A remaster of DAO would be nice. I never played DA2 Why not? You're missing out. Honestly DA2 is my favourite of the franchise. Same! 90% of the locations you visit are the same I know this is a common complaint, but all of ME1's side missions use the same few maps over and over again too, and no one seems to mind or even notice.

A remaster of DAO would be nice. I never played DA2 To me, DA2 was well-written but very grim. It was like the end of Empire Strikes Back with Han Solo frozen in carbonite and being shipped off to Jabba the Hut. I've actually heard some say Empire was the best written of the original trilogy so there we have it. Once I got past the lack of the Warden not being voiced, I realized it was an amazingly well-written game. Really came to love it. I do like DAI but it's focus was more on being pretty than being well-written. That doesn't even account for the Hinterlands. It was greatly written…until Trespasser ruined it.

I know right! For me at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where the mission takes place, it’s all about the characters and the emotion of the current storyline. I really don’t care whereabouts it’s taking place. I remember getting into quite a few barnstormers about this on the old BSN back in the day - good times!

It's why I consider ME1 a chore to play...9 times out of 10 the only reason I'll replay 1 is because I want race around in the Mako and battle thresher maw.

Yeah I minded tbh the only reason why I don't moa nto omuch about it is the fact that ME1 is quite short compared with the rest of the trilogy which helps make it less of a chore. At leas teachof the main quests had unique environments which helped make up for it.

In Mass Effect 1 I'd argue it makes sense though, it's a pulpy frontier science fiction vibe that it's got after all, so I don't mind the prefab buildings myself.
More difficult to rationalize in fantasy.

I love parts of the sequel, it had a lot of potential, I see nothing in Inquisition though.
Origins remains the only one worth replaying sadly.

trinity0 if you go in with tempered expectations (as in, not expecting it to be DAO) I think you can enjoy playing DA2 as well. Pick it up during a sale and give it a go, most of the criticism in the end boiled down the game daring not to be DAO. To me the only really valid criticism is the repeating areas (which was actually true of DAO as well, they just hid it better) and the tacitics being streamlined (less options, not being able to pick armors for companions, etc).

More difficult to rationalize in fantasy. I think it makes less sense in ME1. It's not that there are prefabs everywhere, it's that they are the exact same prefabs. The only differences are where the supply crates and bunkbeds and stuff like that are located. It's like every government and merc group in the galaxy bought the exact same prefab model and the exact same bunker floorplan from Milky Way Architecture, Ltd. because they happened to be on sale, and then plunked them down all over the place. At least in Kirkwall, when you go into the sewers for the umpteenth time, it looks the same because you're literally going to the same place in the same city. Of course it looks the same.

The first sibling death in DA2 remains one of the greatest achievements of unintentional comedy in gaming. There is no time to develop a bond with your family, and the sibling's death seems to happen on a completely random brain fart or whatever caused him or her to charge the darkspawn on their own. No foreshadowing, no nothing.
It's like wandering down the sidewalk with a bunch of strangers when suddenly one of them pulls a brown paperbag over his head, giggles and capers into the oncoming traffic, and everyone else suddenly stares at you, expecting you to care somehow while you're wondering wtf you just watched.
That said, DA2 can be great fun with the right party (Varric, Isabela and Aveline for me, I'm not into playing the party therapist) with some genuinely funny banter. Just don't let the waves of enemies charging from the room you thought you cleared 30 seconds ago bother you, you should have checked that closet after all.
Give DA2 a shot, it has its moments.

In essence identical caves in complete opposite ends of the map bother me more than identical prefab buildings.
I'd love to see a mod for each that varied them up more though.
Particularly for Mass Effect.

If you knwe the preson suer but I think as players we didn' thave a bond with those characters a tthat point as we'd only been playing 5 minutes. No, I would definitely still find it traumatizing to watch a total stranger run into traffic and die. Why would that be funny? I'm not saying that the opening of DA2 is traumatizing to me, but I think that comparison was pretty bizarre to begin with and that is what I was commenting on. It would have been nice to spend time with Hawke's family before this scene, but I also don't find it that difficult to put myself in Hawke's shoes and understand why this scene is horrible for him/her, especially as I get to know and care about Hawke. In essence identical caves in complete opposite ends of the map bother me more than identical prefab buildings. That does seem to be the general consensus in the fandom. Identical caves in the same city = cardinal sin. Identical prefabs all over an entire galaxy = beneath notice. But we agree that a mod to add variety would be nice. I wonder if it would even be possible, though.

Kinda off topic here, but if BioWare had done a backstory element for Hawke, similar to DAO, but simplified, since there is only a human Hawke, that could be a mage, rogue or warrior …
Post-dad's death, but living their day-to-day lives in Lothering, a cameo by Sister Leliana in the Chantry, the appearance of darkspawn and the family's eventual decision to flee Lothering …
They start out for the Wilds, cut to Varric being dragged in for interrogation and away we go … but with at least some semblance of a connection to the various family members.
DA2 was on a very fast track, so probably never a possibility … but it would have been cool.

This mod basically replaces the Helpful Refugee NPC by the Lothering Tavern into the default Hawke from Dragon Age 2.

To get slightly more on topic, I'd love a Dragon Age Origins Legendary Edition, presenting the story as originally envisioned: I love everything about this to me it's the essence of Dragon Age boiled down into one image. I will give all the money.

I used to like DA2 just mildly until I started playing in nightmare difficulty, because only then the actual depth of the combat system begun showing up. You really have to mind your positioning, at least until you really get the hang of tanking; and eveline is an amazing tank if you know what you are doing. In my last PT with a blood mage Hawk I was really killing it... I always try to encourage people to give it a try, but with proper difficultly (not necessarily nightmare), because in lower difficulties everything works and than combat will lack depth, because you wont need to dive in...

More difficult to rationalize in fantasy. Most of these places are populated by humans. Humans are the new kids on the block. They're just beginning to stretch their legs. Just look at 1950s America. A ton of houses were near-identical prefabs and that was just in local neighborhoods. In fact, that still goes on. Now take that to secret hideouts. They're not really looking to innovate. They just want a place to hide and count their money. I'd imagine that, in general, they buy nicer places elsewhere.

Regarding mass effect, that is the actual topic anyway, I found it funny how a simple idea can totally change a game segment. I'm talking of the Thorian Lair, which is one of the "hardest" main missions. I put hardest in quotation marks because it is only challenging in insanity difficulty (in lower ones it's actually underwhelming) and even then, you can use some clever tactics to overcome the heavy close range attacks of the creepers. I used to get shredder ammo to kill biological enemies faster, use biotic powers from my companions for crowd control, retreat in the lair to bait smaller groups into killzone, and as a last resort, melee strikes to interrupt the acid spits. Yesterday, something so obvious occurred to me, that I don't know why I never thought of it before. I simply equipped all my party with shotguns with sledgehammer ammo. That way, all shots had heavy stopping power, my two companions had the carnage skill, to control enemies that get too close, and my adept Sheppard had great crowd control tools with stasis, push, lift and singularity. BUT, again, I actually barely needed anything but the shotguns (stasis only for the asari clone); because practically every shot would knock the creepers down, and as the acid spots were permanently interrupted, the creepers never managed to be a threat without that power... Impressive to see how much something this small could change a fight from moderately threatening to an absolute joke... And kinda funny that I thought of it exactly when I wasn't playing as a soldier! .
