mass Effect music, UI and Alliance ship skins. It's a slow-burn game, and can even seem boring at the start, but it really picks up once you get some tech research done. There is also a Star Trek total conversion mod, even in the current beta version it's been rock solid stable, and adds so much it's like having another game.

It is a shame that there aren't other games like Mass Effect. It's pretty unique at the moment. Cyberpunk 2077 may end up giving us a similar experience, just without the aliens.

Kingdoms of amalur reckoning I like KOA but it is nothing like Mass Effect. There is virtually zero character development (outside of abilities) or choice and consequence, not to mention a lack of companions. I know it's not space opera or even sci fi but the DA trilogy feels the closest to me because it's built around companion interaction and character development. That to me is what made the OT really stand out. There just aren't many games that focus on this combination as the top priority.

I loved DAO and I loved all the ME games including Andromeda. TIA I am in the similar position, and my game wishlist is: I am waiting for Technomancer to come on sale, I saw that sometimes the price really drops for it to like 10$ which is great for a game from 2016 or whatever. I think it is the closest to Bio games, but has multiple flaws. I also saw trailers for Nier Automata today b/c steam advertised sales, but that does not look like ME, and the sale price is 50$ so too high to take a risk on an unfamiliar development and K-style boobies. I put it on the wishlist anyway, because it reminds me BnS, only SP Other than that my "wish list" is Tyranny, Assassin Creed: Origins and Greedfall. I did not like Fallout 4 when I tried a trial. I played 5 hrs of Prey and found it too boring & fps very awkward, but I will continue... eventually. I will also eventually resin for SWTOR to catch up on the story. It is a MMO, but has a strong SP portion, way stronger than the sp games, funny enough.

ME is really the only space opera rpg I can think of (well there is KOTOR but that game is 14 years old). You would think there would be more but it is unique and then the stupid internet has to go and try to murder ME.

I would not discount it just because it's on-line.

Is there a way to play it for people who don't have the old version of Skyrim? Not at all, it requires SKSE. I would have thought someone would have updated that for the SE by now.

Not at all, it requires SKSE. I would have thought someone would have updated that for the SE by now. They had to basically start from Zero with it, because SE is 64 bit, and SKSE was built for 32 bit.

If you love DAO, I'd also try some of the more recent isometric RPGs out there: Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity, Torment: Tides of Numenera. No shooter-style action, but they have tons of dialogue, companions (no romances though) choices with tangible consequences, multiple endings, etc.
