I think that after they finally give me my romanceable dwarf (pls BioWare I have been so patient) the next thing I'm going to campaign for a romanceable Fex. Sure, we don't know what they are or what they look like or even if they still exist, but if we romanced one BioWare would HAVE to answer all those questions and I have been deeply curious all these many years. And, I mean, it's either that or a lizard person. Unless the Fex are the lizard people. Which is completely possible.

Hey everyone: would you rather romance one of the lizard people from the Deep Roads or one of the snake people from the moon? (Assuming for the moment that they're not actually the same thing.) Also, which moon do you think the snake people come from? Is one moon sexier than the other?

I don't know guys, I feel like you're ignoring a pretty big precedent. We had the option of encouraging Cole to become more of "a person" and it led to his developing a romantic attachment. But Cole has that unique set of circumstances. From the way people are talking about spirits, and the option of a spirit romance, it seems like the idea is a spirit that maintains their, er, spiritness, as it were. You said it exactly, you encourage Cole "to become more of 'a person'," which leads away from his spiritness. In other words, I don't think Cole's example follows with what folks are thinking of when they say "spirit romance."
[edit] I originally typed "sporits." Can you imagine a spirit of sport? Perish the thought.

It's not that much of a precedent if it's framed as being super unlikely. Repeating such a specific set of circumstances would also be pretty un-Bioware. Still...I feel like it's still an option, even if it's just a friendship taking on a romantic tone (i.e. nonsexual), even if it's only understood that way on the part of the protagonist.

One moon might be sexier than the other, but it's also possible they're simply sexy in different ways. I.e. one in the more active and seductive type of sexy and the other is a slightly less attainable sensual type of sexy. Like the difference between a gorgeous detective and a sultry lounge singer.

Oooooo, good point. That would be very BioWare, given their fondness for contrasting pairs of characters among the love interests. (Like, Morrigan vs. Leliana and Alistair vs. Zevran are very different types of romances.)
I guess the moon we have not even seen after three games is the mysterious, unattainable one.

oh yes! I would definitely romance lizard people. I already love the argonian in Skyrim, and from that one image of the lizard people, they seem to be thiccer. So yes, I would! Now for the snake people, I need more photographic evidence.

Given how many people feel about sport, I am terrified by the possibility that these actually exist.
I can just imagine it: Varric and Blackwall are talking about statistics and Reeve Ara vs. Honorine Chastain and the next moment a spirit pops out of the air and is all 'DID SOMEONE SAY JOUSTING? I JUST LOVE PEOPLE PUSHING EACH OTHER OFF THINGS WITH STICKS!!!'

Definitely, but so far Cole's a bit of a Marty Stu as far as spirits are concerned. EDIT: Also, not sure we've yet seen whether or not Cole is capable of romantic love. But then what do you call his snuggling and flirting with and dating Maryden? Perhaps you could put the goalpost for whether it's actually love as some kind of deeper display, like a sacrifice or something. But surely that establishes at least romantic affection. Does he do all those things? I've only played Trespasser once where he ended up with her... it seemed like they were definitely a pair, but I don't know if he loved her or understood what that meant. He liked her and enjoyed... it almost seemed... "going through the motions" of a relationship so he could experience it. But like Lady A said, it also only happens if he becomes "more human" because if he's "more spirit" she ends up WITH HER RIGHTFUL BOYFRIEND KREM oops okay I might feel somewhat strongly about that.

I think it would show up when people were weeping after losing bets or having their fantasy team crash and burn, and then it would stab them to end their suffering.

He liked her and enjoyed... it almost seemed... "going through the motions" of a relationship so he could experience it. Devil’s advocate, people do that too. The only way to figure out what love is like is to sort of go through the motions first. At the beginning it’s all “I intellectually know it would be socially awkward if we broke up” then only later it turns into “I can imagine our life together”. I mean, I’ve had crushes that started with the second bit, but they’ve never evolved into real relationships. I suppose that’s what’s so appealing about spirit LIs, the idea that they might start in a more cerebral place of “let’s try this just for the experience” (or even to fulfill a demon’s selfish goals re: creating emotions), with love coming at some distant later date, once their lives have gotten tangled together. Basically, like this:

In other news, I agree some particularly complex spirits might be able to form romantic attachments. Maybe spirits of wisdom or old spirits of love who've seen it all.

Outside of the spirit of love, the question is whether those other types are capable of that. Spirits have a singular purpose and function.
Aside from that, as I mentioned earlier, because of the inherent malleability of spirits, I think there are also ethical and moral issues to consider especially if it comes down to romance.
With Cole, even though the ultimate choice is binary, I played it as just allowing Cole to continue on the path he's on. I try not to have undue influence over my followers. Even with Leliana in DAO, I picked the most neutral option in the dialogue, which is essentially, "Do what you think is best."

I know as a straight male I'm supposed to STHU and don't participate in this thread, but considering this forum is supposedly the biggest center of LGBT Bioware fans... the poll results are not very impressive for non-hetero LI fans. Also the quality of romances has been going downward since DA2. Maybe not focusing on Romance can be a better business decision for Bioware. If the quality of romances has gone down, wouldn't it make more sense to focus more on romances?

Also, all this straight talk is boring. Let's talk about something more important - why so little gay/bi guys chose dwarves. Like I get it, no one wants Oghren, and Varric was around for way too long. But Renn? A++ would date this daddy. Damn hot! I would date him as well! I think it comes to exposure. I was trying to come up with a list of characters (not only just Bioware characters) from the four races that I consider hot and it took me more effort to make a list for dwarf characters. My list for attractive humans is very looooong and elves are generally not that different from humans. The qunari from DA2 are super hot already. So yeah, the list for dwarf is, well, dwarfed by others.

Also the quality of romances has been going downward since DA2. Maybe not focusing on Romance can be a better business decision for Bioware. If the quality of romances has gone down, wouldn't it make more sense to focus more on romances? It's a bit difficult to separate romance content from other NPC interaction, I think. By that I mean that there is quite a bit of romance content that exists as alternate dialogue in a standard conversation. Because we got more of that type compared to DA2, which had fixed cutscenes and was more limited overall, DA2 seems "less." I prefer the DAO and DAI method by far, as it makes the interaction feel more natural, like you're getting to know someone. I purposely space out my interrogate dialogues so we have something to talk about throughout the game; DA2 didn't have this option.
I guess I got away from my point, which was to say that I think as far as romances go, DAI was a step up from DA2, and more of a return to DAO as far as character interaction being intertwined with romance.
(Choice of LI is not factoring into my thought process here. I don't even romance anyone in DAO. My point is to reference romance style and method.)

KOTOR, ME1 & 2 and DAO were very good in LI stories, but the decline began with DA2. That's entirely a matter of opinion. I enjoyed DAI's as much if not more than DAO's, whereas I didn't romance anyone in ME1, despite both Ashley and Liara trying desperately to ninjamance me when I was merely being civil to them, and wasn't particularly bowled over by ME2.

OK, getting back on topic ... Now for the snake people, I need more photographic evidence. Alas, there is little firm visual evidence of snake people, or snoeple if you will. Now, this snake person is admittedly not sexy, but keep in mind that it is an under-aged adolescent and not an adult snake person. Those are probably sexier. Or at least taller.
