Look at how Atlus changed Princess Eruca! Eh, I prefer the short-haired version to the long-haired version. It's not just the hair, though. The latter version just looks generic to me. Maybe it's the difference in style but the former looks more distinctive. Yeah, the first has a badass expression. The second looks like she'd put her gun down and be like, "let's go get ice cream senpai!"

Maybe it's the difference in style but the former looks more distinctive. Yeah, the first has a badass expression. The second looks like she'd out her fun down and be like, "let's go get ice cream senpai!" I think it's a mix of a lot of things. The more thick-lined art style helps makes the character look more distinctive. The positioning of her legs implies motion. The smoking gun implies it's been used and is ready to be used again. Also, contributes to a feeling of motion. Her face expression might be vague but with the aforementioned smoking gun, it looks badass and gives the impression of someone daring her enemies to try something at their own peril. Basically, the character is calmly and nonchalant reloading her gun without stopping her stride after taking down an enemy. The shadows also look really good. And yes, the short hair does help make her look more distinctive because combined with the style, it helps her avoid blending in with other princess characters. When compared to the first design, the second just don't stand out on its own, in my opinion. Despite the movement of the cape and hair, the character doesn't seem as animated. The pose also feels like the standard heroic pose with weapon which can work but doesn't, I feel, in this case. Honestly, maybe it is because I'm not a fan of this style when it comes to faces but she also looks really generic. Combined with the art style, her long hair also causes her to blend in with other princess characters. That's why art style can be very important when it comes to making characters stand out visually.

I actually became curious to see how fans of the series felt about the redesign and in one of the articles, I found out that the character was originally supposed to have long hair but she was given short hair to convey a princess with a different hair style than one would expect. The reason they changed it back to the original idea in the remake was to emphasis her depiction of royalty and I quote: “the image of a princess you generally imagine.”
I learned this after I'd written the above post and was a bit amused by how the first design was supposed to not blend in with other princess designs while the second one was supposed to invoke them.

1) YEAH BUT ISN'T STEEL AGAINST MAGES TOO or 2) Do you think practicality should be a concern among fantasy RPGs, if yes to what degree and why? or 3) How is it possible to think something is an inconvenience while not suggesting it be removed or restricted, to which demon in the Ars Goetia did you sell your soul to gain access to this black magic? ALl better more interesting questions than OP 1. I'm assuming the whole idea that something as material as armor would somehow keep a mage from connecting to the Fade. I don't know why armor would when the whole Veil can't 2. I think it should only be a concern in a medievil RPG when they're trying to be super realistic. The moment you add magic to the mix, forget about it. Let people look like what they want to be. my ankle length hair in my game does not interfere with your bald muscle man in yours. ( I hear it improves aerodynamics, maybe they're up for some MAYHEM) 3. think this ties into my reply of question 2. I think the only reason long hair hasn't been a thing is because the clipping. People say give us long hair, we don't care about clipping! but I actually think most players "off the street" as it were, would care a lot and point at is as some sort of failure of the art department.

I agree, tho I have to say there are bad ways of clipping, This looks so ridiculous, you want to make an awesome looking exit and you collar looks like it grew hair.and kinda positive ways of clipping. Here it's barely noticeable and finally makes my Inky look like he has short hair in the back.

Here it's barely noticeable and finally makes my Inky look like he has short hair in the back. I wonder why it does that. Is it like, the hair object doesn't know that the cloth is an object it shouldn't go past? do they only fix this with an eraser in every scene by hand? is there no way for the hair to understand the physics of an object blocking it? edit add: Why is clipping still so bad

Y'know, I've been trying to start a new Origins run, and it really bugs me how bad all the "crew cut" options are. Inquisition had a wide variety of short-but-thick hairstyles, but there's just no good way pull that off in the first game, where you have to choose just one or the other, for the most part. I created what I thought was a great "Cousland, ten years later" in the DAI creator: ...but I can't pull off anything even close to that to actually play a younger version of that character's look in DAO. Even with mods, there aren't any good options (mostly 'cause all the hair mods are all long and "beautiful", even for male characters!). I try to duplicate the look, and end up with this monstrosity: It's feast or famine, I tell ya.

I really think long, loose hairstyles on female characters in games almost invariably look really stupid. Only exceptions I can think of: And the reason those work is because the animations for the hair are just so dang good. Bioware has 0 track record of doing anything but making hair look like plastic so this isn't really something I want to see in the game. I also think it's wildly impractical for combat. I won't really begrudge other people if they want to put it on their characters, but I would almost certainly never use it, unless it was done up in a braid or something.

The Witcher series by CD Projekt Red. Her name is Yennefer, I think. Well I'll have to give this game series a try. She's very realistic looking. I just played this whole series for the first time. The first 2 can be a slog because they are old and have a lot of problems. But the third one is fantastic. If you can't manage to push through the first two (and I barely could) it's worth reading a synopsis of the plot and playing the third one on its own. I had to force myself to play the first two. I couldn't make myself stop playing the third one.

I'm sure there's plenty of feminine hairstyles that can be both pretty but practical. Stylish buns, artistically arranged hair strands, so long as it's not impeding vision and giving an easy handheld, I'd say go for it. Not everything demands shaven heads.
...Unless you've got lice. But still!

While long hair is in no shape or form practical for a female or male close quarter combatant due to being extremely grabbable, in your eyes reducing vision and just all sorts of annoying (I mean, how many people do you know who have long hair and work out with it open), I'd say DA as a series is so far from realistic even if you remove the fantasy elements that it doesn't matter.
I'd say however that to retain the suspension of disbelief you don't really want anything long that isn't at least a half up-do to keep the hair out of the characters eyes on your figher/rogue/archer.
As for DAI hairstyles they clearly didn't care about how convenient the styles would realistically be and the reason for shortness must have been to avoid having to work on clipping and animations instead.

Remember Edna Mode's advice about not wearing capes? It is kinda similar to that.
But who cares? It is just a game and long hair looks cool.

Lol, everybody on page 1 hating on the OP for talking about long hair on females in the games... but then turn around and are praising the dwarves for going into battle with hair that's just as susceptible to being pulled/hazardous etc. Quite amusing, I must say. Either way, in a game setting... I prefer there to be choices for all hair types, so everyone can make the characters they prefer. Personally, I like buns and ponytails for the reason of making my female characters look like warriors and be mostly practical. (Plus I just generally like the look... Ash in her bun ) Too bad the vanilla hairstyles in DAI are garbage cause I can't get a decent looking character with any of the styles for the most part. They all make the character look weird. Imo

Given the nature of OP's other threads I'm not inclined to take them seriously.

I've gotta say that really long and feminine hairstyles bug me - there's no way in hell that hair isn't getting in the way without spending three out of every four hours using fifty different kinds of magic to keep it in place. Stuff like this makes me eyeroll so hard it hurts. However, I'm also disappointed with a lack of longer-but-still-practical hairstyles in BioWare games - like some nice braids for example. I'd also like the option to use different hairstyles for my casual and combat outfits. But, y'know, BioWare's hair sucks in general.

Well, yeah I tend to think long hair or long beards are impractical for anyone going into battle just as 'boob plates' are impractical for reasons most people have gone over here especially for a front line fighter. (They get in your face/eyes and provide a good point for an enemy to grab onto.) But at the same time I recognise this is a fantasy game with magic, spell barriers and frost or fire spells that the characters survive which would kill us in real life so... take with a grain of salt.
Its less doable in DAI but in DA2 particularly I generally had my female mage Hawke have the longer hair style while my warriors and dual wielding rogues had shorter practical styles. (I was particularly fond of the variant Leliana wears but without the extra braid woven in.)
