I'm loving D2 so far. I'm not even bored of grinding yet despite the fact that I've been no-lifing it since the midnight launch. So far I've done nothing, I know very little about Destiny and nothing of the plot (if it has one). The first game doesn't have one to speak of. It's a series of loosely connected events masquerading as a campaign, and as a result, they don't really have a discernible impact on the universe. The two expansion packs are much better in this regard, but their stories are entirely self-contained and I highly doubt any of their content would be included in a free trial. They aren't, but if the trial amuses, there is a complete edition at a bundled price.

After beating the campaign and grinding my ass up to 265 power so far, I have to say that I enjoy this game immensely and finally deleted the previous title from my system, which may have actually taken a piece of my soul with it. Scant as the main campaign was, I really enjoyed it. The endgame was infinitely better than the one we had last time, but I must admit that I miss having the ability to select story missions for repeat play if you so choose. I definitely do not like the way strikes are set up. The random playlist is definitely a step down.
One thing that irks the shit out of me though is the way shaders are set up now. I like that I can change the color scheme of individual armor bits, weapons, ships, sparrows and ghost shells, but the fact that they're one-use consumables fuckin' sucks. I wouldn't mind the one-use thing so much if I was able to at least keep purchasing them with in-game currency, or even that bright dust, but the way it is now just makes it microtransaction fodder.
I hate the no insta-kill for sticky fusion grenades in the Crucible. One of my favorite things to do when running a sunbreaker or defender titan in D1 was running around lopping people on the head and running off to let the nade do the rest of the work. Now they're just a meager supplement for the kill. Friggin' sucks.
Having my baby back (Mida Multi-Tool and now the terrific Mida Mini-Tool) takes away the pain though. :yara:

Love the game so far, can't say if it's good/bad till the new paint wears off to see how it holds up post launch as that's where it matters most with this kind of game.
Have my titan up to 275 stacked with a dozen+ exotics, already started my second character and sitting at 100. I've put in a lot of time since launch.
I will comment on the changes/additions:
1.it actually has some sense of story this time πI loved the first two missions cause it tells so much. The guardians are hyped up as invincible(they don't permanently die as you all know when powered with light) killing machines and in this game they're greatest asset is taken away and you see/hear how bad they manage without their powers. It goes to show even "invincible" can be knocked to the ground.
2.the weapon/ability system change. FANTASTIC for pvp cause one hit kill capabilities are restricted and it's a much more skillful game, I'm a competitive gamer at heart so this change naturally appeals to me as I can actually tolerate crucible in this game more so than I could with D1. Random chaos was not fun. I will say for PvE however it has some negatives (unless you use mods, mods for grenades/super charge rates are HUGE bonuses) as your damage output is limited in strikes, nightfalls, and high end bosses, has me curious how it'll effect raids. I think they could bump up heavy weapon drops to give the players a little more push in these events. You also can only upgrade weapons this time with the same archetype I.E. hand cannons upgrade hand cannons, scout rifles upgrade scout rifles. It makes you have to grind longer for specific weapons just to upgrade and do it all over again. As for the supers, I dislike how they streamlined it further, but it's a shooter to begin with so I wasn't expecting it to have in depth skills and customization.
3.custimization: I've seen the destiny forums covered in "you brine the shaders bungie" but I don't agree to it. Fit one the new system lets you upgrade pieces individually now, as for them being consumables instead of permanent, shaders drop like candy. I've got over 30+ shader colors and probably a total of a hundred or so and it's only been 5 days since launch. Looting chest as much as possible is the way to go if you want shaders, nightfalls, strikes, and public events (which there is a TON of with how fast they occur)..
4.new subclasses: sentinel is the master class in this game hands down. It's offense and defense and it can do a ton of damage. Based off my own experience with the hunter ckass so far and what I hear people say if the other subclasses, the titan is simply superior. Golden gun goes by very fast, arc strider has no defense to it, the warlock does nothing but float and shoots a purple ball that takes its sweet time to hit people.
5. Pvp itself: I'm fine with the addition of 4v4, but I disapprove how it's the standard for everything. There is no 6v6, 3v3, or free fall anymore but I'm hoping it's something they fix up. They also incorporated a quickplay playlist where you can no longer select the game mode you want to play, instead if supremacy gets picked you're stuck with it and vice versa for any other mode. It'd make more sense to have separate playlists for choice sake and a quickplay playlist for those who just want to get in a game fast as possible and don't care on the mode. Destiny won't be a game with a lacking population(FYI Bungie reported 1.2 million players online at morning of yesterday I believe) so it won't stretch it out that much. I've already stated I love its competitive vibe so I'm good on that. I would like to see Bungie try to invent a new mode that is special/unique to destiny, get that defining pvp mode out there.
6. Fast travel is nice, especially when you don't get your sparrow till you beat the game π‘ Would've saved me a lot of running if I had that as well. Also a great way to hit public events in quick succession.
7.clan feature: it's still halfway not working (won't show roster) but I like that they're encouraging clans/communities to grow and get involved in the game. I understand there will be lone wolves out there who despise online gaming but I legitimately feel this games max potential is when you're with a group chilling in PvE or crushing people in pvp.
8. The micro transactions don't bother me. The bright engrams are very common to me so far that I think I won't "need" to buy from enverse. This'll be a wait and see approach cause regardless of my feelings, this system is still more aggressive than how D1 did microTs. Keep it all purely cosmetic and we're good.
9.can we even replay missions? I do know for sure we no longer have the ability to pick individual strikes and it's only available in the strike playlist where RNG decides the strike. It's the same issue I have with pvp having a quickplay playlist but no choice in picking any other modes.
All I can think of at this moment. I won't judge the game till probably months down the road cause as I said earlier, it's a game that NEEDS to sustain itself down the road because of how it's setup. If it can keep me playing till January/February then it's doing its job. I'll say it's fun, can be a challenge and does feed my hunger for now as I haven't found a good game this year yet. I definitely feel like it's an improvement over D1 overall and should only get better as Bungie gives the players more choices in pvp and playlist selection as well as strikes+ missions.

Yeah I love the sentinel titan. I'm definitely a titan fan and was glad to see defender get some space magic offense goodness. So glad to have my sunbreaker back, but it's hard to deny the appeal of going Captain America on everything.

Some of these GG players baffle me with their quick friggin shots. I hear that gun activate, I run for cover and wait for it to pass. I've always been a grenade fan myself. I could never quite get the hang of it myself, so I'm all wombo combo whenever I roll my hunter.

That said if you're hitting your shots and can get it up quickly, it's an awesome zoning tool as well.

How different is D2 to D1? Because just looking at it- it looks like a very expensive expansion to D1. I played D1 dirt cheap, I enjoyed it, but I didn't get the hype or why people were putting so many hrs into it. I'm assuming i kind of have to play it, right? I'm thinking about downloading, but I'm hesitant on it. Mostly, I don't know if it's $100 good or $60 good.

It's why I'll never understand the comments from others how it's a "destiny 1.5" cause that's how it should be. Especially since so many franchises have to much drastic changes where they become unrecognizable. as for how different is D2 to D1? There has been some changes regardless of how similar they are, I even mentioned them all earlier. The class system is streamlined further, the weapon system has been redone in how it functions and how you upgrade them, the mission structure has changed, and this time destiny has a clear way on how you progress in power. As to how good it is, I myself won't judge till it proves it has longevity to it. It's simple too, if I'm not playing it months down the road I'm going to say it's not good because destiny is a game that's "meant" to keep you coming back even months down the road. It's why it's endgame needs to be good. I am however enjoying it so far and pvp definitely seems like a big improvement that appeals to my competitive nature. if you can handle a grind then you may like it, just be aware it WILL be a grind.

So, if ME1 made no improvements over it's sequels you would have been okay with that?

So, if ME1 made no improvements over it's sequels you would have been okay with that? Did I imply D2 made no improvements? I said they're still the same game as in key elements on what they are, are the same. Destiny didn't suddenly go 3rd person out of no where or dropped the supers/abilities entirely. It changed the weapon system, the customization l, the mission structures, etc etc. it's up to the player base to decide if they're actual improvements or change for the sake of change. They're similar games yes, but not even close to carbon copies of one another but that's just me, as I said earlier, there are other people who can't find much of a difference and view D2 as nothing but a 60$ expansion rather than a sequel. I would've loved to see ME2+3 be more like ME1 cause then there wouldn't be any action focus over RPG elements nor would they have been corridor shooters. As much as I like 2+3, they were pretty bland and boring gameplay wise because of it. So yes, I'd rather ME1 been the key to build off of rather than 2+3 cause you'll find I think they're lesser games because of change for the sakeof change. It's change that worked outnevertheless but still a change I saw unnecessary. Gameplay got worse, characters improved and story was still a contradictory mess in 2+3 that eventually put bioware into a wall. Im curious when ROGs were ever about the grind, I think that depends on what RPG you're talking about cause most I play have no grind or it's very minimal. I'm used to mmo/mmo lite games having some sense of grind but not many RPGs do.

So, if ME1 made no improvements over it's sequels you would have been okay with that? I don't think that this is the best comparison, because as far as shooter mechanics goes, Mass Effect was a hot mess. Janky gunplay and clumsy power usage left it with oodles of room to improve. Destiny, for all its various faults, at least got this part down pat by comparison. The differences in gameplay are more subtle, like the weightiness added to the hover jump and now being able to grab edges rather than just falling off the side, which overall made it a whole lot better to me. It's more the missions and the way the game is structured that is significantly different, and it really needed to be. As for the graphics, I thought the game always looked pretty solid overall, even now, so even just a slight improvement isn't really a negative I think.

More of a design complaint, but the state of the armor is annoying me a bit, particularly the gauntlets for titans. The pauldrons are ridiculous on just about every legendary set I've seen. I'm basically just going to stick to my smaller rare set until I find something even remotely acceptable lol.

After watching Twitch stream gameplay of both games, I've to say the reception is as contentious as the ping pongs to Andro. I agree with a lot of what he says actually. This story would not be impressing anyone if the first game hadn't set the bar so low. The shooting is as fun as ever but they haven't really added any interesting new enemies and there really isn't much challenge unless you're underleveled for something. Making Strikes and Crucible modes accessible only through randomized playlists still strikes me as a baffling decision. The one area I'll give them credit for is that they made the side content more interesting. Exploring each planet through Adventures, Quests and Lost Sectors is much more engaging than the previous game.

I'm having a really good time with the game. Been grinding ridiculously hard to be raid-ready for tonight (sitting at 294 right now, turns out I overshot the requirement by a good bit), and despite spending far more time playing in the first week than any sane person would, I'm still finding new stuff in patrol areas and whatnot. My major complaints with the game have to do with some of the planet NPCs - every time I do stuff on Nessus or Io and hear them talk, I want to garrote myself; the new stratification of weapons leaving sniper rifles and shotguns feeling overshadowed in PvE; the longer ability cooldowns, which even though it fits the theme of the game, is still annoying from a pure gameplay perspective; and some of the more minor quality of life changes (fewer vault slots, inability to pick an individual strike from the director, the limited mod slots in your inventory, and the complete redesign of the shader system). I think the game would benefit from having another strike or two, as well as making them more rewarding to incentivize doing them over farming public events. Overall it's sitting between an 8/10 and an 8.5/10 depending on how I'm feeling when I'm talking about the game. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it didn't have to, and despite some confusing/shrewd decisions on the part of Bungie/Activision, I still think it's a very solid game and is worth every penny if you enjoyed any of the expansion packs for D1 since it feels quite similar to Taken King and Rise of Iron. I remember when people could mock things without being labeled as the thing they're mocking.

Wow, this guy has some strong opinions: A lot of it I agree with. D2 simply having a story at all has people up in wonder, while I like the addition it's not gods gift either. I lost my interest in it after the first few missions cause they never really capitalized on the theme of guardians with no light. Your own character gets it back in the second mission (plus they're pretty much rehashed) and the attitude of the characters goes from depression to "we can do this!" In seconds like the youtuber says. I do disagree on the praise for its gunplay, reason being destiny can quite honestly be argued as the most fluid shooter out there. The shooter market is over saturated however there are some that feel clunky or give you a hard time. I mean halo 5, this supposed flag ship franchise of Xbox has broken aiming to its system. Destiny doesn't have that issue which is why it's appreciated cause at least it's a shooter done right. Did it innovate on it? No, but like I said, it can really be argued as the most fluid one out there right now. i already mentioned the lack of choices in pvp and replaying missions+strikes so I'm in agreement with the dude (and I've been arguing the point in destiny forums but because it's so new people want to feel like it has a ton of content). The campaign is pretty short too, you can probably get it done in 7 hours, much less if you speed run it and don't dilly dally. In terms of new additions there really isn't much. Fast travel is nice but again, not gods gift. Being able to shade individual weapons/armor is neat but not impressive to me. While I personally don't care about customization in a shooter(especially a fps where you're never seen 98% of the time) he's also right in the CC just being the same as D1, there were no improvements to it really. the game will be relying off its addictive nature more so than how good/bad it is. It's why I won't completely judge it just yet cause it needs to show how good it's end game content can be post launch, bungie can't really afford to have another content drought for 8 months like D1 had at one point cause you'll lose people doing that in a game like this where you need to feed the addiction. its still a fun game, but not GoTY good but it's also not terrible either. Had destiny not been connected to last gen consoles I'd bet money D2 would've just been a big expansion to D1.

I love it. I admit bias, I have >1400 h in D1. Thought I would lament the loss if my OHK shoulder charge but I am adapting.
Better story than MEA. So what if its short? I find it exciting, funny and engaging. Looks and sounds beautiful. The guns are punchy.
Only thing I miss atm is 6v6.
