I just don't see it hurting the developers and it might be a disappointment for them, but I don't see them losing because of it. Triple A development is an incredibly tight financial space. Don't make enough money and the company closes, is sold, or has reduced projects which, yes, hurts the developers. At the end of the day Rowling gets paid and doesn't need the money anyway. A boycott could ruin the gaming studio leaving developers out of work. It's very obvious who a boycott hurts more With my personal history I rather see a developer have to find work then feel like I am giving money to a person like Rowling no matter how indirectly. A lost job can be overcome, but there are things that happen with the people Rowling is attacking that cannot be undone.

I don't agree. I'd rather not punish a bunch of innocent people for what someone who's barely involved in the project says. But let's talk about the Rowling backlash. There's a backlash against Rowling because of how she portrayed trans people in her new book which features a trans serial killer. Trans people are saying Rowling is saying "don't trust a man in a dress" with her new book. The African America community must be facepalming at the moment, because Hollywood has been portraying African American people as evil villains/criminals for decades in what could be described as one of the more noticeable parts of systemic racism. American culture has been implying "don't trust African Americans" since the beginning of television. Even the Original Lion King, Scar was a darker colour with black hair contrasting with Simba's lighter skin and red hair. Gang members and thugs are disproportinally portrayed by African Americans. In film over 60% of gang members were black, in real life maybe 30% are. All of this is Hollywood telling the community what African Americans are like (using the same logic) and is what African Americans have been complaining about for a long time. The double standards being portrayed are jaw dropping. Australian bookstores are boycotting Rowling's books. Fair, bookstores can do as they wish and it's directly impacting Rowling. For this game, which takes part in Rowling's world but hasn't involved Rowling whatsoever, I don't mind supporting this product the same way I would have no problems enrolling my children in a school that buy Charles Dickens books even though he's a wife abuser.

MODERATOR POST
Political discussion is allowed when it relates to a game, so the discussion is currently fine and doesn't break any rules. If however you feel a rule has been broken, don't hesitate to report the post so we can take a look. Cussing each other out in thread, however, is tacky. You're all better than that

I've been reading reactions to this game online and most people don't give a crap about what J.K. Rowling might or not have said unless you go to places that already hated her for it. Most people have only read the 7 HP books and nothing she did after, nor are they stalking her twitter. They are in it because it is Harry Potter, not because it's going to give more money to J.K. Rowling via license royalties. Beside we don't know the licensing deal between W.B. and her, it's possible she gets a flat amount every year for things she didn't work directly on not a % of sales. That means not buying the game might change nothing to what she gets, it only put financial stress on W.B. and the devs.
Anyway back to the reactions I read, this game is going to make banks...and then Avalanche will either be destroyed or worshipped depending on how bad or good it is.

I mean...I love the first one, I'm 50/50 on the second just...look at Frank (yes Newt named the Thunderbird Frank...and I love it ) I would agree, I think the first Fantastic Beasts movie probably was good enough to be considered a success. It might not have resonated as well, but it was successful. From what I have seen the second Fantastic Beasts was not liked nearly as much and could be a problem for the third movie.

Question - have there been any HP spin offs that haven't disappointed? Maybe the London play? The Fantastic Beasts book (the lore one) and the first movie based on Newt Scamander (can't talk about the second one, I haven't watched it yet). Some people don't like it, but I think it did justice to the setting and I liked it. Does the jelly beans count as a spin-off? And the chocolate frogs? Games until this one were all low budgets cash-in movie/book adaptations. The rest of the stuff suffer the same syndrome as Star Wars with Disney: they think they can't have success unless they milk the known characters and stories instead of the setting being a garden. The spin-offs also miss the mark in term of "feels". Harry Potter is the school years at Hogwarts. It's a coming of age story. It's mysteries, wonders, adventures, friendships, rivalries. You lose something once you move to adulthood. It's like if you did an Alice in Wonderland sequels but with Alice being an adult. It doesn't work unless it's a big metaphor for taking LSD.

The play is weird. I saw it on broadway. The story is crap, but the production values are phenomenal. The Cursed Child? That’s the one. It’s a story that makes you realize that Rowling was right to make sure the time travel devices were all smashed in book 5. Introduces too many problems.

Eh, making a contest which discriminated group has it the worst doesn't help. In the build-up for FB, she also got called out by various Native Amercian groups for her " Magic in North America" as well as the back story of Ilvermorny. Essentially, it was seen as her lumping together Native groups, getting things wrong hollywood-style and setting up real-life beliefs who are under constant threat of disappering as "magical". Plus the whole "wands are needed for advanced magic, but they come from europe" and of course starting and focusing her history take almost entirely on a group of settlers. Now, some might argue that "it is all fictional", but the thing is that Rowling's writing has far more influence and media coverage than the Natives who can be trusted to actually know their own culture. It is one hell of a fandom to get your studio on. Question - have there been any HP spin offs that haven't disappointed? Maybe the London play? Fantastic Beasts?
I mean...I love the first one, I'm 50/50 on the second Leta was wasted. Question - have there been any HP spin offs that haven't disappointed? Maybe the London play? Potter Puppet Pals I saw the first, it was good but nowhere near the magic of the main series, for me anyway. The games are all crap right? they are but the good kind of crap

I just watched that game being played, but I like the unique (i.e. non-film) castle layout. And the snappy plants and "dakka bushes". There's also Malfoy's bludger-shitting broom and how casually Hagrid sends Harry to do lethal stuff for him with a "shoooo" gesture. Ahhh, Snape bullying. 500 points from Gryffindor. The play is weird. I saw it on broadway. The story is crap, but the production values are phenomenal. The Cursed Child? I just read the script of CC and it is a bit like a fanfiction. The father-son relations as well as the way how the two boys interact is pretty good, but the time-travel plot... ugh. Guys, JRK did not have all the time-turners destroyed in OotP for nothing. If it would have been done in the style of a non-serious Doctor Who episode, it may have worked better.
@mods: could you please get rid of the death threat and follow-up?

Yeah Cursed Child was really enjoyable to watch on Broadway but the plot is a mess. I still recommend it to people just because the production is that good though.

Fantastic Beasts?
I mean...I love the first one, I'm 50/50 on the second 1) Leta was wasted. they are but the good kind of crap
though to be fair I only ever finished the first one it's so bad and yet so hilarious
2) I just watched that game being played, but I like the unique (i.e. non-film) castle layout. And the snappy plants and "dakka bushes". There's also Malfoy's bludger-shitting broom and how casually Hagrid sends Harry to do lethal stuff for him with a "shoooo" gesture. Ahhh, Snape bullying. 500 points from Gryffindor. 1) yeah, she was...she sure was Would've liked her to have some development in further installments, like...maybe one of few members of the LeStrange family not completely insane
2) I remember how my brother would help me beat the final level because I was so scared of Voldemort, at one point he taught me how to do it myself and I was so proud when I finished it on my own the first time (I mean...I was like, 10/11 or so?) I used to watch my brother play a lot of games when I was younger...like the PoP Sands of Time trilogy (they're remaking the first one) then at one point we each got our own pc and we stopped doing that
...I wonder if he'd even pick this game up when it's going to be released (I mean, the last game we both bought and liked was Skyrim...)

Fantasy authors mucking up historical aspects is really nothing new or surprising. I guess the only new thing is she mucked up Native American culture instead of European culture *shrugs* Sure it isn't. As I said, the difference is scope and representation. If JRK would start to paint Jesus as a wizard or something, sure some christians would explode (yes, I know some already do because HP sells better than the Bible among certain demographics. ), but they are strong and vocal enough that JKR's interpretation would never risk to override theirs. On the other hand, I've read of a case of a teacher going "Can't wait to learn something about you people" towards a native student when Rowling released her writ. The parents then facepalmed and pointed out that Cherokee libraries are actually a thing. 1) yeah, she was...she sure was Would've liked her to have some development in further installments, like...maybe one of few members of the LeStrange family not completely insane

Speaking of which... JRK apparently does not like if some of her fans interpret her writing differently than she does. Of course, some fans are weird, but apparently she called Draco irredeemable at one point. Sure, he's an ass, but it was JKR herself who gave him more nuance and actual development in the HBP. At least Newt is not a Gryffindor. 2) I mostly get my ideas from watching, but that does not mean I'll adopt all games I see. Like I'm too dumb to play platformers, so PoP and Tomb Raider are reduced to films. I suppose that you two got Skyrim back in 2011?

1) psh...what about Regulus and Slughorn then?
anyways I've gone to just ignore everything she (JK) writes and just keep my love of the series itself. I mean, at one point she apparently tweeted the Hufflepuffs have orgies in the common room...I was like, WTF?! plus a lot of other crazy stuff...but as I said, I just ignore everything she wrote that came after the books. 2) yeah we did...he's the one that told me to get Oblivion back in the day as well, we shared that game back then which was quite annoying I remember one time I accidentally saved over one of his saves and he had to redo the entire game (seeing as we both used one save slot each)
