So far I haven't seen any game that have "meaningful" romances. They all are the same; pick the dialogue best suited for the individual NPC for a few conversations, then get a short scene of the PC and NPC rubbing against each other like lifeless barbie dolls. You are also so right about the demands. That is dumb also, and is another reason to just leave them out of games. Everyone must have representation, and if someone is left out of the mix the game becomes whatever-phobic. I say leave them out totally, It's just less hassle and developers can stop being attacked. They add nothing so nothing is lost. It adds roleplay, and character development (if done well) Though yes, awkward rubbing is a waste of resources, imo. Sooner or later, we'll get complains about what sexual positions are used and DEMANDS for different ones... Look, I don't give a fuck about sex scenes, but if you're going to do lesbian sex scenes, you should probably know what lesbian sex looks like. Jus sayin.

I play games on the hardest difficulties just for damn achievements It sounds like you would be doing things you don't want to do just for achievements regardless of whether romances were present or not? I know I sided with the Templars in DA2 only for the achievement. I ended up hating that Hawke. Well, yeah. But it doesn't negate the fact I don't like them and that they're irrelevant. That was the whole point of my first post, explaining what I thought about them. Then it just turned into this thing of people telling me why romances do matter. It isn't like romances will ever be taken out of games, no matter how much I hope for it. People here just need to chillax about differing opinions.

Not everyone cares to watch sex scenes. I prefer fade to black because I don't want my character's sex life dictated by the devs. Headcanon and my own fanfic is just fine for me.

To complete my games. That's why. I don't want to do them, but in order to platinum most of my RPGs, I have no choice. You probably don't care about achievements but I do. I play games on the hardest difficulties just for damn achievements. Everyone has different reasons why they play games. and collecting achievements is one of mine. I just bought Greedfall, and it's crazy that I have to romance 4 different characters just to platinum my game. They are not challenge based, nor are they story based achievements, plus they add absolutely nothing. Okay. So, when a game doesn't have any acheivements, how do you decide when it's complete? Or do you avoid games that don't have that feature? What do you do if an acheivement involves being, say, the top scorer in a multiplayer mode, something you might potentially never acheive? LOL this is a reason why I buy my PC games on steam and not epic. Show me a game with no achievements in today's industry. Also I do multiplayer achievements when I actually buy a multiplayer game. Even if a achievement seems out of reach, it doesn't stop me from trying to achieve it. It's not like it's the end of the world, I still have multiple games I still have to platinum. The point is I still try to do them.

This is a public forum whose purpose is, ostensibly, to discuss opinions. You gave yours, people disagreed, and the forum's purpose is thus fulfilled. Claiming that others can't stand differing opinions because they dare disagree with statements you made publicly is deeply ironic. "I don't like romances" is a presumably factual statement of taste, not an opinion, so it cannot be argued against. But that's not all you said. "Romances are meaningless/irrelevant" is an opinion, and therefore contentious. It's the difference between "I'm not interested in football" and "Football is a stupid way to pass the time." Don't be surprised when people argue against the latter in a space specifically designed for just such debate. As for achievements, I reckon two reasons for someone to want to accumulate them: completitionism (which is a bad habit) and a desire to prove their gamer cred through arbitrary status symbols (which is a character flaw). Now, we all have bad habits and character flaws, but that doesn't render collecting achievements any more meaningful than any other type of hoarding. Even if romances were all about the virtual porn, as you insist, that would still make them more "meaningful" than achievements. After all, wanting to get off, as most people do, is not a bad habit nor a character flaw. Taking the high ground is rather difficult when you have no leg to stand on. Hence my amusement earlier. At any rate, this whole attitude that "romances are meaningless" is merely symptomatic of the bizarre double standard they are held to. RPG friendships are no deeper or more involved than romances. Games are abstractions, people are complex, and I've yet to see any RPG whatsoever wherein human relationships weren't depicted at least somewhat simplistically. There's little reason to single romances out; I imagine the impulse to do so is cognate with the trend of disparaging romance novels despite their being the most popular literary genre.

There's little reason to single romances out; I imagine the impulse to do so is cognate with the trend of disparaging romance novels despite their being the most popular literary genre. Firstly I didn't say people can't stand differing opinions. I said they just need to chillax. Those 2 words do not mean the same thing. One consist of someone being intolerable of something, the other insist someone being calm. I've been on this forum since it first opened and came from the old BW forums. I know how things work. Also how is being a completionist a bad habit? I don't want to prove my gamerscore to anyone. I just like having all the achievements, that's what they are there for, to collect. Being a collector of things is not a character flaw. Gaming is a hobby, and collecting achievements is part of that. Now this just harkens back to me saying people need to chillax. You're trying to attack my character because I like to collect my achievements in games, and at no point during discussion did I need to prove my "gamer cred" I even stated in a reply that "It's not the end of the world if I don't collect every achievement." But Just because I do so,doesn't mean I have bad character. I also didn't say romances is "all about virtual porn" So please, stop putting words in my mouth. I said that: players are just rewarded with a softcore porn sex scene after they pick certain dialogue options." Which is true. People can get off to whatever they want, I don't care, and I'm certainly not taking the high road on anything and never said that I was. If people want to jerk it to video games, more power to them. They can go at it as much as they like. So I don't know where you got this assumption that I think somehow "I'm takin the high road." I haven't criticized anyone. Lastly, my "impulse" to single out romance has nothing to do with romance novels. LOL I have no opinion on them; don't read them. My reason I don't like romance in games, is just because I don't like romance period. Be it in games or life. I think it's just nonsense.

So regardless of the entertainment medium, you don't want any romance depicted? There are innumerable examples of movies and so on where the guy gets the girl at the end. You consider the Han/Leia romance, or Thor/Jane, or Superman/Lois to be pointless additions to those films? If you wanna talk about character motivation, in Superman 2, he flies around the planet to reverse time in order to save Lois's life! Now that's love!

Romances are optional. Achievements are optional. Why begrudge romances to other players because you feel "forced" to do an achievement?
I like obtaining achievements, but I see no value in toiling for an achievement if I get no entertainment out of it.
Why do an achievement if you know you won't enjoy it?
Couldn't you consider a goal of obtaining all "worthwhile" achievements and skip the "nonsense" achievements?

I would try to go with something more meaningful. Unfortunetly my mind went completly blank on romances from movies.

Romances are optional. Achievements are optional. Why begrudge romances because one feels "forced" to do an achievement? I try to do most achievments and I prefer games to have a romance option in them. That said the "achievments" thing can become an OCD thing which I sympathize with. That said Most games that have romances in them only have one achievment involved for romances and that is doing one of them. ME1,ME2,ME3 all have this.

It adds roleplay, and character development (if done well) Though yes, awkward rubbing is a waste of resources, imo. Sooner or later, we'll get complains about what sexual positions are used and DEMANDS for different ones... Oh I so want to see someone "demand" different sexual positions. It would just be so funny. I mean I could just hear that bioware is against against certain types of relationships because they don't have anyone doing some position.
Seriously though. Imagine someone going WE DEMAND REVERSE ...I will leave this incomplete.

I'm not really a movie person. Superhero stuff really don't interest me, and the damsel trope where the man gets the woman in the end is exhausting and worn out and uninteresting. Hell my favorite movie of all time is the professional, a classic with no romance. A simple action flick with great characters. I spend majority of my free time reading medical journals online, or volunteering at my local fire department if I'm not working. So my only hobby is video games when I have time. So if romances are depicted in movies, I don't care, because I don't really watch them. Plus I have the fast forward button, so that always help as well.

If they do that one again, at least have enough options for every group of people unlike MEA before the Jaal patch.

There are so many games out there (as in, most of them) with your 'no romance' that I don't see why you'd want it taken out of the games that do have it. Just go play those other games. That would be like me saying I wish there was no combat in games because I don't enjoy that part and take it out so I can have more conversations with my followers.

I don't "Begrudge" you because you do. Nor do I feel forced to get the achievements for them, I just like collecting the achievements, and I wish I didn't have to do romances in order to collect all the achievements. There are so many games out there (as in, most of them) with your 'no romance' that I don't see why you'd want it taken out of the games that do have it. Just go play those other games. That would be like me saying I wish there was no combat in games because I don't enjoy that part and take it out so I can have more conversations with my followers. Well I enjoy RPGs, what can I say lol. I don't play any other genre, because RPGs are usually the type that are narrative driven. I like games for their stories, and I just think the romance part is weak, and fruitless when it comes to character building. Combat in most RPGs is a necessity, to drive the story or to show conflict. Whereas romances are not. They don't drive stories in most games, or aren't the central focus of the narrative. Like I said before they are only a ploy for cheap emotional connections to characters, which can be done better by adding more character motivations and making characters more involved with the central plot. Rather than having a romance that adds nothing to the overall story, or having it end right after the player unlocks the sex scene. They are laughably shallow.

Some of the romances are pretty badly written, this is true. I think overall though they can definitely add to the story.

Sure they can add more story. But those stories are never intertwined with the overall plot that's going on. They are never portrayed as being important, they are mainly a side thought that is forgotten by the character the player is romancing right after you get the sex scene. They don't drive anything within the story. They only are there to drive the player's emotion, but in a easy and cheap way. I just can't help but roll my eyes when I'm sitting through them. Games like Last of us or God of war did character and relationships beautifully without romance. But then when last of us released left behind and showed the relationship between Ellie and Riley, It didn't bother me. Because it was subtle, it wasn't marketed, and it added to the main plot of the narrative. I know this game isn't an RPG, but it's the only example of a romance that was done right and I had no problems with it. The fact is the majority of these romances are cheap ploys.

... they are mainly a side thought that is forgotten by the character the player is romancing right after you get the sex scene. This is the Dragon Age forum and this thread is specifically about Bioware and their romances. You might not like romance in games over all, but this criticism does not apply to Dragon Age romances. All but two of the romances, Morrigan and Solas, have scenes during the climax of the game that show the romance continuing on and the character very much emotionally invested in the relationship. Even with Morrigan and Solas, there is later dialogue that establishes either a continuing relationship (Morrigan) or reminiscence of the relationship past (Solas*). Where appropriate, and where imports allow, we see that these relationships are still going after several years.
* I'm not exactly sure of what all is said to Lavellan during his Trespasser dialogue, but I know he didn't simply forget about the relationship.
