I suspect they are. I got too many DCs where I rolled a 1 (critical failure) the first time and a 20 (critical success) after using inspiration to retry for it to be totally random. Also, my character gets hit less than the other party members with the same AC. I swear that the dice hate Gale. He keeps rolling natural 1s in a row and failing even 95% cantrips. The guy is useless for me overall. I keep his big hitters for "real fights", but my Monk, Lae'zel and Karlach are stomping through everything, even without Shadowheart's support. And in the rare cases where things get a tad dicey, Gale misses his shots... Fun fact - I just noticed he never got Magic Missile. We are level 8. I either buy scrolls or give him everything we find as loot, so I assumed one of those was MM. Apparently not. I am surprised that Astarion is actually a very dangerous SoB. His stealth and Sneak attacks are brutal. And he dodges like everything. Maybe I am just too melee oriented and it skews my perception. Weird, my Gale started with Magic Missiles and I abused the hell out of that for the time he was in my party. I'm even feeling the lost right now. Using Shadowheart as support? Haven't you seen the amazing power of Spirit Guardians? She's a mowing chainsaw in my party (and respeccing her to War Cleric made her even more dangerous). Astarion was always a dangerous SoB. Learn to set him up for sneak attacks and enjoy the benefits... And while some people are trying to set their entire party into heavy armor, the way 5e armor works is that light and medium aren't worst than heavy. They just have different requirements. Light requires going full dex while medium requires 14 dex to maximize, both top 1 AC under heavy armor if you manage to find full plate (compared as non-magical). And magic isn't left behind, Mage Armor (no concentration last until long rest) set your base armor to 13 (the equivalent of stubbed leather +1) instead of 10 which means Dex bonuses are applied after and it stack with bracers of armor. I actually wanted to test if it worked with Barbarian unarmored defense CON bonus or only Dex, but I forgot last night. EDIT: I just went and tested it and mage armor doesn't stack with the CON bonus (unarmored defense). Dragon Sorcerer already have their base armor set to 13 so they get no benefits from Mage Armor thought.

It's been 12 of more years since I felt this way playing a video game, speaks volumes about the current gaming landscape.
i'm playing on tactician, i have the karmic dice option activated, but my god, had to savescum like 50 times.
Enjoying the Bard class and the subclass of swords quite a lot to be honest. can't wait for more, i've been stuck on the shadowlands for 3 days now.

Do you have the game on a SSD? There is a slow HDD option in the game menu which might be the cause for your slow texture loading, but it requires more memory (the option tooltip explains it). I don't think I have an SSD. I tried the slow HDD setting but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference.

EDIT: I just went and tested it and mage armor doesn't stack with the CON bonus (unarmored defense). Dragon Sorcerer already have their base armor set to 13 so they get no benefits from Mage Armor thought. My party is stacked on melee users with Monk, Lae'zel and Karlach. So Shadowheart was first our healer. But then I realized healing sucks, so she has been our buff support and bow specialist. I don't respec any characters on first run, so she is stuck in her starting build. While she has some great spells (I quickly figured Spirit Guardians), on paper Gale is more powerful. But he can't hit shit in my party. Hell, his Cat familiar is more useful than Gale.
I have been using a lot of the Shadow Monk utility, especially the +10 buff to party stealth. And the Illusion cantrip to make enemies turn their vision in the proper direction. This way I can clear half the enemies before we even get into turn based combat. Astarion shines in that. And Gale's cat. The kitty can lure or turn enemies away from the group while we backstab them. The Creche didn't know what hit em. Most of them didn't even see it.
So yeah, not much use of Shadowheart in these scenarios. But I am planning on a Cleric run where she and my character can go on a full Cleric battle frenzy. And romance each other of course.
I kinda figured how Heavy Armor is not so good. At least not yet. The Dexterity bonus felt too good. I actually have Karlach really high on both Str (22) and Dex (18), mostly due to some nice item bonuses. She hits a lot and throws stuff everywhere. I gave her the Wolf path, but maybe I should have chosen a Bear to keep her tankier.

I know most spec Gale as an Evoker, but if you spec him as a Diviner, he gets a great ability called Portent.
With high rolls, you can turn misses into hits, failed saves into successes... With low rolls, you do the opposite to your enemies.
As you might imagine, it can be really, really helpful in Boss battles.

I don't even understand why this game has it's own launcher. It's really annoying. From one of Hrungr's posts in the other thread: 1. Right-click the game in your library and select Properties. 2. Look for the Launch Options field at the bottom of the General tab. 3. Add "--skip-launcher" and close the properties window. 4. Launch the game as normal. This launches it in DX11 mode as well as bypassing the Larian launcher Hmm...I was told that option defaulted to Vulkan. My procedure's always been to just link the executable directly from a desktop shortcut, since I don't actually use Steam (or whatever) for anything. BG3 has two executables, one Vulkan and the other DX11.

BG3 is now at 96/95 on metacritics/opencritics sites. It might actually go higher since there is only 9 reviews scored so far...

Hmm...I was told that option defaulted to Vulkan. No I checked it's the DX11 version. As I prefer Vulkan I reverted to the following Launch Option "D:\Games\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin\bg3.exe" %command% Your path may vary

They can really sway the outcomes of both combat and non-combat encounters if played correctly. It's kind of a bummer that we're capped at 12th level. In my opinion, Evokers don't really come into their own until they get Overchannel at 14th. Max damage on a 5th level Magic Missile is delightful.

One major downside of ditching the launcher on GOG is it seems to disable the overlay so I cannot take screenshots. This blows... So I went the launcher route again to take a screenshot after bumping my resolution to 4K on my 2K monitor with DSR to compare (can't tell the difference, lol) and a few minutes in idle into that the game crashed again. I wonder if it's the stupid launcher. I had the game running for an hour without the launcher and no issues. Hmmm. Btw some textures seem really low quality. Faces and armor look great for the most part but some stuff looks really bad even on ultra everything. Funny enough the mindflayer face was a really blurry low res mess for example. Is this some kind of bug or is some stuff simply low res to save vRAM? It doesn't look glitched/not loaded properly, just like textures are on low on some stuff. No big deal obviously, just wondering. Edit: Nope, it's not the launcher. Crashed during a cutscene just now, second time it crashed in camp, first time trying to talk to a companion. I'll try to install older drivers. Gotta be the drivers...

I don't think so, but it's a completely different levelling system, so there's no real comparison there. I suspect there's just as much content for one playthrough, but much more possibility of doing different things over multiple playthroughs.
From the DnD 5e experts I've talked to from 14th level onwards you start to get abilities that can really break a game which doesn't have a DM that can roll with it.So keeping it to 12th is probably wise.

I got the GOG overlay disabled and I'm taking screenshots via Windows Key + F12 and then I copy past into paint to save the clipboard with the screenshot. About the texture, I had issue with hair (a lots of them were too shiny/colors were not right) and from what I read from EA comments it was a low graphical thing, but I was on high/ultra (what the game set by default). So I set all the graphical options to to low, loaded a save and then went back into the options and set everything to high/ultra and they were not as shiny anymore and better color. Also, I'm on borderless window mode, not sure if that change anything.

Downloaded an older driver somebody claims fixed it for them and the Larian launcher is ironically warning me it's outdated and I should upgrade to the latest ones. *g* I'll give it a try anyway.Got nothing to lose. I think I'll just endure the launcher so I can take screenshots the easy way. It just saves half a minute. Not worth losing the screenshot button over. I've never had crashing issues like here ever on my old system in 8 years.

So keeping it to 12th is probably wise. Larian concurs. Sounds like Vincke's thinking that higher levels would require a whole new game's worth of development, if it's doable at all. Bio didn't do too badly with the problem in their two whacks at it. HotU did kind of fall apart if you did a Dev Crit build, but that was unavoidable.

AMD users can use the Adrenalin overlay. Isn't there an Nvidia equivalent? Shadowplay - but for some absurd reason it has randomly started changing the file type it captures screenshots as from .png to .jxr....and then you have to manually convert it to be able to upload to a filing sharing site.

You know what I like about this game so far? The fact that certain cut-scenes can happen at different times, or not even at all. Which at least imo. makes for a lot of re-playability Like, I restarted my game a few times in the past few days, and got several different cut-scenes each time. A few same ones, like the ones related to certain story aspects, but I also got quite a few new ones.

One major downside of ditching the launcher on GOG is it seems to disable the overlay so I cannot take screenshots. I disabled my gog overlay ages ago cause it was crashing DAO, I take screen shots by pressing the windows key+screenshot key which captures whatever's on my screen and automatically saves it to a screen shots folder in Pictures.

I actually switched from borderless to full screen because that seems to fix the crashing for some people. Can you not install and use FRAPS or install MSI Afterburner to monitor your PC and use it's screenshot functionality? Nvidia has it's own Screenshot functionality I think it's ALT +F2.

Currently, my second favourite game - behind BG3, of course - is blocking Youtube channels that put BG3 spoilers in their titles and/or thumbnails. Fucking jerks. Oh I hate that too which is why I blocked youtube from my browser. I already like an idiot had spoiled for myself a certain part of Shadowhearts story by looking at her character sheet.
