Speaking of what was, is and currently isn't, I cam across this article. Here is a quote regarding story telling.
With these kind of shared-world games, it’s hard to care much about the character that you’re controlling because they simply fill a blank slate in this world. In Anthem, you’re merely a Freelancer, cut out of the same mold of all of the other players who inhabit the game. I asked Darrah specifically whether or not this Freelancer moniker would be akin to someone like Shepard in Mass Effect, who had a well-realized direction that BioWare created that we, as the players, then helped shape moving forward. Darrah told me that’s not the case and instead, your own Freelancer will fill a sort of generic role with some slight backstory being provided
Wow. talk about watering down "deep char narratives". can a generic role freelancers connect with Agents in any meaningful way? Are we even supposed to? I get the feeling that 90% of the talkng is from the NPCs.
Well, I met two people in my life with verbal diarrhea. The ability to tune them out is an ear saving gift.

Man, I wish I was passionate enough to even engage in this conversation...but it looks like a massive run-around that I tend to expect now a days anyway.
My little sabbatical from forums and the net has done we wonders, I actually give a damn about games again for the first time in a while.
I am hoping to keep it that way, but I got to admit the circular logic messes with the mind a bit.

To me it’s the whole The backstories with characters that will grow line. Are you going to affect how they grow or is this some horrid linear story beats.

Wow. talk about watering down "deep char narratives". IF ONLY THIS WERE TRUE! It would be a good thing. This is what RPG players have been asking Bioware to do for a long time. Stop forcing our PC into a straight-jacketed, and often goodie-two-shoes Chosen One, role, let the player determine the role and let the story be emergent. Shepard was the antithesis of an RPG PC. But ... I doubt that Bioware is actually going to give up that much control. They are all about the "deep char narrative", as you say, which means scripted up the wazoo. There is a critical path in Anthem, after all. Not a branching path neither. I think the PC story will be on rails, like every other Bioware game since ME1, and no matter what agency you may have with NPC relationships, every "char narrative" is going to be identical. Here's my dream team: Bioware's writers, combined with Bethesda's (at least wrt Skyrim and FO3) story design, and CDPR's open world. Bethesda has the best balance of agency and story, letting you sew together your own story quilt from patches they provide, but the worst writers. Bioware has the best writers, but the worst open world design. CDPR has the best open world design, but the worst story design and writers untested on original work.

Nah.. not bickering. Think of it as the Ying/Yang. It provides a counter point to the good-shoes that acknowledges no defects in the game, even though past games contain defects galore vs marketing and the game itself. Anthem will be no different. Expect "rebalance" like weapon nerfing.... see I told you there was defects.

Wow. Way to use loaded language there, bro. And it’s not like there aren’t more neutral ways to describe a yin/yang, like optimist and pessimist, or hopeful and skeptical, or forward looking and backward looking. To counterbalance your loaded language, here’s equally loaded language, but of the opposite polarity: It provides a counter point to the nattering nabobs of negativity that acknowledge no good qualities of any game, even though past games contain cool stuff, wins awards, and sell millions, vs the endless hating and raging of entitled gamers. Anthem will be no different.

Entitled? Does it mean value for money spent? Does it mean the "entitled" gamer sets the quality bar too high? Or expects whole truths from marketing rather than set unrealistic expectations?
Just wandering ...

Good(ie Two)-shoes? Does it mean acknowledging just how much value one does get for $60, when AAA games have production budgets that approach blockbuster movies? Does it mean "good-shoes" shouldn't appreciate a game for what it has to offer, instead of comparing it to earlier games, even when such comparisons are apples to oranges? Or expects game marketing to be like marketing of every other product on the planet -- a bunch of hype that rarely has any connection to truth?

Actually, recent Bio titles (ie: ME:A) had their budget cut so drastically, the studio hired some EU studio to do the animation via auto tools, if my memory serves. Well, we all know how that worked out. How many gamers were pleased with their 60$ animation value? ... ' cause the game tanked and the studio was dissolved. Unless I'm wrong about the budget and Bio spend... what was that? .."... the equivalent of a blockbuster movie?" which would make it even worse.
At the end of the day, Bio's marketing has changed little from DA:I.... much hype about the game and failing to meet their braggadocio . Add EA's rapacious monetization policies that affected game designs (see their sport titles) that use gambling tactics that force alert gamers to be suspicious of the marketing machine.
BTW, has anyone else noticed the random spawning of a weapon with a LB like behaviour (2017 demo) was missing from 40 minutes of 2018 game play demo?

The deal is BioWare games don't sell, so the budget they were given was based on a formula for how many copies of BioWare games have sold in the past. Not that their budget was slashed, if anything they probably had a budget similar to Mass Effect 3, its just that they have to focus on so many other things that people say are a must in a game anymore. I remember all the whining about how the Shepard Trilogy looked "last generation" or "two generations ago".

They didn't cut the budget. The first guy responsible was unsuccessful creating MEA with the first vision they had. Heavy on procedural generation. Then he got fired and Walters salvaged with what was left.

What I have heard is that the only parts were to be using procedural generation were planets to work like the UNC missions, the planets like Eos and such were part of the game all along.

Which made the whole thing probably salvageable. But the procgen part was supposed to be quite large.

Definitely not on the scale of "blockbusters" unless we're talking 1980s/90s costs. MEA had 40 million production budget which was half TW3 (probably why we got half a story and generally bland characters).

Though I could argue that since the $60 cap on price was set in the Nineties, it's fair to use Nineties dollars and budgets for comparison.
