I still enjoy the character arcs of companions I dislike so I'm not worried about them being mandatory. I'm feeling pretty positive about companions being more required in the main plot, contributes to the narrative feel of the party fighting together and needing each other which i like in a party-based game. And it should help mitigate them feeling less prominent in combat. That's fair. I admit Solas' role in the story made him a fascinating companion and romance, as did one of my favourite characters in BG3. I suppose if a character is well written and well acted, even a personal dislike can be overcome when you get to know them. It took me a couple of playthroughs, but even my Lavellan warmed up to Sera in the end.

And it should help mitigate them feeling less prominent in combat. Agreed, for the most part. For me it’s usually a matter of, are they well constructed? Do they have interiority, charisma, specific beliefs, interesting contradictions, idiosyncratic speech patterns, interpersonal dynamics with other companions, philosophical insight? I struggle with Oghren in this regard, and perhaps Zevran a little too, in that it feels like he never really moves beyond his initial premise, maybe as a result of usually joining the team last. And also I just find him repulsive on almost every level, with that repulsiveness mostly played for laughs instead of interrogated. Vivienne is another good example. She has a ton of charisma and is a decent stab at a status quo mage, but you never really get to know her beyond the surface level, and her personal quest with the Duke feels like it could’ve been fleshed out more. I would’ve liked to have the chance to talk with him about Vivienne and get his perspective on her. I don’t kick out or kill any character unless I feel it suits the roleplay. The quality of the writing is the main thing. Inquisition had a lot of flaws but I do think each and every one of the advisors/companions were well written and believable. Andromeda has been the only sub par Bioware game in that regard. Companions had a lot to say without really bringing anything meaningful, or memorable, to the table. Pee Bee was okay though.

I'd argue MEA's characters were better presented than ME1's, but unlike the trilogy they were not given three games to become endeared to the players. Few people actually quote ME1 when it comes to their favorite characters, except Wrex's "Shepard" and Liara's panic, and occasionally Ashley's bigotry. I love Kaidan but he was *so* forgettable in ME1...
The issue is that in both cases, they were just *fine*. Dragon Age was always superior in this regard as each set of characters were very well developed within their own games. ME2 was the only one that came remotely close to Dragon Age's companion presentation quality, and that was only because it *really* leaned into the companions (they were most of the plot).

Well, it's something sparkly. Bianca? Ugh, that gif is breaking my heart. I'd say Varric or Harding, based on the size. This portion of the gameplay trailer has haunted me ever since. I do think it’s Varric. Now what happened between Solas blasting that statue and The Evanuris being awakened is beyond us, as it does appear that portion was edit out. However, I do think if Varric is penetrated by the lyrium blade (which it kind of looks like he is) then that means blood was spilled during the ritual and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how the ritual went sideways. I am hoping Varric isn’t an inadvertent sacrifice. Like, why can’t Varric wake up with us in The Lighthouse? He’s really gonna travel all the way back to Kirkwall before Rook wakes up? Yeah, I can see him leaving the fight after Bianca was destroyed, but I can’t see him abruptly disappearing from the story unless something bad happened to him.

Only Stockholm syndrome could have saved MEA's cast - it's true. Jokes aside, I wouldn't be surprised if MEA companions had more 'content' in one game than most of the MET characters had across all three games. They really had ample chance to endear themselves, and various other Bioware games do prove you don't need a trilogy just to have folks like your characters. In any case, I'm off topic.

There is a wallpaper photo of Lace, Taash and Rook in a subterranean area with a giganticus Dragon in front of them and Taash is wearing what looks like old fashion pirate Bucket-Top boots. The latter were made popular by Hollywood movies, though in practice pirates preferred shoes as they were much more practical and less expensive.
My point is that a) Bio artists ran out of ideas for her outfit or Taash has a sea pirate background and brought the boots with her.. I'm leaning towards b.

A kind DA Fan gave me the heads-up on more details from the #SDCC, including a gameplay reveal.Dragon Age: The Veilguard Unveiled at San Diego Comic-Contempleofgeek.com/dragon-age-the-veilguard-unveiled-at-san-diego-comic-con/Dragon Age: Meet The Heroic Companions of Thedas Panel at San Diego Comic-Con Panel Highlights: Voice Actors & Developers: The panel will feature voice actors behind companions Lucanis, Harding, Emmrich, and Neve, along with BioWare’s John Epler (Creative Director) and Ashley Barlow (Creative Performance Director). Companion Insights: Attendees will gain exclusive insights into the motivations and inspirations behind each unique companion. Gameplay Reveal: A first look at companion gameplay will showcase how relationships and bonds unfold through BioWare’s renowned conversation system.

Event Details: Date: Friday, July 26 Time: 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM Location: Room 6BCF at San Diego Convention Center Giveaway: Attendees will receive a ticket to claim a Dragon Age: The Veilguard poster (while supplies last). Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about one of the most anticipated games of the year! Dragon Age will also be part of the Fandom Party at San Diego Comic-Con!Additionally, The Fandom Party, presented by Electronic Arts (EA), is a must-attend event during convention week in San Diego. This year, attendees will enjoy curated and immersive experiences, including: A Dragon Age-themed scavenger hunt leading to a custom photo booth, to learn more about BioWare and EA’s upcoming single-player fantasy RPG experience Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Dragon Age @dragonageSomething got mixed up in the Fade, and the wrong description was posted initially. 😶🌫️ The panel will be a conversation with our amazing talent and we can't wait to dive deeper into story and characters at SDCC! - So the panel will be just the discussion with the VAs. I'm hoping the panel will either be streamed or posted shortly after. - I'm still hoping there'll be a new gameplay video. We'll see!

Okay, so I have a question for my lore folks. Is it possible for an Elven God to become Tranquil? I can't recall if this has ever been explored before, but I was kind of curious.

Not a lore expert but I imagine it's possible? Probably difficult as they've been in a prison in the Fade for so long and probably very adjusted and attuned to it (and them being gods), but I imagine you can sunder anyone's mind from the Fade when they're in Thedas, even a god!

I can't imagine it's ever come up before, since they were sealed away when the Veil was created and (as far as we know) making people Tranquil relies on that separation between the Fade and the waking world. After that the only people it would have been possible to try it on were Solas who was busy taking a long nap and Mythal/Flemeth. So I guess the only way to know would be if anyone tried to make Flemeth Tranquil and I assume that if they did they were promptly eaten by a big dragon.
As for whether it would work: we don't fully understand what the souls of the Eleven gods are and how they work. We know that Mythal managed to come back after her people 'killed' her so it's possible that they are spirits in some sense. In which case, it's hard to say if it's possible to cut them off from the Fade or what effect it would have on them if you did.

Making someone Tranquil is cutting their connection to the Fade, it should work. The end result might not be quite like when it's done to a lesser mage thought. And if you remove the Veil, it's probably way easier to fix. You would probably have trap them underground.
On a crazy theory tangent, there are Elven/Avvar legend that could hint at Andruil being made Tranquil by Mythal.

Wasn't it already obvious that he was only talking about Rook? I thought so too, but some people took a snippet, reinterpreted it and got annoyed. I thought it was really quite obvious Trick meant that blood magic isn't out the window if the right game comes along.
