Probably my most replayed DA game as well. The pace is just right somehow. *coughs in 8 playthroughs...at least! Of DAI* I stop counting with DAO. 1 try in DA2. And around 5-10 in DAI.

I'm not usually one to argue DAO above all, but in terms of sidequests and scope, it was still their best effort yet. Every sidequest was either meaningful and woven directly into the main story, or so very obviously unrelated whereas you could deliberately do these when you feel like taking a break from your task. I hate it when they try and make every filler collection run sound like it's a meaningful thing your hero should be doing. Additionally the Dark Souls-esque open-but-directed level design gave me enough of a sense of size and travel, while never leaving much room for slack. When it comes to pacing, it's clearly ME3. It's possibly the most replayed BW game I own, and it isn't even my favorite - but the way I am and the way my life & time allocation works, it was just perfect - every mission has an atmospheric intro dialogue, exactly the right amount of action time to not be boring, and closes with an interesting event plus getting everyone's take on it afterwards, cooling down back on the ship. They all tied into the larger narrative so it's not just arcade-y silly meaningless fun neither. You could always turn off the TV and feel like you did something and felt feelings, even if you only have like half an hour. So I'm hoping they're taking the best parts of both of these things; with the way the pacing and world design has been described, that may very well be the case. I still rank KOTOR as the best Bioware work on both side quests and pacing. The quests flowed in your natural main path, gave you meaningful world building about the planet you were on and there was almost no backtracking (with a few exceptions that just showed how well crafted the rest was). Of course the smaller maps allowed for it due to easier railroading, but even DAO wasn't as good as KOTOR, despite also being on smaller maps and railroaded a lot.

Dragon Age 2 is definitely my favourite DA game to pick up and play. I love Origins, but Ostagar and Lothering have eaten up many a promising save. Veilguard may have many problems, but I sense it may be similar to DA2 in that regard. For me it was the deep roads in DAO, the gameplay in DA2 and the Winterpalast in DAI.

I hate it when they try and make every filler collection run sound like it's a meaningful thing your hero should be doing. Additionally the Dark Souls-esque open-but-directed level design gave me enough of a sense of size and travel, while never leaving much room for slack. DA2 side quests were very good too, and I liked how certain characters returned throughout the years and were further built upon. And I wasn’t crazy about a lot of chantry board/black stone irregulars/mage collective quests. I agree with you though, it’s nice to not have every quest forcibly related to main task or plot. Otherwise you start to funnel too hard and limit the scope. Quests that expand the setting are also good, like the idea of just being able to explore the Necropolis and have conversations with the dead and their past lives, or helping set up a puppet show in Treviso… I would love something simple like that. Not sure I would compare map design to Dark Souls, given shortcuts and bonfires are key aspects, but definitely agree maps succeeded at letting you flow from plot point to plot point nicely. (With a few exceptions… looking at you, Brecillian Forest and Temple of Sacred Ashes…) DA2 is my favourite Bioware game period, but not for the topic at hand.
Yeah, I keep referring to "like old school levels, but you can go back and forth and also return there" as "Dark Souls" esque, and there's definitely a better term for it. But it works the best for me. The world is "free" but not "wide". Most importantly, it all feels "designed".
I have to say, as I recently started my recap-playthrough of DAI pre DAV launch, the areas are actually a lot more amazing and deliberately designed than I remember. It was really -and I remember having had this thought 10 years ago- a problem of direction/leadership? The content created was almost ridiculous in volume, but also in quality per se. They just let it all go to waste for nothing.

I actually thought Andromeda was a pretty major improvement over Inquisition in terms of side quests, although they did still run into ‘we have these big empty worlds and need to fill them with SOMETHING issue.’ Like the first murderer in Andromeda, or side quest to investigate Jien Garson death, or the people that hack your SAM, or everything with Reyes and Sloane Kelley on Kadara. That might be more indicative of side quest quality in Inquisition though, lol, not hard to go up from there. The only truly gripping side quests from Inquisition were either companion quests, war table quests, or judgments. And I guess the haunted chateau can count too. Yeah map wise I like Andromeda moe rthan Inquisition in terms o fmap as it fewlt open bu ti tdidn' tfee ltoo open lik e DAI does. I htin kDAI hasa bette rstor yan dbette rcharactres bu tin terms o fques tdesign I think that's on eo fth efew areas Andromeda did beat Inquisition.

I'm hoping it has none. Just installed the MMMOG called Thrones and Liberty from Steam. Why? It's free and it has over 3M players. Result? Game crashed and I had a black screen. Had to use the TaskManger to end the game... but dear Steam says it's running. Uninstalling didn't work cause Steam says it's running. Had to do a PC restart then uninstall....
All of this to say that's another reason I'm not preordering DA4. Let the adventurers take a crack it it first.

It's been so quiet today. I don't know if I should be worried or not. I think the biggest pieces of news to come derive from two data points: - when the review codes have gone out - longer (earlier) indicates confidence.
- when the review embargo drops - earlier is also confident, the day before launch would be a concern.
There are two groups of people that I think EA/BioWare need to shift. - So-called 'casual gamers' that don't pay attention to the internet - that's through traditional advertising of which there will be lots.
- People who are aware but on the fence - that's going to take a wash of good reviews, which requires balls of steel for EA to confidently back with an early review embargo.
And I'm sure we're getting a couple more 'heroic' trailers with soundtracks from Audiomachine.

Yeah, nice thing about Origins maps is they walk this fine line between intentional design and diegetic to the world. Like I enjoy BG3 a lot, but they’re very obvious with their signposting to where it can feel more like a theme park than a living, breathing universe. DAI is a beautiful game with a lot of good environmental storytelling, for sure. I’ll add that most anything involving agent recruitment and main quest of each zone is usually decent as well, although it’s obvious where corners were cut. But development was VERY troubled and mostly traces back to issues with Frostbite and making the game playable in old gen consoles.

EA had them with the very first Vailguard trailer. Result? Huge negative backlash..... They may have shrunk by now.

The thing is, the tone of the first trailer is more suited to general advertising now. It was a poor choice to start on. Inquisition launched its 'peppy' The Breach trailer late in the marketing cycle and that landed just fine.

Y'know, I sometimes think Bioware does this on purpose, making multiple names with the same letters, just switching them around or, if they're being really spicy, changing or doubling one or two letters. My favorite string of samey names to be perpetually confused by across both DA and ME is Oriana (Mirada's sister and Fergus Cousland's wife), Orana (the slave girl you free from Hadriana in DA2), Orlanna (a girl Feynriel saves in a sidequest if you let him go to Tevinter in DA2). I thought there was also an Orena but there is actually an Oren (Fergus Cousland's son). Feynriel and Fenarel drives me nuts.

He answere question in the comments. @escritacompedro vor 3 Tagen Hey, Mark, do you know when the reviews are going up?
@markdarrah vor 3 Tagen I wouldn’t expect anything before the week of the 31st
Edit: Pedro Henriquedo you think Act 2 and 3 of Veilguard are as good as what people played at previews? Mark Darrah on GamesYes. I think Act 3 may actually be the strongest of the 3

Apparently, DAVe is advertising itself on old media Will @jocastalavellanshutttt upppp i just got a dragon age the veilguard ad on my tv People also reported to see ads on Twitch and Google Ads.
Although TV ads in the US gotta be mighty expensive, since the election is next month.
Not only in the USA.
I am not sure, if that is a smart move. They musst be carefull with cost vs attention. They need a plus at the end.
