Ok So for all of you that dont like long things this is going to be one of those long ones. So There will be no TL/DR.
I am angry. Specifically I am angry at Bioware. Not EA but Bioware.
Back in 2009 they were at their peak, they could do no wrong Origins had just come out and it was a masterpeice. I was just discovering Mass Effect for the first time and it blew me away. It had aliens and cool guns and a total badass named Shepard.
What I want to know is where it all went wrong? How did this company go from being at the top of its game to the broken mess we know as Andromeda. It baffles me.
For me personally when I play an RPG, iots all about the story, the writing is king. I immerse myself in the character I am playing. its the same with books and tv although its a different kind of immersion. In an RPG you are that guy so to speak.
Now If you look closely at writers like Ian.M.Banks and Peter Hamilton, you will notice that their stories arent anything fancy they arent reinventing the wheel they are just a different colour. The premise is basically always that there is an overarching enemy hell bent on destroying the world. It's a old one but its how you dress that story up that captures the imagination. interesting aliens here a sneaky subplot there all add up to make a great story. So why cant Bioware do this?
And what is it with the daddy/family issues? For crying out loud! "my dad left me" " My uncle buggered me in the closet" " My mother set me on fire" I dont fucking care theres an Alien invasion coming GO AND FIND A THERAPIST! Knock it off will ya?!
Where are the heart wrenching moments? look at The last of us and even Wolfenstein. Choose one person to die when you really like both of them. Where is the anguish and the passion? Look at the scene where Ryders father passes away and your choices are... "meh" or... "Oh no but totally meh".
It is my humble belief that Bioware are lazy. They wont spend the money needed to create a great story. Look at the lead writer for Andromeda... gone already after only a few short months. Cant hack it. This guy is not a writer. he has a few basic ideas knocking around but has never had anything published. Thats not who you want writing for you in a video game or a book or a tv show. if they are going to have any chance of turning this around EA need to open the purse strings and splash out on someone who can write a decent story.
The things that makes me the angriest about all of this was being in the forums prior to release and hearing all the fantasic ideas spilling out. Bioware ignored ALL of them. They had the chance to create something great and they tripped and fell. They could have drawn inspiration from the problems facing early North American colonies but instead they chose... whatever this was.
Theres a reason people say "If it isnt broken dont fix it". Because its true. If something works and it works well why change it? notice companies like Bethesda, Rockstar, Naughty Dog, hell! even Activision. They all have one thing in common. They dont change what works. Sure they get some stuff wrong but their formula is consistent. Thats why they keep producing great games. They never try to reinvent the wheel or appeaseall crowds. You either like their games or you dont.
The graphics for Andromeda were good in my opinion. they made nice looking worlds. The angaar(?) were an interesting race almost like the Native Americans. They appeared way too late in the game though almost like an after thought. I dont know why they couldnt have been one of the more prominent races in the game. Are you telling me in the andromeda galaxy, there are only two alien races and one of them is hell bent on killing you? Again, piss poor writing.
The dialogue was the bane of this entire game. I honestly felt like I was playing interactive Scooby Doo at one point. "Gee willikers Ryder! theres the kett out to kill us again" "Yikes" in fact I was almost excpecting to hear " I would have gotten away with it if it hadnt been for you meddling kids". because these characters were written by kids. they weren't written by a professional. I mean have you ever heard " my face is tired" in a film? I havent? "God damn poetry"? What? "Who are you talking to I cant even..... I have to go".
You're not writing a comedy you're writing a sci-fi RPG. That doesnt mean you cant inject the odd bit of humour but when you have to put bells and lights on it, it kind of loses its value. (insert canned laughter here) you did it with Inquisition too. It's jarring.
Returning to my previous point about gaming audience. I personally have never played a Dark Souls game. I dont like them. I find the combat slow clunky and boring and the story is just not there. But The thing about that game is it is unapologetic about who its target audience is. Thats fine. Thats how it should be. 1 game 1 audience. Dont like it? Fuck off and play something else. It seems that you dont actually have a target audience. Andromeda was a mish-mash of everything. Again poor writing.
Your writers and staff are jumping ship. Bioware has become a toxic place to work. Why? Because you wont put the time and effort into making a decent game. There is nothing wrong with being a die hard fan of this series its a good series has a lot of potential since space is infinite. You had 5= years to make this game. thats a long time and it looks like you spent the first 3 of them drinking beer and looking at porn. Its really a disgrace in 2017 that your business model has just become a dogs dinner and that you really dont care that you are owned by one of the most hated companies in America if not the world.
Enough is enough! Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. you wont succeed its been done. do what works play to your strengths. Once upon a time I didnt have to wait for reviews for your games because I knew the standard was up to scratch. Now I'm waiting for it to hit the bargain bin. I simply do not trust you with this sort of thing anymore.
Sincerely
A very very pissed off gamer.
