Are there any director's cuts which you think are better than the theatrical releases? Aliens, Alien 3, Blade Runner and Daredevil immediately spring to mind. Alien 3 and Daredevil are transformed in the director's cuts from barely watchable to decent movies, for me anyway. Edit: And Troy, which also turned out to be rather good once the director was allowed to add in deleted scenes. I would certainly agree that the Final Cut of Blade Runner is the definitive version of the film, and already had it in mind when I posed my question, but we're heading into murkier territory with the others. I know all about Sigourney's opinion of the Special Edition of Aliens and I also love it very much, but I went to see the theatrical version on release and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it, and it could definitely be argued that its pacing is much better overall. Alien and Aliens are clearly not the same film, and attempting to make the latter more like the former might not have been the best idea. It's one of those things - those of us who adore a franchise may not be best placed to decide the minutiae of what works best and what doesn't. As far as I know Alien 3 isn't a what I think of as a Director's Cut - it's an attempt by the studio to repair the consequences of the fallout with David Fincher. They may have succeeded to a certain extent, but we'll never really know what a Director's Cut would have looked like. Of any of the films which have been mentioned, Alien 3 might be the one with the most parallels to ME:A - from development hell to mediocre release. I haven't seen the version of Daredevil you mentioned. Once was enough. At this stage (post Argo and Gone Girl) Ben Affleck is literally unwatchable as a film actor for me. And I'm one of those people who complains when the word literally is misused, so the hatred runs deep!

Awards are no indication of quality.
Frankly, I'm surprised gamers have such a need for their preferences to be validated by reviews and awards. Music fans, by contrast, know that these things are meaningless and that often the best stuff is dismissed by critics at the time it comes out.

Awards are no indication of quality. I don't know about that. To some degree, I feel quality must be a factor when it comes to getting some recognition, at least a lot of the time. Like, take Cuphead for example. It won best art direction, and looking at the entire thing, I can't deny that it deserves it. The team nailed the 1930's aesthetic and animation so beautifully that I wish it was an actual cartoon I could watch.
