I mean it's absolute bollocks if Varric dies and the the protagonist of DA4 is supposed to be dealing with this arguably very sad and emotional (yet expected) moment, when Hawke, and even Inquisitor are the ones who this should be affecting. And new players who are the majority won´t care if Varric dies. Another cliche mentor death.

I don't want Varric to die, simple as that. He was best friend to two of my characters and is my favourite in the whole series,so I just hope, he can retire in peace and drink some wine I. Kirkwall with my Hawke and her girlfriend Isabela.
But yeah, they probably kill him off and I hate it.

Thank god not a companion (well atleast not a full one). But i fear that Bioware will kill Varric off at the beginning or so for some drama. I can't like either of these posts hard enough. I agree with both of you - I'm glad he's not back as a companion (and to be fair, I felt he didn't need to return in Inquisition, but in hindsight, I'm glad he did...). But they will absolutely kill him off just for the cheap shock and to help "give stakes" to the plot. He deserves to retire in Kirkwall, running the Hanged Man and even Kirkwall, where my Hawke and Merrill can reside and live in peace.

So yeah Varric will die in tutorial. Thank Bioware. I still think that this is a stupid decision.
And Solas this bastard have destroyed Bianca (not the real one)

So spitballing here with some thoughts on physical cameos. If I missed or said anything incorrect please point it out.
Also, I'm taking into account different worldstates. Like how in DA II Zevran can show up for that one minor side mission if alive, but if he is dead then you get no cameo. I am also assuming we are staying in the northern part of the map (not going further south then Nevarra).
In the game:
Solas and Varric
Will most likely show (75%+ chance):
Inquisitor – They have unfinished business.
Dorian – He always ends up as a member of the Magisterium and would be a contact Varric knows for when we are in Tevinter. I'd be shocked if he doesn't show more so then any other companion.
Josephine - She always goes back to Antiva and helps rebuild her family's trading fleet. We are going to Antiva in the game and she would be a contact of Varric.
Morrigan – Magic shenanigans going on, who her mother is, how she might have drank from the well, how popular she is, she could be anywhere for all we know.
Zevran – Assuming he is alive I could see him making a cameo since we have a crow as a companion and one of the places we are going to in game is Antiva.
Blackwall – If made a Warden he goes to Weisshaupt fortress to pledge himself to the Grey Wardens for good and stays. Also, would be a contact of Varric.
Could show (50-75% chance):
Bethany/Carver – Varric states in Inqusition that they were last seen on warden business near the border of the Anderfels if they were made a Warden. So they could be in Weisshaupt.
Fenris – Could show up if he made his way back up to Tevinter to mess with Magisters, and could also be a contact of Varric.
Isabela – She is a pirate captain based on Estwatch, so she could show up in Rivain or Antiva as a contact of Varric. Could also be in Weisshaupt if Hawke is still there, since Varric says she will show up regardless of if Hawke wants her to.
Will probably not show (20-49% chance):
Alistar– Could show up in the Anderfels if he is alive and a warden since last we saw he was traveling up there Weisshaupt but that was also a decade ago. It is possible he stayed there.
Logain – Same reasoning as Alistar, but lower odds given his age.
Leliana – Assuming she is not Divine she could make a cameo since she is always in the post-Trepasser cutscene regardless of the fate of the Inquisition.
Cassandra – Assuming she is not Divine she might make a cameo since she is always in the post-Trepasser cutscene regardless of the fate of the Inquisition. She might be busy with the Seekers though and she seems less likely to head up North then Leliana would be to me.
Sten – Could show up given his role in the Qunari as Arishok. Depends on what their role is in the story to be honest for a big wig to show up.
Will most likely not show (1-20% chance):
Iron Bull – Could show if alive, but seems like his mercenary work keeps him in the southern parts of the map where there is less Qunari/Tevinter who might want to get revenge on him. Plus, he has little reason to unless he got with Dorian and their relationship is kept on the down low.
Cole – Could make a cameo as a spirit given the stuff with the Fade or as a wandering traveler, but I doubt it.
Anders – I guess he could show if alive, he fled north, and the fade does something with his connection to Justice, but I doubt it.
Merrill – Busy with city elfs and/or her clan in Kirkwall. Varric says the same Weisshaupt comment about her as Isabela so it is barely something.
Oghren – Can't think of a reason why he'd show, unless he somehow wandered up to Weisshaupt and stayed there in the last decade plus.
Shale – Can't think of a reason why she'd show up, but you never know I guess.
Hawke – If he/she is alive the epilogue states that Hawke and Varric later rebuild Kirkwall's damaged infrastructure together. I'd assume Hawke probably just want to retire at this point.
Sera – Busy with Red Jenny stuff, and I can't really see her traveling north.
The Warden - Anything is possible, but I can't see it after all this time.
No chance at showing (0%):
Cullen – Either retired, begging in the streets, or helping former Templars.
Aveline – Presumably busy being guard captain of Kirkwall still.
Sebastian – Busy being Prince of Starkhaven.
Vivienne – Busy being Divine or Grand Enchanter.
Dog – Probably not alive still.
Wynne – Not alive.

Inquisitor – They have unfinished business. I would put the Inquisitior at 99,9%. We are able to recreate him / her so yeah say that he / she showing up for real. Over one year ago Claudia Black had said she isn´t in Veilguard maybe this has changed but maybe not. Is for me a "Will most likely not show (1-20% chance)" because of his different fates No chance at showing (0%) for every game after DA 2. Too much work also they don´t have one face and fate. If Bioware really want bring someone back from Hawkes family it would be Charade Amell because one face, one fate and therefore always lives in all possible world states. Too much work for two characters who can die so many times. Maybe there is a small change for King Alistair but Warden (also drunk) Alistair and Loghain wouldn´t be worth for the small amount of players who will see them as small cameos. Leliana, Cassandra and Vivienne i don´t want to return regardless who is Divine or not. If Bioware brings back Leliana as Divine Victoria they have to create the same scene with Cassandra and Vivienne. Not worth it. Trespasser was more enough. I don´t think that Bioware want to recast the Iron Bull and besides Dorian he doesn´t make much sense to return. It´s No change at showing (0%) for me. No mention of recreating them unlike the Inquisitor so It´s No change at showing (0%). Well turning her back into a dwarf would make a cool quest in Tevinter section of the game. I think he has a better chance than you may think. 50% if we really visiting Starkhaven. I am sadly disappointed that you haven´t listed Awakening Companions besides Oghren and Anders / Justice. No love for Nathaniel? Edit: Also the DAO DLC companions would be very happy if they get some love and atleast get ranked. And Tallis? I know many people don´t like her but she would fit great in Veilguard and is possible in all world states.
Edit: And those are just the previous companions. There are many possible returning NPCs out there.

I actually just clicked back to update the list because I just read the part about the Inquisitor. I don't bother with the Awakening/DLC companions because the odds of them being back are just automatically much worse because math wise because a lot less people will have played any of the DLCs. If we're debating if certain main companions might show up, then I can't imagine any DLC characters do to be honest.

If we're debating if certain main companions might show up, then I can't imagine any DLC characters do to be honest. I disagree because it doesn´t matter for Bioware if the player knows the DLC character or not. It´s more about does he / she always exists and therefore is very easy to include. They still can be re-introducted / explained for new players or even not because like i said it maybe even doesn´t matter. So yeah i definitely won´t rule out Tallis and yes even Sketch. And for a small quest yeah i can see Finn & Ariane make a return.

Of course he will. And we will be forced to be devastated by his loss. I mean isn´t this terrible and lazy writing if such major story moment is so obvious? Honestly, it feels like such an obvious move that it makes me hope it's all a red herring and Varric can be allowed to finally go retire after all this. The scariness of him trying to talk Solas down in the gameplay trailer, the loss of his crossbow (hopefully a stand-in sacrifice for him), the team apparently teasing that some people may be lost along the way. I definitely feel unsettled. He's been one of my favorites and I was among the folks who wished we could have romanced him way back in DA 2. LOL Imagine if the actual death ends up being the Inquisitor after everyone goes to the trouble of recreating them in the CC. The amount of Internet couches burning...

Y'know, that is one thing I considered when I saw that reveal - when Bianca got destroyed, that was my thought, too. This is how they force him to not be involved anymore - he has no way to directly fight back. So, he has to instead play an advisory role (which, I'd rather him go retire back in Kirkwall, but so long as he's not dead, fine).
I have to think at some point, BioWare has to realize that he's probably one of the most loved characters of this franchise, along with Alistair, Morrigan, and (for whatever reason) Isabella. I actually thought the same thing about the Inquisitor, too. The moment it was said they would be in the prologue, I thought, "...That's weird...I wonder if it's they who will die instead?" So yeah...I think Varric will actually live, and the Inquisitor will die. To be fair, I'm fine with that; I was never attached to the Inquisitor for whatever reason, so I'm fine if they die instead.

Where did they say the Inquisitor is in the prologue?

My main/first/canon Inquisitor was a Solasmancer so her thoughts on death and/or self-sacrifice could be very well wrapped up in how everything goes down with the troubled egg in the end. So I’m already mentally prepared for a wide range of fuckery of largely the sad/tragic kind because ain’t nobody believing for a single solitary minute that those two are gonna go ride off into the sunset together during closing credits. LOL

Where did they say the Inquisitor is in the prologue? Has not been said. The only confirmed thing is there will be a CC for us to recreate our Inquisitor and select some DAI choices that will affect how Veilguard begins. Which is leading some to conjecture that Varric was a default/fill-in for the Inquisitor in that gameplay trailer. But it’s just conjecture.

The choices affecting the beginning I feel are going to be more reflecting on the Inquisition's status as well as its mission plan for dealing with Solas. We saw the teaser that had Varric describing Solas as being from the game, so there might be more than helps players catch up.

As I said, they're just thoughts - I have no evidence to base any of this on, but it's just a gut feeling I have. I never said it was a guarantee, but if they're letting us recreate the Inquisitor, it means they'd be shown shortly after. It's like when we recreated Hawke shortly before meeting them in Inquisition.
All will be revealed in time. Until then, all we can do is speculate.

We saw the teaser that had Varric describing Solas as being from the game, so there might be more than helps players catch up. Yeah, I agree. Maybe the Inky Trespasser decision of wanting to stop or redeem Solas influences how Varric approaches the beginning - such as trying to talk him down, as we saw, and he gets disarmed - or he goes in Bianca-blazing and gets disarmed, leading to the exact same place either way m, so to speak. Or maybe doesn’t affect that at all. Personally, I feel like Inky will show up later. Probably in some capacity to determine Solas’s fate. And between decisions inputted at start-up about that, input from Rook and gang on Veilguard happenings, and maybe a final deciding moment based on past and current events, Inky carries out that fate. So those who want to end him or redeem him get that decision to perform equally.

Regardless if Varric is dying in the tutorial or not but i know i..know shouldn´t the real Bianca not making a an appearance? Maybe for fixing the crossbow or mourning Varric? Perhabs Bianca is the reason if Varric somehow survives why he won´t join the Veilguard party and stays at the Lighthouse? Yes most players are hating the real Bianca but lets face both Varric and Bianca are loving eachother.

The scariness of him trying to talk Solas down in the gameplay trailer, the loss of his crossbow (hopefully a stand-in sacrifice for him), the team apparently teasing that some people may be lost along the way. I think it would have to be far enough along that new players might have developed some sort of attachment for him. However, what I think will happen is that the loss of Bianca is what will sideline him, thus explaining why he doesn't continue with us after opening sequence. Unless, of course, it is not Solas who kills him but the one of the other two gods. He was left rather too close for comfort. May be they will be focused on Solas so Varric can make his escape.

They wouldn't be pushing him in promo materials if they didn't want newcomers to recognize and connect with him. It's also his voice that they hear in narration recounting what happened before.
