I've been a BioWare fan since KOTOR and love their stories and deep characterizations. But Morrowind was my first TES game and still think it's the best in the series. It had a big open world and deep characters (Vivec and Dagoth Ur.) Oblivion I did not like at first it took me 15 years of off and on playing to finally like it. Skyrim I loved from the get go. What makes TES games popular is not the developer made stories or lack of characterizations. It's the do what you want when you want and make up your own stories. There are no class restrictions at least in Skyrim, so you can create whatever builds you want. The factions are optional and you don't have to join all of them. For example when I play a Warrior I join the Companions never the College. When I play a mage I only join the College. The only time joined multiple factions is when I pla an assassin. i join the Dark Brotherhood then use either the Companions or the College depending on my skill set as a cover. On PC the replayability is magnified with mods which add longevity to the game and the developer console. For example sometimes I rp asa non Brotherhood affiliated freelance assassin. I make up my own targets and then pay myself through the dev console. Lastly my favorite two rpg's ever are Morrowind and Dragon Age Origins. Nowadays though I'm not a big fan of BW, but am a huge fan of Obsidian. So the two developers games I look forward too now are Bethesda and Obsidian.

If I may, I'd like to echo part of talyn82's statement.
What makes Bethesda games so great is that you are never railroaded or forced to do anything.
There may be permanent changes to the setting as you play, but it's always player choice, even going as far as to ask the player "Are you sure? Going further will make you an enemy of **faction name here**"
On PC, you have mods, glorious mods. You can develop whatever skills/abilities you want, or roleplay as a specific "class".
Most games are like guided tours. You enter from the beginning, and you follow a path to the end. There is nothing wrong with that.
But Bethesda games give you a basic backdrop and a starting "kit", with a main story for the player to follow or ignore as they see fit.
Some games are "turn off the brain and enjoy", others are "100% ALL IN". Bethesda games manage to be both, for as long as you want.

Will be interesting now to see the reception Starfield gets once Beth start to hype that.
Bethesda with the announcement, beta, release, and ongoing support of FO76 have taken every ounce of goodwill they have built with their community since the release of Morrowind and burned it all in a huge dumpster fire.
For those that wonder "why Beth games always get hyped" I think you are about to see a very different reception to Beth's next game. Every aspect of Starfield is going to be under a microscope. Honestly I think its going to be pretty ugly, might even be the end of Beth if Starfield isn't outright amazing.
Despite my defense of Beth earlier in the thread many posters here make good points about all the things wrong with Beth's games and all those things are going to be strongly scrutinized now. Even I'm not going to be willing to give Beth a pass anymore. The fact they still refuse to work on a new engine alone makes me pretty hesitant about Starfield.
I really think if they don't go above and beyond its going to be ugly. If they push out Starfield and its even just only at FO4 level of good it might deliver a blow the studio won't recover from. I liked FO4 but to be honest I would only call it good because of a heaping helping of that goodwill they have now chewed through.
If Starfield doesn't eclipse everything they have done in the past they are going to get absolutely raked over the coals. And seeing how creatively bankrupt they are and the EA levels of greed they have stooped to with FO76 I can't say I'm optimistic about their chances.

My believe is that Bethesda spent a lot of time depending on the mod community, which is the biggest difference for me between Fallout 76 and their other games. Which is also why people were always so excited about those game, for they could only imagine what they or others could do to make the game theirs. With Fallout 76 for some people it showed how dependent Bethesda is on those people and I know there are always going to be people that enjoy and buy games like Fallout 76, but I think its the same thing as Andromeda for BioWare. They alienated groups of people while others still enjoyed what was offered.
As far as Starfield is going to go, I really don't know. It seems Bethesda has lost or damaged their reputation as being a big AAA studio that cares about gamers with some of their latest antics in certain areas of players. I will be paying attention to how the game is received.
What I am going to be hoping for is that Bethesda stops getting a pass from "reviewers" for it seems with something like Andromeda it was a game for reviewers to find a bug or issue and then complain about it non-stop, but with something like Skyrim the bugs and issues that were left over from the main game and are still there in a port years later was along the lines of being "quaint" and "not a bad thing, because you get bugs with Bethesda".

Since FO76 launched they haven't gone a full week without a new PR dumpster fire turning up. Bethesda really looks like a full on clown show at the moment.

To me the fun is the exploration (especially dungeons)
Quick question-is it possible they could add assets into fallout 76 to turn it into a really good single player game? Redo the vault/add npcs etc. add places/people likely they did with dawnguard

Why do Bethesda Games always generate such hype?Because Todd fanboys/girls like to drop down on their knees because he's one of these do no wrong developer gods.

Redo the vault/add npcs etc. add places/people likely they did with dawnguard Yes, no problem really, but it is a good single player game as it is now. And they will be adding quests, opening vaults etc. Whether they will add human npcs we don't know. I expect they will eventually but this will not happen soon.

I rather feel like Bethesda is more like a balloon deflating noisily.
