Sensitive topic this and I don’t expect people to come forward if they aren’t comfortable discussing this kind of thing, that’s OK by the way! But I was wondering if there are people on here currently battling/living with some kind of mental health disorder and I am basically curious as to how that affects your life on a day to day basis? Cards on the table, I suffer from Body Dysmorphic Disorder and have done since puberty really. It’s a bastard of a mental illness that fucks with how you perceive yourself, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Not a lot of people know I have it as I find it embarrassing and it’s not exactly something that you can spot unless you know about it. But there you go. That’s me. If anybody on here has their own story to tell I’d find that much more interesting and possibly even insightful. Wishing you all good mental health this Christmas!
MODERATOR CAVEAT
It's a brave topic, for civil and considerate posts only. it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that there will be zero tolerance for any nastiness. Thank you. SofaJockey .

As for depression I've had that for a few months ever since I was broken up with. In my eyes everything about me and my life was shit. Negative things, and there were a lot of negative things some if it involving an asshole of an ex friend affected me harshly. I am getting better though, according to a friend I have emotional resilience.
Also I have a panick attack everytime I get a shot. I get dizzy, need to lay on the floor, and throw up. Not fun.

Pessimism is the default position. Optimism is a mental disorder, just like some "dysphoria".

Yes, depression and (to a lesser extent) anxiety. For years, I had depression and was not even aware that I was suffering from it. I chalked up the symptoms to other things, but then they started getting alarmingly bad and I began to suspect it really was depression. In truth, getting the diagnosis from a therapist and then resolving to proactively take my life back was a big first step in the right direction. It's been a little over a decade-long battle for me now and there have been a couple relapses, but I am doing a lot better now than previously. I am not currently taking meds, not because I'm anti-medication in any way and I may elect to take them in the future, but for now I have my reasons for not doing so. In truth, the issue for me may be situational more than pathological. In the meantime I have been employing a variety of different coping methods and am putting together some bold new life plans that I hope will be the final step in truly conquering it.

Depression since my parents divorce at 4 and subsequent abandonment by my father.
OCD since grade school, when as an original "latchkey kid" I was responsible for ensuring the house was locked up as I walked my sister and I to school.
I cannot count how many times I made us double back from halfway there to check the lock. Paranoia, far too much responsibility for a 7 year old.
I self medicate, which is not optimal but somewhat effective (people know when I'm not "taking my medicine"), and have learned to control my OCD mostly, by making procedures for things like leaving the house.
OCD actually is incredibly beneficial for my job (within reason) - attention to detail is crucial when making safe electrical distribution for people to work with and around.
Mental illness - the only shame in it is on the medical profession. It is diagnosed last, ignored or set aside, because of shame. Shame. People need to get over that.

Clinical depression, only officially diagnosed a little over a year ago as it got worse and worse. Yesterday was an incredibly rough day with it. Suicidal thoughts, and attempts in the past. Autism Spectrum Disorder Major social anxiety on top of the social issues I get from autism (yay...) Anxiety over pretty much everything. Pessimist, low self esteem, self hatred. Having to tip toe around practically everyone in the current years of easily offended is making it harder and harder for me, as someone with autism, to go and talk to people. I always expect the worst case scenario and have rarely been wrong about it. I get incredibly scary panic attacks if I get lost. I also rarely leave my house, only when I absolutely have to and never without music. Music and gaming has been my settlers, calming choice. Long history of self harm - bashing my head against things to get relief from all the bottled up emotions. Physical pain for emotional and mental relief. Almost all of my problems can neatly be bundled into that one I have no control over, but can somewhat manage. ASD. Medication helps a bit but is never a fix-it-all. Every single day is a battle and a struggle through it all but even with depression being added in the past year I'm still in a much better place now than I was a decade ago. The past 2 days have been incredibly rough, my mood decided to choose this time to be full on -grumpy, half crying, leave me alone- and it's horrible, my kid doesn't deserve that on Christmas day and I wish I had an 'off' switch, seriously. This has made me spiral and crash land right into self hatred again which I need to focus on crawling out of today. Whenever I talk about mine now is because I am not ashamed, not embarrassed, don't want attention just want to inform people "I'm gonna fuck up this conversation because of all this but I'm really going to try not to, please be patient and bear with me and let me know if I go over the line "

Neither is OP without the other In other words, balance, moderation in all things. I'm not much of an optimist. However, I have learned through experience if you hold on, things usually take care of themselves. Just got to hold on sometimes, even if it sucks.

I'm not really sure what the optimism/pessimism talk refers to in this context, but I do feel compelled to say one thing: I am decidedly not a believer in "positive thinking." I'm not saying people for whom that approach works should stop doing it. Of course you should do what works for you, but as someone who is not naturally "upbeat" and knowing there are many others like me, I do not like it or the way that it's pushed as a one-size-fits-all solution. Rather, tranquility and stoicism are virtues that I've found much more helpful to putting me on a better path. I am a lot happier of a person now by finding contentment in peace, quiet, solitude, etc. (things that I do very, very well) rather than the tiresome pursuit of "joy." Recommended reading: www.amazon.com/Antidote-Happiness-People-Positive-Thinking/dp/0865478015 It gets a bit long and repetitive, but I took away some useful stuff.

I used to be optimistic, but after 14 years of things just getting worse no matter how hard I tried to look on the bright side, I decided to focus more on the present, think of things I could do to make things better instead of convince myself it'll get better on its own, but I refuse to ever let myself think anything is impossible or will end in misery for me.

My sister is a psychologist. Several years back I took an online psych test and it said I was likely Asperger's. I told my sister and her comment was "No shit, Sherlock". I love my family but she is going in the special home when she grows old. Next to me.

Yeah I get like that a lot. When my mental illness is in remission I’m actually a very positive, upbeat person but then it comes back and kicks the shit out of me mentally when I’m never prepared for it. I know some might disagree but I try to hold on to positives sometimes because there are good things in my life even if I don’t see them at the time. It’s easier said than done really isn’t it. How’s everybody getting on this Christmas? I’m usually worse around this time of year, guilt and all that but I’m hoping for some it can bring a bit of a reprieve from the day to day grind.

I'm mourning some losses right now, but my family and friends have helped me enjoy this Christmas for the first time in many years.

I love my family but she is going in the special home when she grows old. Next to me. sounds like some of the conversations ive had …. although most of them were with she who must be obeyed, and she's special enough to keep me mostly stable.... my family otoh can all go jump off a cliff, ive spoken to most of them less than 100 times in the last 20 years and every time we meet up they give me their contact details and then within a week have changed everything.... then have the temerity to complain I never contact them, I mean sure I get it I wasn't the easiest person to live with growing up but really moving house and setting up a new email account and phone numbers so I cant even send you a card twice a year is a bit much.... and then they complained that I'm hard to get in contact with, ive had the same email address and mobile number since 1998, hell ive had the same home phone number for 12 years... and whilst I moved a lot when I was in the army (21 times) it wasn't like I had a choice in that and I always contacted people to let them know..... and apparently I'm the special one cos I told them after the 5th time if it bothers them that much dont even bother giving me the details any more.... try to be accommodating and they treat you like a weirdo... I know I'm special cos I understand that "bloods thicker than water and it stains better too" most folks only ever get the first half of that right....

In reply to your post: Thank you. Yes I got an Xbox One X from my uncle, a leather jacket from my mother and lots of dark chocolate, which is my fav! I'm sorry to hear that. I am sure 2019 will be a better year for many. It seems the last few years have been pretty hard on a lot of people. What I love about the Internet is knowing I'm not alone in my pain and can share and help others.
