Yet again another new book in my collection arrived today. There are still some web shops that use pre-production images for their products, which don't match the final product. This one should be beige, but the product page incorrectly showed a blue one. Very confusing. What was a bit annoying was that I got a message that the package was delivered, but in reality nothing arrived. I explained it to the delivery service by web chat. They contacted the driver. And they told me that they would try to fix their mistake and apologized. The driver drove back to the address which received the package by mistake, collected it and brought it to my home within 5 minutes. I didn't expect a web chat to actually work and that the people at that address where willing to give it back to the driver. Anyway, the book in question was "The Fall of Gondolin", edited by Christopher Tolkien. The style is similar to the other deluxe editions. The paper and print quality are good. I am glad that they included a ribbon marker. There are 8 color and 15 black and white illustrations, 2 family trees and a map of Beleriand. The illustrations are created by Alan Lee and the map is drawn by Christopher Tolkien. The book is not a simple self-contained story. A complete narrative was already published in "The Book Of Lost Tales 2", but Tolkien later rewrote a superior one, which he never finished. Much like "The History of Middle-earth" Christopher Tolkien takes you through several iterations and explains what survived in the many notes and other publications and brought it together in one dedicated book. There is no index, but there is a 23 page "List of Names" in alphabetic order, with a few lines for each entry. There is also a 2 page glossary of obsolete, archaic and rare words. And of course you can also use the online Wiktionary for others. That helped me a lot in other Tolkien publications as well.

Today I've received a very tiny, but lovely, book with one small poem. It's called "Bilbo's Last Song (At the Grey Havens)". There is a touching history surrounding the copyright of this booklet. Tolkien transferred it to Joy Hill, a secretary who took care of Tolkien's fan mail. The transfer was a gift to thank her for her work and for the time when she helped him when he broke his leg. Because of that, it usually isn't included in one of Tolkien's other works. It probably is somewhere online, but I rather have that booklet. It's dirt cheap too. The hardback pocketbook has about 32 pages. Each page has one or more beautiful color illustrations, created by Pauline Baynes. The dust cover matches the book cover. I.e. the same illustration is used. The dust cover contains some gold lettering, which is replaced by white on the book itself. The paper and print quality are great. The poem contains 24 lines. I'm glad that I have this little piece of art.

A couple of hours later, I've received 3 more items. The first one is "The Children of Húrin", edited by Christopher Tolkien. Like the other deluxe editions this book comes with a matching slipcase. This time the style is blue with gold lettering and a gold dragon helmet (the Helm of Hador). The paper and print quality are good. It included a ribbon marker. The book contains 8 color and 25 black and white illustrations, 3 family trees, and a map of Beleriand (using black and red ink). The illustrations are created by Alan Lee and the map is created by Christopher Tolkien. This time it is a self-contained story, which is not interrupted by the editor's comments. You'll find those at the start and end of the story instead. There is no index, but there is a 19 page list of names with clarifications. This is handy, because it mostly saves you from looking at other sources. The tale was previously published as "Narn i Hîn Húrin" in Unfinished Tales, but in this book it was edited by Christopher Tolkien to make it a stand alone story. The second one is a boxed set, containing 4 books: - "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil", edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond and illustrated by Pauline Baynes. - "Farmer Giles of Ham", edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond and illustrated by Pauline Baynes. - "Roverandom", edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond and illustrated by Tolkien. - "Smith of Wootton Major", edited by Verlyn Flieger and illustrated by Pauline Baynes. All books are hardbacks in a pocketbook format. The books have cloth covers with gold lettering. The paper and print quality are OK. The main reason why I wanted the boxed set is because it contains 2 additional Tom Bombadil poems, only found in this extended (2014) edition. Two other poems, which didn't make it in this booklet, were previously published in "The Book of Lost Tales 1". Another one, which mentions a fire brigade set against a dragon, was excluded for obvious reasons. However, that one can be found in "The Annotated Hobbit". These extended booklets contain additional information and commentary, and some contain drafts or alternative text fragments. The third one is a boxed set too. It contains 4 books: "The Hobbit" and 3 volumes of "The Lord of the Rings". Much like the other set, mentioned above, the books are hardbacks in a pocketbook format. The books have cloth covers with gold lettering. The paper and print quality are OK. Apart from their smaller size, the books are not special. However "The Hobbit" does contain many black and white illustrations, created by Tolkien. Because of the book size and font, the books have more pages, but are still very light. The main reason I bought this set was because it is easy to read in bed.

Another one arrived this afternoon. Ghehe. This time it is the "Tales from the Perilous Realm". Again this is a luxury edition with a matching slipcase. The style is grey with gold lettering and a gold motif, designed by Alan Lee. The paper and print quality are good. A ribbon marker is present. It contains 50+ black and white pencil drawings, which are also created by Alan Lee. He created the fold-out color illustration too. Because it is a 2008 edition, none of the features of the "The Tolkien Treasury" (the first boxed set described in my previous post) are present. However, that means that this time all the content is not interrupted by an editor. What is included is the "On Fairy-stories" essay, also without interruptions of an editor. That means you can read the unedited versions first, before delving into the deep, using other books. The book contains: - "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil". - "Farmer Giles of Ham". - "Roverandom". - "Smith of Wootton Major". - "Leaf by Niggle". - "On Fairy-stories". There are 16 poems in this version of "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil". Two additional ones can be found in the earlier mentioned boxed set. Two other poems found their way into "The Book of Lost Tales 1". A fifth one can be found in the "The Annotated Hobbit". There is an expanded version of the "On Fairy-stories" essay, released in a 2014 book ("Tolkien On Fairy-stories").

This afternoon, I have received the revised and expanded edition of "The Annotated Hobbit", with commentary by Douglas A. Anderson. I had little expectations, and so did the company who sold it. They thought it would fit into a regular mail slot, but obviously it was too big. Luckily the delivery lady rang and handed it to me. I first thought it would be similar to "The History of the Hobbit", but this is something completely different. The book contains the text of "The Hobbit" with commentary in the margins. Sometimes drafts and early versions are added. Throughout the book more than 150 black and white illustrations are used to clarify the text. 16 color illustrations are added in the middle of the book. The illustrations are created by Tolkien, Alan Lee and others (some from the translated versions of "The Hobbit"). Most of my Tolkien books are published by Harper Collins (which was sold out), but this one is by Houghton Mifflin (which is appropriate, because they originally released "The Annotated Hobbit" first). The dust cover is a matte illustration, with a glossy round dragon picture in the middle. The hardback is green with gold lettering. The paper and print quality are OK. Despite the commentary in the margin, "The Hobbit" itself can be read well, although I would not recommend this to be your only copy of "The Hobbit". I initially wanted this book, because it contains some previously unpublished poems and writings. But I am happy that I have the book, because it exceeded my expectations in many ways.

Tonight I received my last planned slipcased luxury edition. There are more such books, but none (except one) are about Middle-earth, which is my main interest. The remaining one is Robert Foster's "The Complete Guide to Middle-earth (The Definitive Guide to the World of J.R.R. Tolkien)". That sounds like a mouthful, and I think it is not worth it. The book contains several errors and inaccuracies, which already existed in the 2003 edition, and which Mr Foster has chosen not to fix in the 2022 edition. Also, it doesn't seem to be that definitive, because he is supposedly working on adding material from "Unfinished Tales". That is bizarre, because that title was already available since 1980. Too bad, because Ted Nasmith's illustrations in the guide are awesome. The one that came today was "Beren and Lúthien", edited by Christopher Tolkien. This luxury edition is green, with gold lettering and a motif, designed by Alan Lee. The paper and print quality are great. As usual a silk ribbon marker is present. There are 9 color illustrations and many black and white drawings (at the start and end of a chapter). These too are created by Alan Lee. There is no index, but Christopher included a helpful 10 page "List Of Names". He also included a mini dictionary of words, which may aid the modern reader. The book contains tales and poems around the fate that shadowed the love of the mortal Beren and the immortal Lúthien. Throughout the years Tolkien changed the story, but not the essence of it. First his son gives the original version and later presents the changes made in later times. These texts are scattered throughout various locations in the legendarium, but his son edited it to the least obtrusive way possible. Then 3 paperbacks arrived. The first one is "J.R.R. Tolkien - A Biography" by Humphrey Carpenter, who was given unrestricted access to all Tolkien's papers and who interviewed his family and friends. The second one is "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien", edited by the same Humphrey Carpenter, with the help of Christopher Tolkien. This book is important, because it is referenced by many other Tolkien books. The last one is "The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays", edited by Christoper Tolkien. The book is important, because it too is referenced by many others. It contains 9 lectures, from which 2 are especially relevant to his Middle-earth work. These two are expanded in their own books ("On Fairy-Stories" and "A Secret Vice"), which I hope I can get later.

It has been confirmed that there will be a new revised and expanded release of Humphrey Carpenter's "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien", which will be available in November 2023. It will contain more than 150 additional letters. The hardback edition will be £30. People are already speculating what it would mean for other titles based on the letters. Source: Amazon UK. Edit: Some more related news... The Tolkien Collectors Guide have even more information on about 1000 published and unpublished letters. A live stream will be held on Friday with more information. I was expecting two paperbacks today, so I decided to check the mailbox. I opened the door and I was greeted by the delivery lady, who giggled because of my surprised face and handed me the two packages. Weird coincidence. The first one is "The Inklings" by Humphrey Carpenter. The book is about Tolkien and his friends, most notably C.S. Lewis. These friends were all writers and thus they called themselves "The Inklings". They drank beer on Tuesdays at a pub and on Thursdays they met in a college room to talk about the books they were working on. The group played an important role in each other's work. Humphrey Carpenter, who also wrote Tolkien's bibliography, was given access to his unpublished letters and diaries to write this book. The other one is "A Secret Vice - Tolkien on Invented Languages", edited by Dimitra Fimi and Andrew Higgins. The book is about two essays ("A Secret Vice" and "Essay on Phonetic Symbolism") and their manuscripts. It gives insight into how his invented languages and their sounds, played an important role in his books.

Today I got "J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century", by Professor Tom Shippey. My first impression is that it is a thorough "making of" Tolkien's books. It is written for everyone, who is interested in Tolkien's process of writing "The Hobbit", "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Silmarillion". From what I understand is that this book is targeted to a large audience, and has a similar content to "The Road to Middle-earth: How J.R.R. Tolkien Created a New Mythology", written by the same author. However that book is more academic and in-depth. The 347 page paperback, also contains a list of references and an index.

This afternoon another paperback arrived. It is "On Fairy-stories (Expanded Edition, with Commentary and Notes)", edited by Verlyn Flieger and Douglass A. Anderson. What I found out about it: This essay was initially published in "Essays Presented to Charles Williams" (compiled by C.S. Lewis) in 1947 and later in "Tree and Leaf" in 1964 and since then in various other publications, like "Tales from the Perilous Realm". It formed the basis for a 1939 lecture. In this piece Tolkien analyzed his own work. You can also read how the essay was received at the time. In addition, the editors show the organic history of its writing, using different manuscripts as a source.

I don't usually buy the many special editions of Tolkien's main books, containing illustrations. But if those are illustrated then that is a bonus. Instead I buy books that explicitly feature Tolkien's art to compliment his writings. I have several of those and they are great, but these cannot compare to what I have received today. First impressions: The two books that arrived today exceeded my expectations in every way. I am in awe. Let me first tell you what the two books are about. On June the first 2018 the Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford, opened a Tolkien exhibition, showing its large number of Tolkien documents, manuscripts and art. At the same time they published two books about that exhibition. The first one is called "Tolkien: Treasures", edited by Catherine McIlwaine, who is the Tolkien archivist at the Bodleian Library. I read that the book was supposed to be a paperback, but it is larger than that and doesn't feel cheap at all, even though it only costs about the same as a regular paperback. The paper quality is superb, as is the print quality. The book weighs 470g (16.5oz), which is a lot, because it only contains 144 pages! Nothing feels cheap. If you see gold text on the cover (the outside and the inside) is embossed. It is a great introduction to Tolkien's life, his art, and his writings. Don't expect the 144 pages to contain mostly text. No. The majority are beautiful color illustrations. The book above is meant as a companion to the next one. The second book is called "Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth", edited by the same Catherine McIlwaine. That book is a huge and heavy hardback. The book has no dust cover, but it is illustrated by one of Tolkien's illustrations in color. I like that, because I have never understood the attraction of dust covers. Again, the paper quality is superb, and so is the print quality. This 416 page book weighs 1855g (16.4oz). About half of those pages are text and the other half are usually full page color illustrations. This is not the collector's edition, but they could have fooled me, because every detail about this book is stunning. The book covers the same topics as the first one, but is much more in-depth. This time it has the form of the exhibition's catalogue ordered by the following topics: - Reading Tolkien. - Childhood. - Student Days. - Sheer Invention. - The Silmarillion. - The Professor's Study. - The Hobbit. - The Lord of the Rings. - Mapping The Lord of the Rings. The book starts with a number of essays: - "J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biographical Sketch" by Catherine McIlwaine. - "Tolkien and the Inklings", by John Garth. - "Faërie: Tolkien's Perilous Land", by Verlyn Flieger. - "Inventing Elvish", by Carl F. Hostetter. - "Tolkien and 'that noble northern spirit'", by Tom Shippey. - "Tolkien's Visual Art", by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. The book ends with the following: - Contributors. - Acknowledgements. - Select Bibliography. - Picture Credits. - Exhibition Items. - Index. I am very happy with these two books! Wow!

Tonight a third book arrived. This one is controversial (to say the least). I knew that when I ordered it, though. Let me explain: Artificial languages played an important role in Tolkien's stories. However, they were never fully developed. And they didn't need to be, because they only had to play a believable role in his works. Of course then adaptations of his books appeared, which required a more developed grammar, with a larger vocabulary. Those new versions of, for an example, Sindarin are usually called Neo-Sindarin, to make the distinction between Tolkien's original and the alternative one. As long as various rules are followed, then nobody really objects to that. And derived works welcome the new variants, because these have, more or less, the same look and feel of Tolkien's version. So far, so good. The paperback is called "A Gateway To Sindarin" by David Salo. David Salo's work gained popularity, after Peter Jackson's LotR, who used David's knowledge. However, various scholars objected to this book, because it made some errors and wrong assumptions. That is why the book is controversial. Among these were Carl F. Hostetter, Patrick H. Wynne, and Bertrand Bellet, who wrote lengthy (mainly negative) reviews about the book. At least it will give me some insight in what went into the movies. Of course Tolkien himself wrote about the languages, but, like I said, with limitations. I am going to hunt down another book, which has less problems than the one David Salo wrote.

This afternoon two art books arrived. The first one is "A Middle-earth Traveller: Sketches from Bag End to Mordor" by John Howe. The 192 page hardback has a dust cover with embossed gold text on a beautiful color illustration of Gandalf in a landscape. Removing it, shows the same illustration, but this time without any lettering. I prefer that one. The print and font quality is great. Often the text is organically wrapped next to the images. Usually a page contains one or more images. I think there are more illustrations than pages. John Howe shows illustrations and sketches about any aspect of Middle-earth. From Melkor to Ungoliath, from Lake Town to Meduseld, from carts to tools. All of those are stunning. He also mentions those made for the two movie series, in which he was a conceptual artist. The second one is "The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook" by Alan Lee. The 192 page hardback has an illustrated dust cover with embossed text and the illustration in the center has a plastic coating. The hardback without the cover is identically illustrated, but isn't embossed and doesn't have the coating. This time too the paper and print quality is great. Again, a page contains one or more images. Officially there are about 150 illustrations, but at a first glance there must be more. Like the title implies, it mainly covers "the Lord of the Rings". He writes about what goes into illustrating the books and, mostly, the work he did for the movies as a conceptual artist. It's great to see his work and his commentary.

In the early evening three more books arrived. The first one is "Mr. Bliss". The 192 page book contains two versions of the same work. One in a regular portrait orientation and the other one in landscape. The landscape version contains a handwritten version. Both are color illustrated by Tolkien. The hardback has a dust cover, which match the two versions. So, one (at the "front") is the portrait and the other (at the "back") is the landscape version. Nice detail. The hardback itself is cloth with gold lettering. The print and type quality is great. The story is about a car, which is said to be inspired by the mishaps around his own first car. However, a family member disputes that and says that it was inspired by Christopher's favorite toy car and that the three bears in the story belonged to Tolkien's children. There are weak links to names of characters from Middle-earth. One is Sam, but that seems far fetched. Although there is a Gabber Gamgee in the story. However, this time Sam is the son of Sergeant Boffin. And the name Boffin is used in "the Lord of the Rings" as a hobbit family name. Obviously, this story has nothing to do with Tolkien's legendarium. The second one is "the Road to Middle-earth (revised edition)" by Professor Tom Shippey. This paperback is an in-depth exploration of Tolkien's creativity and the sources of his inspiration for his books. Those not only include "the Hobbit", "the Lord of the Rings" and "the Silmarillion", but also include "Unfinished Tales" and "the History of Middle-earth". However, the focus is on "the Lord of the Rings". The last one is "Tree and Leaf". This small paperback includes: - "On Fairy-stories". - "Mythopoeia". - "Leaf by Niggle". - "The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son". In the poem "Mythopoeia" a lover of myth, opposes a hater of myth. In general, the book goes far to explain the nature of his work and its success.

Today a paperback arrived, called "Tolkien and the Great War (the Threshold of Middle-earth)" by John Garth. It is considered a given that WW1 greatly influenced Tolkien's works. The book is about him and his friends during that time and explains why. It also mentions his religion, which plays a part. That latter part was omitted in the movie "Tolkien", which used this book as its source.

Today four books arrived. The first is "the Hobbit Sketchbook" by Alan Lee. It's a 192 page hardcover. The jacket contains gold embossed lettering, with small plastic coated illustrations, which contrast the "old" sketchbook look. The hardback is nearly the same, but the lettering is white and not embossed, nor does it have the plastic coatings. The paper and print quality is excellent. Like "the Lord of the Rings" version, there are more illustrations than pages and there are more illustrations than text. The sketches are monochrome, but there are watercolor paintings as well. Alan Lee describes the work he has done for Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies in detail. Whether you like those or not, Alan Lee shows his mastery of being a concept artist. If you prefer the books then this is still a great choice, because he makes what Tolkien describes come alive. The book is awesome. The second one is "John Howe's Ultimate Fantasy Art Academy" by (obviously) John Howe. This large 224 page paperback has a great paper and print quality. The illustrations are mainly in color. And there are again more illustrations than pages. The marketing department needs to be fired for dreaming up this over the top title. However, this is NOT your average art book. In fact it is written to help an artist to teach John's profession. He goes into detail from techniques to creating a portfolio. From book illustrator to lead concept designer, John Howe has done it all. So he obviously knows a thing or two. Maybe in that light the title isn't that silly after all. The third book is called "Flora of Middle-earth (Plants of J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium)" by Walter S. Judd and Graham A. Judd. The dust cover of this 424 page hardcover contains the only color illustration, but there are many black and white illustrations inside. Below the jacket is a plain white cover, with only shiny, but simple, black lettering on its spine. I love that simple design. The paper and print quality are OK. I had no idea, but it seems that Tolkien described the plants in his books in enough detail such that most of them can be identified. Relatively a few of them were pure fantasy and even many of the fictional plants are based on scientifically grounded botanic principles. Walter is a botanist, who describes the flora and their habitats in detail and their usefulness (if any). His son Graham is the wonderful illustrator, who shows how many of these plants look. The last book is called "the Real Middle-earth (a History of the Dark Ages that Inspired Tolkien)" by Professor Brian Bates. The paperback has a lovely illustrated cover with an embossed front. The book contains 26 black and white photographs, which illustrate the points made. The title describes the content. Note that Brian is not only a psychologist, but he is also an expert in Anglo-Saxon shamanism, which is helpful considering the magical and mythical world of Middle-earth.

A friend saw that I needed a scarecrow to get rid of the pigeons on my balcony. He said that he bought one for himself at the same time, but that the plastic raven didn't work. The pigeons sat right next to it. Ghehe. He brought it anyway as a present. He figured it would fit nicely on my black Tolkien bookcase. When he put it there on top, I giggled and shouted: "Hide! Crebain from Dunland!" Because he is not a Tolkien fan he awkwardly looked at me. He had no idea what I was talking about. Anyway... Two more items arrived. Yesterday I received the "Sindarin-English & English-Sindarin Dictionary" by C.M. Carpenter. This is a Sindarin/neo-Sindarin dictory, in which the author clearly states the source of each word in the list. I am still waiting for another book, which describes the languages in detail, but this paperback is a nice start. Today an empty journal arrived with a hardcover showing Tolkien's "Bilbo comes to the Huts of the Raft-elves" illustration. You can see Bilbo sitting on top of a barrel as it floats down the forest river. It contains 160 ruled pages and it has a ribbon marker. The booklet is published by the Bodleian Library, which contains all of Tolkien's documents, writings and artwork (packed in about 500 archival boxes). The quality of the journal is great. Am I going to use it? Nah. Don't think so. I just thought it was a nice item to own. There is a little story behind the illustration. It was Tolkien's favorite watercolor and he wished for it to be included in "the Hobbit". He was disappointed when it was omitted from the first American edition.

The arrival dates of books have a will of their own. This book should be delivered much later this month, but fortunately it dropped by today. It is called "A Fan's Guide to Neo-Sindarin: A Textbook for the Elvish of Middle-earth" by Fiona Jallings. This 360 page book has a colorful dust cover, but the hardback itself is surprising. It is plain dark blue. It feels almost rubbery, but it has a nice texture to it. And it has only a small barcode at the back of the book, but there is no lettering, other than that. Even on its spine. The paper and print quality is great. My first impression: The book feels well organized and structured to teach you Neo-Sindarin. Tolkien's description of Sindarin was not complete and contained enough words to serve in his books. Neo-Sindarin is an attempt to fill in the gaps and therefor there won't be a single "correct" and "complete" version. Fiona, who is a linguist, says that this is her version and that other versions are not necessarily wrong. She encourages you to draw your own conclusions after reading the book. She also maintains a website, to help you study the language, but if that is not your goal then there is an online resource there to help you translate simple phrases as well.

Three more to go. One will arrive next week and another in November. That will most likely complete the collection for now. There are more Tolkien books, but I am not interested in those. This one is called "The Great Tales Never End: Essays in Memory of Christopher Tolkien", edited by Catherine McIlwaine and Richard Ovenden. The 232 page hardcover has under the dust jacket a dark blue cover with gold lettering. The paper and print quality is great. The book comes with a dark blue ribbon marker. The book is richly illustrated in color and black and white. This book, like the title implies, is about Tolkien's son, who was responsible for editing his father writings in such a way that it was possible to release many titles for posthumous publication. Without him there would be no "Tolkien studies". Note that the initials "CJRT", as seen on maps, indicates that those were drawn by Christopher. Catherine McIlwaine is the archivist of all Tolkien's documents and art at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Richard is the director of that library since 2014. No idea what he contributed to the book. Most of the authors of the 11 essays either worked with Christopher or were close to him.

I forgot that I ordered this book ages ago. It finally came in a crumpled large envelope, so I took a picture of it before opening it. I feared for the worst, but it turned out to be undamaged. The book is called "the Hobbit or There and Back Again (A Graphic Novel)", illustrated by David Wenzel and adapted by Charles Dixon. It's a 144 page graphic abridged novel, with stunning illustrations. Originally a three volume edition was published in the US by Eclipse Books between 1989 and 1990. A one volume edition was published in the UK in 1990. This revised edition, which has 30 new and improved pages, was published by HarperCollins in 2006. I'll show you two pictures of my copy.

After six weeks, I finally received my last Tolkien book, until a new one will be released in November or until I find another excuse. This book is called "J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator" by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. The 208 page paperback was released in 1998. It is obviously richly illustrated (about 200 pieces). Most of it covers "the Hobbit" and "the Lord of the Rings", but it also covers art for other books he wrote. It covers watercolor and pen drawings, dust covers, calligraphy and decorations, to name a few.
