I'm personally excited for the Remake of the original Final Fantasy VII, but not in the same way as the millions of fans. I am a fan of the "World" of Final Fantasy VII. I say this because I became a fan not from the original game, but from the sequel movie "Advent Children," and the games "Dirge Of Cerberus" & especially "Crisis Core." The original story was always the missing piece. I didn't play Final Fantasy VII back in 1997. I didn't even know about the series in general back then. I would say that the Remake would be the best possible time to experience the original story, and then some (they're adding more to it). Unfortunately, there is a bit of an identity crisis here. If I play the remake, and enjoy the hell out of it, when does the term "fan" become irrelevant, and when does "real fan" come into question? I worry of people accusing me of not being a "real" fan because I never played the original game. What would the reactions be if I considered the remake my favorite (even though I've played only a few Final Fantasy games in my life). I watched the recent E3 footage. The fans cheered during the gameplay trailer. Half of me is excited to play the game (because of how much I enjoy the world of FF7 so far), but the other half is sad because I can never share their enthusiasm completely (because they are more "long-term" fans). What do you think about this?

Don't worry their enthusiasm comes from a great game that they played over 20 years ago. Many consider FF7 the best game in the series. You'll be just as much of a "fan" as they are once you play the remake.

What do you think about this? Who cares what people think. Are they paying your bills? Buying you food? Paying your rent? No? Then f*ck them. As for the remake I have not been up to date with the news. But I did play the original when it was first released back in '97, and I am looking forward to the remake. Though I am not a graphics whore, the original has aged badly as have all PSX games. I do hope the remake gets released on PC since that's my gaming system of choice.

If the game looks good to you, buy it. If you enjoy it, you are a fan. If most OG fans don't like the remake, so be it, they are just fans of the original and not fans of this one.
Personally I wish they were going full ATB, how much I like the new game depends on how fast that ATB bar works and how pause, favorites work. Still it looks pretty damn good so far. But a lot of FF7s fun for me was the weird stuff like grinding enough to defeat the weapons, so weird tactical combinations needed, getting the gold chocobo so I could get to the island for knights of the round, getting all the awesome limit breaks etc. The story wasn't huge but the game-play was deep due to all the hidden mastery stuff in the game, none of which was needed to beat the game. I think they will do the story better this time, the game-play will be fast and probably fun for most but I suspect a lot of the hidden depth will disappear as a artifact of older time gaming.

I'm tempted to get it. It looks gorgeous, and the dialogue sounds more tightly written than you usually hear from JRPGs.
Only Final Fantasy games I ever played more than an hour of were the one with the street urchin wannabe-pilot and the pirate dude voiced by Gideon Emery, and the one about the dumb blonde zero-g upside-down football player with the dancing priestess girlfriend. And I didn't finish either one. The style usually turns me right off. Turn-based combat and 3D animation mostly just don't belong together in my mind.
I've heard VII in particular is really deep and expansive though, with great story and environments and... basically everything good that can possibly be said about a video game.
From the trailer it looks like a genuine labor of love rather than a cashgrab remake, so here's hoping it'll be great even without the nostalgia goggles.

I hate when other "fans" try to play gatekeeper and decide who real fans are, If you enjoy the remake and have fun you're a fan, who cares what people think about you. I say that as someone who got introduced to the Final Fantasy series through 7 as a kid. I really doubt most OG final fantasy 7 fans will care you're a new fan, they'll probably gladly share their excitement with you.
7 Was my favorite final fantasy because of its great story and if they do a good job with the remake I may even end up liking it more. The remake is certainly looking beautiful in the trailers.

I think I played a bit of VII back in the day and dropped it because of some bug that crashed the game somewhere in a casino I think? The only FF game I ever completed, with some tweaks to stop the grind and random encounters toward the end, was FFX. I took a look at some FFXV gameplay and noped out of it. But a remake of VII sounds ok since apparently I was sticking to it up until the bug.

I'm sorry to give you a delusion, but for the time being they are only planning for the PS4 version …. still I also hope they will do a PC version sooner or later. FF7 has been my first and most loved Final Fantasy game and I cannot wait to play again with Cloud and Tifa ….

I was interested in it until I read it's episodic. No, thank you. Sounds like milking it as much as possible. Ugh. Maybe once the story is complete...
I'm one of the few people who played FF7 years later, after 10, not feeling impressed at all. By then the dated graphics made it hard for me to relate to these dolls with sqaures for hands on screen. Never udnerstood the hype about the story. I liked 8 better, the game nobody liked other than those like me whose first FF experience it was.

I just got some hands on time with the demo here at PAX East
The combat sort of felt like a more responsive and manageable version of FFXV combat. I was prone to forgetting how many enemies I was fighting and getting shot from behind while the camera was looking the other way as Cloud. Less so when controlling Barret, you can switch between characters at will but also tell companions to use specific spells/abilities/items at anytime. Otherwise they seem to auto-attack.
Anyway, Barrett’s voice actor was wandering around heckling people good naturedly while I played. He was walking by while Cloud had his head grabbing moment in front of the Mako reacted (now accompanied by a ghostly hallucination of black feathers) and grabbed my shoulders yelling “flashback!” before laughing on. Seems like a friendly guy.

Never played the original.
For that matter, only played FF XV from this series (and was ambivalent about that).
But the reviews and reputation are good, so I'm in.
But I literally know nothing.

Question, I watched a video recently, retelling the main synopsis of the Original FF7. It's under 50 minutes long. The person who uploaded the video was the narrator, and even mentioned the history of the Cetra, or "Ancients," and certain events leading up to the main plot. The entire video sowed clips from the original game. I did this to know the story and events of the original game. I did this because I was conflicted about my position as a fan. I recently finished the Remake (Part 1) and enjoyed every minute of it. As the original, outside of the bombing mission, Nebelhiem, Aerith's death, and the ending, I knew nothing else about the plot. How can I say "I'm a fan of Final Fantasy VII," when if I only knew a small portion of the plot for the original in a conversation? It would be awkward. Hell, I don't even know if I can be considered a fan. I feel as though playing the original is required. But, at the same time there are things it lacks compared to what I experienced in the Remake. Fandom is a complicated subject...
