This game should be called Dragon Age: The Elven Gods Did It. What they did to the Qunari is really atrocious. I blame all my evil deeds across DA on the Elven Gods. Selling Connor to the desire demon in exchange of sex, decimating the Dalish and siding with the werewolves, recruiting Loghain and allowing Alistair's execution, siding with the Cult of Andraste, doing the Dark Ritual with Morrigan, siding with the Architect and killing Sigrun... ALL of it. Their fault. The damm knife ears.

I'm watching my friend right now play, and she is having a heart attack seeing what they did to Dorian lol. My goodness I didn't know it was that bad.

Regarding a past character who makes an appearance: This is Dorian in human form. Do you see? This is Dorian changing. Do you see? This is Dorian reborn. Do you see?

So um, pretty interesting way of revealing stuff to the player Bioware. Not that new players would care for this but still bizarre to me. Spoilers about an Act 2 quest and the prologue of the game. Solas just revealed to me in a background argument he was having with Elgar'nan that at least Sylaise, June, Dirthamen are dead. And that probably includes Andruil and Falon'Din too. lol
I just ask you, how did this happen? Killing the Archdemons does not kill the Evanuris, this game itself told me during the Siege of Weisshaupt.
Did Solas kill them during his ritual? But the ritual was just to move them to another prison. I am really lost here.
It is also pretty lazy to just kill the others like this and shrug it off as if it was nothing. Not that I would want 5 Corypheus remaining for Bioware to play with, but it is still LAZY.

Anyone else notice how the game wants to recap the story all the time? Not just the characters constantly reminding you and each other, you have the window on the left that appears after you chose a piece of dialogue, you have the big unskippable window of text after every main quest, you have the Varric DA2 murals (even though they're actually pretty good)... Like, the amount on hand holding is crazy and distracting.
Off topic but also:
Cora's "I'm an Asari huntress" is Lucanis' "I like coffee" in this game. He literally won't stop talking about it and it drives me mad.

Weekes has already done it before in the Masked Empire with his treatment of the Dalish clan in that book. It was one-dimensional surface level there, it is here.
I suppose it is fair to say that's just his way of writing things. Solas in DAI says that most Dalish clans are different, but he acts like meeting one that didn't believe all his truths about the ancient elves is enough to treat Lavellan and all the other Dalish with scorn. I have an interesting update on that story Solas gave us about that clash with a Dalish clan: You won't believe this but he told Rook that the reason they chased him off was because he convinced them he was the Dread Wolf! Now either he is lying through his arse again or I have to wonder whether we are seriously meant to believe this? I actually wrote a fan fiction episode with this clan and my take on it was that he tried to rubbish the gods, they asked why they should believe him and he came out with his usual line of "I saw it through communing with spirits in the Fade". Now WoT said that the Dalish are somewhat wary of messing with spirits, so I had the Keeper chasing him out of camp as a potential health hazard. Now it seems I will have to revise my story to him claiming to be Fen'Harel and the Keeper chasing him out of camp as a crazy apostate who is obviously possessed. I am glad that Rook gets some other perspectives on the past than Solas' memories because you can't believe a word he says and his memories are likely equally corrupted. When Weakes is writing in Dragon Age I now think Weakes is channeling his inner Solas. Weakes depicts the world as Weakes would like it to be, not as it actually was depicted right up until Weakes entered the writing team. Also, small extra note, I've been watching the Taash romance. Has Weakes got a thing about necking? First Iron Bull and now Taash.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a lore explanation as to why warriors seem to have magical abilities in this game? Luckily it's cool, so it's not a deal breaker, but why?

There was a scene where Taash says "The Qun is not a prison, you can leave when you want." The Qun has re-education camps and magically lobotomizes you. Sure, you can leave whenever you want … if you don’t mind being Tal-Vashoth, who are to be killed on sight. It's clearly deliberate by tassh's writer weekes, not like it’s some accidental slip. Trying guess why he has suddenly got a burning hatred for the lore about the Qun. Weekes’ story in Tevinter Nights, *Three Trees to Midnight*, had some serious flaws when it came to the lore around the Qunari. I think it’s clear Weekes wants the Qun to be an entirely different religion than what was presented in past games.

About the Blight corruption again. I think it is safe to say that the Blight and the Taint have been retconned to something that is only dangerous until you destroy the "source". And in this game the sources are those glowing red growth blob things. I just exploded a really big one for a quest and two GREY WARDENS told me that thanks to that, the flowers and plants of the village will be able to grow again. Which goes completely against the lore of even DAI. Remember what happened to the Western Approach? Why exactly is it that a place that was once a forest turned into a desert? lol why even bother talking about this anyway.

So, a common criticism I'm seeing is that the game is lacking edge and is too fluffy and cuddly, and since the writing team for this game was largely the same as in DA:I, with some folks working on DA:O way back when, I wonder to what extent this might be down to Weekes' leadership. Because Weekes is the guy who wrote this, admittedly many years ago, but I see little reason to think his storytelling philosophy has changed. Gaider, by contrast, is the guy who liked to brag of his love of the fandom's tears.

Well, I caved and got VG. The immediate issue I have - this game doesn't support a PS controller. What? I'm on PC, but this doesn't feel like a K&M game so I plugged in the controller I have. How hard is it to swap xyba with PS buttons. Never had that issue in any other modern PC game that supports controllers, feels bizarre, but ok, I'll rewire my brain, I made a little sticky note to help me. But seriously, wtf?
As for the game itself, I'm only starting, but:
-did people seriously sing praises about the CC? It's basic. It's what any other current game with a CC does. -characters are talking while I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing, I haven't got a clue what was said, ok, that's probably on me, but not a very smooth introduction. -I intentionally made the least lore-related character I could, a Lord of Fortune human warrior guy, and so far he doesn't feel terribly out of place, which is good, I kind of feel like I'm playing as Madmartigan. -nothing feels intuitive, I'm button mashing, but maybe it's the controller issue.
Overall, too early to form an opinion on the game itself, but I feel like the gameplay will take getting used to, and that it's not explained very well despite the incessant popups. Maybe I'm just too old.

Report from the trenches: - Lowered graphics settings some more to avoid burning out my graphic card (got to upgrade my gear as well as my bandwidth); - Figured out how to speed through fights ... Really not feeling it, but at least now I can progress from exposition dump A to 'feel good' session B; - Made it to the Lighthouse. The set designs and environments are quite good so far. Frankly, the only element that vaguely reminds me of DA; - The score is serviceable - nothing memorable like the opening notes of Origins, Hawke's theme in DA2 or the uplifting or haunting tracks of Inquisition; - Neve acts like an adult - as opposed to Harding... - Business-like is how I'd describe her voice acting - which can come across as flat and monotone - but vastly preferable to cloyingly "sweet" & "nice" (this spoiler business is irritating) ----- Oh, and here's Damian:

I believe my rook is a football player in disguise. At time's when talking to whoever, she is shaking her arm's loose and jumping up and down getting ready to go back on the field.
I would say the most annoying thing is the commentary from the companions when fighting. To you left. To your right. Incoming range. Good shot rook. Good job everyone and other comments. That explains why they do very little damage. They're looking at the enemy to see what that enemy is going to do then let me know when to avoid damage. And/or they like watching me constantly dodge and run. They do some damage when ordering a combo, but otherwise, they're like the squadmates from MEA

HOT! He looks great, congrats! I really struggled with the head morph for ages and wasn't sure I'd manage anything remotely appealing to me like the Rook from the gameplay demo. But I'm still super happy with his look. Not so much with the faction clothing. How do you fuck up pirate outfits this badly? The fashion in this game is an absolute freak show to me except the veiljumpers maybe. Oh well. I haven't made much progress because my old dog suffered partial leg paralysis all of a sudden yesterday and I'm a panicked mess. But on the other hand talking about Veilguard helps me not lose it completely. Hopefully X-rays tomorrow won't tell us that it's so bad he needs to be put down. I was told it can heal, the body fusing the vertebrae together to allow less painful mobility. I hope this is the case. He's old but I thought we still had some time left.
