We are a couple weeks away from the Legendary edition coming out and I just wanted to hear everyone's SPICY takes. I'll start. Tailromancers should be ashamed.
Not only is she an overrated character I never understood the fixation with wanting to romance her. Shepard is in his late 30s when he meets her. Is she even 18? Talk about your barely legal shit. It always came off as some creepy sexual predator shit to me. And this is coming from the sexual degenerate nat in the hat. Jacob may be a horribly written character but he is one of the best early game squadmates. In mass effect 2 if you load in a level 60 shepard you can max out jacob's squad incendiary ammo very early. This will help you immensely especially when getting Garrus and closing the shutters vs the vorcha and krogan bloodpack. Plus his pull recharges quickly and can help with crowd control. After you do his loyalty mission he falls off a bit because he will automatically start using his barrier power when you are counting on his pull power. Mass Effect 3 only redeeming quality is multiplayer. I hate when people say mass effect 3 was great until the ending. Did we play the same game? The story is utter garbage from the very start, in fact the writing in the series went downhill in the second game(more on that later). I am convinced that the multiplayer saved this franchise. Do you remember the shit show when that game dropped in March 2012? The only thing that kept it alive was us bros playing multiplayer. Thats right we saved the series, youre welcome for Andromeda by the way!
The writing in the series took a nosedive in Mass Effect 2.
The story to Mass Effect 2 is horrible. Who wrote this shit? It is the very definition of all style no substance. It makes about as much sense as ass leading the tits vs ass thread, almost nothing makes sense when you stop and think about what you are doing. Its sad when I miss the days of Saren storming the capital trying to overthrow a legitimate(lulz) election.... Just like Tali Garrus is a tad overrated. I like Garrus but Jesus H Christ some of you act like hes the rack hanging off of Denise Milani. Sure he is my bro too but goddamn the calibration joke was old 10 years ago. I always thought Wrex was better than Garrus. Oh and BTW I think some of the blame for what a dog shit show the second games story was, was the fans demanding Tali and Garrus both be in the game. It makes the universe feel so small when the first couple of missions you bump into those two. I barely have enough time to stare at Miranda's tits before Tali is out there talking to shep. The elevator rides werent that fucking bad. This one, holy shit monkeys this take. You know some of the best moments with Wrex is him in the elevator, and I thought it was a clever mechanic at the time to hide loading times, but yall complained so much they took them out, yeah I really think the generic loading screen with a useless tip is SO MUCH BETTER. Way to knock that out of the park fellas.
Ashley isnt a racist. The bitch actually makes some good points about how the council race's will always look out for themselves before anything else. I still leave her to die cuz I mean ya gotta hit that alien tail.

In ME3 he had to show the ME3 squadmates how to provide cover fire. He also has the gravity is one mean mother power. Since the remaster has been announced, a few people won't buy it because no multiplayer. I would be curious how many others think the same. Would that have any effect on sales? Time will tell. Nothing special about Vakarian. I would still have him as a squadmate because of his background. And yes, there is Shepard without Vakarian Too bad my Shepard couldn't listen to some Ozzy, Led Zep, Iron Maiden and few others while in the elevator. I agree. She and my Shepard are good friends. In ME3, when taken on a mission, Williams kicks a**

Mass effect 2 and even more 3 turned Wrex from a wise but bitter Krogan in to basic dumb comic relief whose motivations made no sense in ME3. Leaving him to die on Virmire is the best choice for the game, and for wrex.

Isn't Tali 22 or something & shep about 29 and she isn't even romanced in ME1. She's the one several years later making the overt moves. Then i find this whole current fad for looking askance at any sort of age difference between people absolutely batshit crazy.
Definitely don't agree regarding ME2 writing, it's the definite high point of the trilogy though i wish they hadn't gone for the whole baby terminator imagery.

Despite what Legion tries to sell Shepard in ME3, the Geth are murderbot isolationists. And uploading Reaper code to all Geth....you can't convince me Legion hasn't been indoctrinated/reprogramed. He does a 180 on the Geth's self determination, lies at least twice to Shepard, and shows Shepard none of what the Geth did to force the Quarians from their homeworld and colonies. Billions of Quarians dead with roughly a million "allowed" to flee, and then for the next 300 years killing anyone that enters former Quarian space. Let the Quarian fleet blast them, war assets be damned. Yea Legion you were just protecting the homeworld for the quarians to return one day. Don't mind what is in the books and codex entries about Geth killing quarians that tried to start peace talks as part of their pilgrimage.
I still gut punch the admiral for firing on the Geth ship with Shepard and squad on board. If I could actually RP that moment I would charge him with attempted murder of two Council Spectres, and dispense "Spectre's Justice". Then put Tali in charge of the heavy fleet.

Shepard isn't that well done as a protagonist. They aren't well written bordering almost on full caricaature and they don't provide a wide variety of RP options. Their promotion to Spectre makes little sense given the available lore that was just established mere hours ago. The only reason they are probably popular owes to head canon and the fact they are such a power fantasy.

Mass Effect 2 is the worst-structured of the trilogy, riddled with too many obvious contrivances from start to finish.
Shepard’s thick a brick, and the bulk of this character’s appeal lies in the player’s capacity to tell off, punch or shoot most that disagree with them seemingly with impunity, along with being surrounded by mostly obsequious NPC’s that will just go along with whatever you say, all the way to the grave if necessary. Also, ME1 is the only game where Shepard is occasionally allowed to act smart.
Joker is unfit to be the Normandy’s pilot, and should be permanently grounded. It’s only by sheer luck that Mr. Glass isn’t spontaneously rendered incapacitated.
The geth are 100% responsible for the actions of the heretics. They could have offered peace under certain terms, but chose to let the heretics run wild and impale people on spikes and kill anyone who entered the Veil. For all this talk of self-determination, they sure made it easy to bolster the stigma of their kind when the only active units anyone encounters outside of Legion are basically murder minions that lay traps in the Terminus and kill colonists.
Mordin/Padok Wiks is a traitor to their people in giving the krogan clan leader information about the genophage cure.
Kasumi is obscenely overrated.
Every romance is poorly written in how they’re all initiated, some even cringe inducing, like Liara’s in ME1.

Ok, let's tackle the OP's points first:
Tailromancers should be ashamed.
Nah, we can only romance her 2 years after she finished her pilgrimage. If the quarians send her out into space on her own to do whatever she wants (and with an obligation to get some sort of gift in order to come back in good standing to boot), I think she is of legal age as considered by her species own customs. Everything else is anthropomorphism. I mean, would you have an issue dating a 15 year old salarian? I thought not.
Jacob may be a horribly written character but he is one of the best early game squadmates.
Don't know don't care. Guy is a dick, plain and simple. And let's face it, even on insanity, ME's combat is not difficult enough to really care about the effectiveness of your squad mates that much.
Mass Effect 3 only redeeming quality is multiplayer.
Nah, ME3 has its moments. I do agree though that the bad writing in ME3 is not entirely confined to the ending. I think the entire prologue including Mars is not the great. Kai Leng and the child dreams are atrocious. The whole crucible thing is just not thought out at all. But that is contrasted by some really cool bits in the middle. The Tuchanka and Rannoch arcs are great (though not flawless). And there is fantastic character writing in there (which seems to be about the only thing Mac Walters is really good at).
The writing in the series took a nosedive in Mass Effect 2.
Absolutely agreed on this point. In fact, I would go so far as to say that many of the problems with ME3's writing (everything to do with the crucible especially) are that way because ME2 screwed the writing pooch so spectacularly. Again, it works most of the time on it's own but as part of the trilogy, the writing just sucks.
Just like Tali Garrus is a tad overrated. Nah, Garrus is the best bruh.
The elevator rides werent that fucking bad.
Never bothered me much either but then, I only play on PC, I hear they were even longer on XBox. Still, it'll be good if the speed is adjusted in MELE.
Ashley isnt a racist.
Tend to agree. Most of what she actually says in dialogue is more politically than racially charged and makes sense besides. The only weird comment is the one about aliens and animals in the presidium in ME1 but that was one throwaway ambient dialogue line and IMO it shouldn't define here character.
Now for some of my own: Ashley is the best choice for the Virmire sacrifice.
Now before you come at me with your torches and pitchforks, hear me out here. I usually sacrifice Ash on Virmire, not because I like Kaidan more (in fact, I don't have a particular preference between the two) but because IMO it just fits her personal story arc so much better. She is upset about her family history on the one hand and about loosing her team on Eden Prime on the other. She makes it clear over and over again how determined she is not to flinch in the face of danger and that she will do whatever it takes for the mission. She will not surrender as her grandfather was made to do and she doesn't want anyone else's sacrifice on her conscience.
If you leave her to guard the bomb and then rescue Kaidan, that final cutscene, where you see her shooting geth while watching the Normandy fly off to safety can be really moving. In her eyes, it is redemption and catharsis and she set in stone a monument for her entire family. From Kaidan on the other hand I get none of these doom and gloom vibes. He seems so much more settled in life and eager to go on. He really wants to see how things turn out so I tend to give him that chance.
Jacob's romance resolution is fantastic.
So ok, this might be a bit easy for me to say because I never really liked the guy in the first place but I think the fact that BioWare put a romance into the game where your partner is actually not faithful and breaks up with you was a gutsy move and a pretty good one. I'd like to see more romances go in unexpected territory like this. I mean, for 20 years now, all of them usually follow the same pattern, The player character gets to talk, expresses interest and the potential LI either makes it clear to the player outright that this will not happen or we fall into the pattern of a few dialogues, maybe a quest or two and then a happy relationship for as long as the player wants it that way. Of course, this ensure maximum satisfaction for the player but it's also not really interesting and diminishes the NPC's character. It was pretty cool to see Jacob make his own decisions there, even if that may have disappointed an LI Shepard 9and I am sure a lot of players who went that route). I hope we'll see more stuff like this in the future. Keep it interesting.
Alright, those are the only really contrarian ones that I can think of right now. May add more if some come to mind.

That is certainly a possibility and I also suppose my Shepard was being a bit of a hypocrite there since I think, at least initially I might change this...no wait that is right never mind... she begged the Quarians not to go to war and they still kept on sticking their hands in that particular meat grinder over and over and over again and its like enough already. The Geth's only real mistake was being too tolerant of divergent voices within their society if I am remembering who is posting what correctly.

Shepard should have been female only and written as such. I've never played as male Shepard. The voice acting was so much better on female Shepard that whenever I try a male Shepard playthrough it just feels very lifeless. But that's because at the time Hale was so much more experienced in voice acting than Meer and imo it really, really showed.

Now for some of my own:
Ashley is the best choice for the Virmire sacrifice.
I disagree. I think Ashley surviving fits the things you think her dying does a lot better. For starters, her after the mission going it should have been her fits more precisely because of that attitude, so Shepard talking her out of that mindset is a lot more powerful, and seeing that she doesn't help anyone if she dies and how far is she willing to torture herself for the dead helps shape her moving forward. Meanwhile Kaidan has none of that. Further, her surviving in future games helps restore and redeem her family's honor, going from being blacklisted to an icon via the second Human Spectre, where her dying doesn't really do anything. Meanwhile Kaidan doesn't really achieve anything when he lives than any other biotic couldn't, while him dying helps other human biotics through the money places like Grisson receive and the positive attention about biotics thus fulfilling the things he wished to help.

The alliance are a bunch of bitches. Cerberus is the only group that has human interest in mind. The only thing holding Cerberus back was the Illusive man being indoctrinated. The man was a genius.

Working with Cerberus is better than being with the Alliance Kai Leng would have been the best character in the trilogy if he killed t'soni instead of giving her plane ticket to fly on Kai Leng Airlines Without Mr. Rupert Garner's gumble, Shepard would never have been able to stop the collectors ME3 would have been better is there were a lot more interrupts Oleg Petrovsky would have done a better job playing the role of Anderson ME2 should have been the first game instead of ME1 being the first There should have been an option for Javik to throw the platform out the airlock Had the cipher played a bigger role in ME3, t'soni would never have been needed Hackett's ending would have received a lot less negative feedback than what the current endings received Shepard should have been able to have a cigarette and drink with her/him when talking with TIM in ME2 Cerberus is the reason why the galaxy had a chance to destroy the reapers Conrad Verner should have been a romance option for femshep Gianni Parasini should have been a romance option for maleshep Arrival is the best dlc in the trilogy I would have preferred having a crucible dlc instead of having the Citadel dlc

The alliance are a bunch of bitches. Cerberus is the only group that has human interest in mind. The only thing holding Cerberus back was the Illusive man being indoctrinated. The man was a genius. That was one of my big head canon desires/ 'if I was writing Mass Effect 3' to actually have a plot where he is de indoctrinated and ends up working with you again in the end. The greatest travesty is we lost access to that man's mind. On another note some posts have been complaining about Shepard's intelligence and that is one criticism I will...criticize. Shepard was actually quite intelligent for the role they really had and then certainly came off looking a lot better then all the galactic leadership.
