This showed up. Take this with a shitload of salt but the guy doesn't strike me as obvious "WOKE, WOKE, EVERYTHING IS WOKE! grifter. ( though he obviously criticizes it) TLDR: Game sold around 3 million copies while EA projections were 10 million. Potential mass layoffs coming soon, but also major shake up away from personal agenda from leads to more gamer oriented. 3 million wouldn't surprise me. Was estimating it to have sold 1-2 million at launch, so 3 million in 3 months leading up to XMAS seems reasonable. Also that could be a sell through number which means sold to retailers to stock up for XMAS shopping, so the figure passes the pub test IMO. It's a shame this person couldn't identify the difference (if his source is actually legit). So this is why Bioware will be better off downsizing to a AA studio. 3 million after 3 months for a AA studio with a AA budget would be pretty darn good and cause for celebration

Game sold around 3 million copies while EA projections were 10 million EA projections are obviously irrelevant. Something around 2 millions actually corresponds to an estimate based on the player numbers on Steam, and 3 millions is not too far out of error margin of the estimate. Once it gets into EA Play and/or Play Plus, they will probably add all Play/Play+ users to these numbers to look better and less embarrassing. As the game gets deeper discounts, it'll get out better and might eventually break even with the development costs after 8-12 months. So, it is unlikely to become a complete financial disaster but won't bring in a noticeable profit as well. Overall, seems about right.

This confirms my theory that Veilguard needs to sell 4-7 Million copies to break even.

If their projections were 10 mill, and they only got 3 mill, how is that anything except an absolute failure?

And why can't a great story be included with the representation? Because representation equals a great story, obviously. You're supposed to be so happy for representation that you turn a blind eye to any flaws in the narrative or headcanon the hell out of them, like, " this is surely meant to mean that, they just wanted me to think!"

Of course it's not a failure, at least on BioWare's part. It's a failure on your part. Gamers are the problem! And they've been standing in the way of the modern audience for far too long. Just you wait. It'll sell 100 million and you chuds will be put in your place. No crow on my fork, fools!

I it very hard to believe anything this video says even if the guy sounds extremely level headed for a YouTuber dealing with the topic.
I'm honestly not aware of how much modern games usually do but 10m sounds like unreasonable expectations on EA part

Didn't Inquisition sell 12 million copies? It took 10 years to do that. 10 million copies in 3 months is way too much (if leak is true, always best to treat these sorts of leaks as sus)

Three million in sales sounds about right, and I doubt it will go any higher. I’ve been periodically checking Steam charts and DATV is now averaging less than 10,000 concurrent players on a daily basis. Twitch streams are also drawing in less than 1,000 viewers.
Simply put, with no DLC planned, Veilguard has nowhere to go but down.

There's very little replayability, considering how there is only one major choice with any real variance...and it doesn't ultimately change a whole lot in the scheme of things.

They do add things with each new patch, but I don't know if it's enough to keep players engaged. Doubtful.
I know they didn't plan any DLC, but they could still make some couldn't they?

I read that article. It seems like they wanted to see what would happen if they only included a few choices from a previous DA game to find out how well it would do. Similar to MEA. I believe that game was only made to see how well it would do without the Milky Way and Shepard. That would be a rather expensive market study don't you think? It's not like Bioware has an endless supply of funds to botch two games just to study trends...

Let's not forget this is a total figure, all platforms combined, including what was bought by and shipped wholesale to retailers. For all we know most of those 3M units are sitting on store shelves collecting dust. The player count on Steam is far to low to account for 'millions' of customers. And the word of mouth surrounding it online is quite negative - outside the small circle of (fanatical) enthusiasts. Compare this to BMW, another action game, which released last August, sold 10M units in 3 days and still has a concurrent player count of 70k daily on average, with a peak of almost 2,5M after launch. Now *that* is what you call a resounding success.

I know they didn't plan any DLC, but they could still make some couldn't they? Theoretically, but unlikely. The planning of DLC and at least a fair chunk of development usually occurs pre-release. This is why Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League still had four major post-release updates despite bombing commercially and critically; that content was mostly done already. It’s also why Rocksteady couldn’t pivot to make the DLC content less cringy.

They're trying anything to win old fans back, it's quite pathetic really. Dialogue Options Wheel a) slam the door shut in their face b ) encourage them heartily to apply their strengths in a different industry c) use Mr Burns returning employee backdoor to let them through You have used C. How do you wish to proceed next? a) offer them free pamphlet for the creative writing courses and kick them out b ) advice them to play DA Origins and politely open the door for them to exit the building c) press THE button

Black Myth Wukong? 10 Mil is high, but I could see why they would go for it. 10 year awaited sequel, prequel with highest sales of any Bioware game plus no real competition in almost entire year. With bad reception AND sales, this pretty much eliminates any possibility of sequel to Veilguard.

I see it's already on a 35% discount on Steam, that too is often indicitative that the game sales have been less than ideal. It's quite hefty discount too for such a new game.
